How many? Looking first to numbers – the numbers have grown even if the strategy may not seem all that apparent. The total number of Twitter feeds in the data base is 335 being run by 69 companies making prescription products – removing those that are aimed at supporting over-the-counter products. Obviously there are some pharma company brands that run multiple feeds. Some run over 20. How busy? One of the fields tracked is how often the feed is used and only 201 had “regular” or “daily” updates with another 8 having rare updates. The balance were inactive/dormant accounts. Of the active feeds, the pharmas are following about 190,000 others and being followed by 2.7 million. What for? Overwhelmingly the purpose is a corporate one with 141 of the Twitter feeds serving some direct corporate purpose. There are also a fairly large number that have been devoted to the issue of a disease or condition (39 overall, 23 among the active). A few are even dealing in product-specific work to varying degrees. Where are they? What may surprise some is that 58 percent of the active Twitter feeds were outside of the United States.

Background: Approximately 80% of research evidence relevant to clinical practice never reaches the clinicians delivering patient care. A key barrier for the translation of evidence into practice is the limited time and skills clinicians have to find and appraise emerging evidence. Social media may provide a bridge between health researchers and health service providers.
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of social media as an educational medium to effectively translate emerging research evidence into clinical practice.
Conclusions: Social media may be an effective educational medium for improving knowledge of health professionals, fostering their use of research evidence, and changing their clinical behaviors by translating new research evidence into clinical practice. J Med Internet Res 2015;17(10):e242

Here's a question: Would you decline an opportunity to attend an all-expenses paid education conference that promised sessions and recourses related to your work as an educator? Furthermore, would you decline if the session leaders shared their presentations and resource material? If the answer to these questions is yes, then you have no need to use Twitter. Because Twitter for educators is exactly that- a FREE, global education conference you have the choice to drop in on 'sessions' and gather resources whenever you want. Connecting and sharing resources with other educators and communicating/collaborating in real-time conversations (chats) throughout the globe is exactly how Twitter is used by educators. Evident is a culture of sharing, generosity and gratitude. Whenever "tweet-savvy" educators attend conferences, they share information they are learning in real-time via the conference-issued hashtag. Which means: you can learn along with them from wherever you are (and whenever you want to "tune-in").

The first presidential debate in 2012 took place between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama at the University of Denver. The second debate took place that same day on Twitter between their supporters. The Oct. 3 debate generated a record-setting 10.3 million tweets of jokes, analysis, quotes and observations, according to Twitter. Before the event had even begun, its Twitter chatter dwarfed that of all the 2008 presidential debates combined. After the election, Obama adviser David Axelrod reflected on

This is an interview for Byline, a crowdfunded independent media platform that gives you a personalized newspaper. The platform beta-launched on April 14th. You can read the original interview here. Seung-yoon Lee is co-founder and CEO of Byline. He was the first East Asian President of the Oxford Union, the world's prestigious debating society, and is a contributing editor to The WorldPost.
Three decades ago, Prof. Noam Chomsky, who is seen by some as the most brilliant and courageous intellectual alive and by others as an anti-U.S. conspiracy theorist, penned his powerful critique of the Western corporate media in his seminal book "Manufacturing Consent," with co-author Edward S. Herman. The book had a profound impact on my perception of the mainstream media in my teenage years, and was crucial in some ways to my decision to start Byline with my co-founder Daniel Tudor. By cutting out the advertiser and political bias of the proprietor, we believed that crowdfunding had the potential to democratize the media landscape and support independent journalism.
In "Manufacturing Consent," Noam Chomsky posits that Western corporate media is structurally bound to "manufacture consent" in the interests of dominant, elite groups in society. With "filters" which determine what gets to become "news" -- including media ownership, advertising, and "flak," he shows how propaganda can pervade the "free" media in an ostensibly democratic Western society through self-censorship. However, lot has changed since then. We now have the Internet. The so-called legacy media organizations which have been "manufacturing consent" according to Chomsky are in massive financial trouble. Has any of his analysis changed? I recently interviewed Noam Chomsky at his MIT office, to find out his views on the current media landscape.

It's hard to believe that at one time, hashtags weren’t a part of the Twitter lexicon. Here's how the hashtag originated on the social media site.
Whether you use them for reaching potential customers, interact with people, or to generate content, Social Media is a power tool for businesses. Check out some of the most popular online networks and how much of an impact they each have.
Marty Note Love being able to compare key metrics across social nets.Wish they had stayed with the SAME metric for time on site throughout however. They switch from days to months and that makes Instragam appear as if it has more time on site than Facebook (it doesn't).
