Start Menu 8 is a free Window 8 Start Menu | PCWorld | Win 8 | Scoop.it
Third-party replacement of the missing Windows 8 Start menu (I'm sorry, the Modern/Metro UI is not a start menu) has become quite the booming cottage industry. Stardock's Start8, a $5 alternative, has been the most seamless replacement for several months, but it's now going to have to share that honor with Iobit's Start Menu 8. And, unfortunately for Stardock, Start Menu 8 is free.

How to Create a Windows 8 Installation DVD or USB Drive

How to Create a Windows 8 Installation DVD or USB Drive | Win 8 | Scoop.it
Microsoft has made upgrading to Windows 8 really easy with their upgrade tool, but if you have special needs and need a more traditional installation disc, you might not know where to look. Here's how to create one.
David Anders's insight:
Download the Windows 8 Installer from Microsoft's web site and run it on an existing Windows system. It doesn't actually have to be the PC you want to upgrade, even though it says so—heck, it can be a PC you've already upgraded to Windows 8.If it prompts you for a license, enter the key you received when you originally bought Windows 8.Once you've gotten past the licensing screen, it'll ask you how you want to install Windows 8. Choose "Install by Creating Media."It'll now give you a choice between a flash drive or an ISO file. If you want to create a thumb drive, choose "USB Flash Drive"—if you want to create a DVD, choose "ISO File."If you chose the ISO file, you can now burn it to a DVD with something like ImgBurn.Note that if you create the installation media on a 32-bit PC, you'll get a 32-bit ISO, and if you create it on a 64-bit PC you'll get a 64-bit ISO (so make sure you create it on the right kind of PC).

Soluto: the best PC to run Windows is the MacBook Pro | Electronista

Soluto: the best PC to run Windows is the MacBook Pro | Electronista | Win 8 | Scoop.it
A new study by a cloud-based PC admin software maker, Soluto, concludes that bloatware included on most Windows PC notebooks by the manufacturers is harming the Windows experience to such an extent that the best portable on which to run Windows is...
David Anders's insight:

While the mid-2012 13-inch MacBook Pro took the top prize, the 15-inch Retina model also placed in the top 10, in sixth place. It is worth noting that the $1,200 price of the 13-inch MBP was roughly $700 higher than the second-place entry, the Acer Aspire E1-571, though the latter machine is in an entirely different and lower class of Windows portable than the premium MacBook Pro. Surprisingly, another "flagship" notebook, Lenovo's Thinkpad X1 Carbon (which sells for around the same price as the 13-inch MBP) was dead last on the top 10 list.

The average boot time 151 seconds, a little above average, and twice as long as some models. On background processes, however, the two Macs had the lowest scores of any model. Even more surprising than the inclusion of Apple on a "most reliable PCs" list is the fact that three of the largest PC portable manufacturers -- HP, Asus and Samsung -- didn't even make the list.

How To Boot Into Windows 8 Safe Mode | Redmond Pie

How To Boot Into Windows 8 Safe Mode | Redmond Pie | Win 8 | Scoop.it
Starting Safe Mode on Windows 8 is something you’d always try if facing some issue with normal start up, even if you don’t know much about what you’re doing.

Booting Windows 8 In Safe Mode When PC Is Not Starting

This one is a little tricky, because it takes trial and error (and patience) to launch the Windows 8 ‘recovery mode’ when start up sequence is on going. What you need to do is, past the BIOS splash screen, hold down the Shift key and repeatedly hit the F8 key. Doing so should get you to the recovery mode, but it might take a few tries before you achieve that.

Once the Recovery screen is displayed, click the See advanced repair options button. In the next screen, hit the Troubleshoot button.

How to Use Windows 8? Search for It

How to Use Windows 8? Search for It | Win 8 | Scoop.it
David Pogue is mystified why Windows 8 forces a user to search for nearly everything.

I’m deep, deep into Windows 8. When you write a book about an operating system, you wind up rummaging around in dark corners of it that very few people ever see. You learn its quirks and virtues just as you would a person you live with.

A couple of weeks ago, I celebrated some really great Windows 8 features that nobody talks about. There are plenty of bright spots like that.
