5 Major Social Media Marketing Mistakes And How To Overcome Them

5 Major Social Media Marketing Mistakes And How To Overcome Them | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it
What marketing mistakes are keeping you from achieving your social media marketing goals? Check out these common but major social media marketing mistakes and how exactly you can overcome them.
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Social Media Is Conversation Not Lectures

Social Media is PULL marketing. Pull marketing needs time to establish a relationship. Time to talk and be heard. That's why my favorite social media marketing mistake is #1 -on Forbes list of five common social mistakes - not listening to your audience.

Digital Listening Is Different
Digital listening is different than listening to someone while having a conversation. Digital listening requires social rewards, examples, and a clear ask. Creating a clear ask, defining what you want to happen and why strays into Forbes second mistake - no clear objectives.

Confusion = Don't Buy, Engage, Contribute

Without objective confusion rules. If you don't know why you're doing, saying, or asking something how can the digital receiver possibly know? Confused customers do many things buying is never one of them.

Confusion Is Easy, Clarity Hard
During an almost twenty year career as a digital marketer, I built my first e-commerce website in 1999, clarity is the easiest sin. Think your marketing, motives, and campaigns are clear as a ringing bell on a cold morning in the Himalayas? Think again.

Don't Talk To Yourself About Yourself

All digital marketing is in danger of 1. talking to itself about itself and 2. not listening. Listening isn't easy. Listening is at least twice as hard as talking and digital listening is at least twice as hard as real-life listening or conversational listening where nonverbal clues can help bring you back around can help stop our tendency to talk to ourselves about ourselves.

Favorite Digital Listening Tactics

Here are a few digital listening tactics we recommend:

  • Social Rewards - Features and social media shares of user-generated content is a great way to show you listen.
  • Loyalty Programs - Points, badges, and other social honors work when the rules are clear, the game fair, and rewards meaningful (social reward is more lasting than material).
  • Responses - Responding to blog comments, blogging about great questions and sharing on social media values the comment, review, or question.
  • Profiles - Their content on your site is our favorite "listening" tactic because having users create content encourages shares and reduces your content creation burden/need.

Those are our initial pre-coffee reactions. More at Curagami.com soon.

Instagram: You Can't Treat It LIke Just Another Social Network | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it

You wouldn't bring a snow plow to the hot Sahara desert and, likewise, you shouldn't bring shorts and a beach towel to the icy Arctic tundra. Thus, you shouldn’t use one set of all-encompassing tools for every social media network. They each have their own climates and require different tips and strategies.

5 Storytelling Web Design Tips
Earlier today we shared a Scoop and Curagmai post about how to tell simple e-commerce stories (http://www.curagami.com/simple-ecommerce-stories-how-to/ ). The about page is the easiest and most expected place to tell an important e-com story, but here are 5 tips to design your website for stories:

* Comments - Ask for and use COMMENTS

* Conversations - Turn COMMENTS into conversations by writing blog posts about them, sharing your collaboration on social nets and throughout your marketing

* Gamify - Design for gamification (badges, user profiles, Wikis and Q&A knowledge base)

* ASK - Create an ASK where you ask visitors to join your movement with an Ambassador page (explaining how to join and what is in it for your visitors to join)

* THEM Not YOU - Make sure your web design has AT LEAST as much about THEM (your customers) as you.

Follow those 5 simple web design steps to create community.

Consumers and Social Media New Research : Social Media Examiner and Sprout Research1

Consumers and Social Media New Research : Social Media Examiner and Sprout Research1 | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it

What Do Consumers Think About Social Media?
We found it interesting that "being responsive" on social media was the #1 thing consumers rate as a purchase intent influence. This is why we prefer to curate, coach and reward using social media more than push sales or other one-sided agendas.

Social media is a conversation and the more marketers use it to signal their commitment to listening and being responsive the more social media works. Using social media as digital print ads never work and will never work.

That said, #2 on the list is making offers, so using social media as part of conversational program where part of that conversation is sharing deals, specials, and offers makes sense. There's a link to the Sprout Research that powered this post and both are worth reading.

Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Interesting summary of a Sprout Research report on how consumers view social media. Both are worth reading.

Using smart phones has given small businesses a outlet with that technology just as appealing as the larger businesses. I feel this source is very reliable because it’s currerly where we are in our society. Smart phones are being more and more used and the technology has gone to another level. For our audio industry professionals this is much needed and reliable because cost have to be cut and budgets have to be met.

Influencing Customer Journey As Important As Understanding It  | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it

Customer Journeys
As Mckinsey points out in their excellent The Customer Decision Journey post buying moves from the bottom of a "conversion funnel" to the middle. Thanks to social media and friends-of-friends marketing winning customer advocacy trumps all.

This post ClickZ post discusses the importance of influencing what happens in this brave new world of customers, journeys, and conversion.

Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Social media is shifting the "customer journey" and the conversion funnel thinking. Today what happens after an online sales is arguably more important than what happens before. Win advocacy or die.

Top 5 Most Read Posts 2016 via @Curagami

Top 5 Most Read Posts 2016 via @Curagami | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it

Most Read As Sign of the Times

Funny how what your readers read teaches two things. First your "most read" or viewed posts share what is happening in the world. Curagami's Top 5 Most Read posts in 2016 are about SEO, marketing, hacking and branding.

While the mix of subjects isn't a surprised, Curagami is a digital marketing company, the 80:20 Rule is. Scoop.it remains 2x as important in pure views as our blog. While that fact may distress some it pleases us.

Curation is what is next in content marketing. Soon no one will be able to afford to blog about untested or unknown result subjects. Risks of damage to existing benchmarks is simply too great to blog "at will" anymore.

We've seen predictions in Barabasi's book Linked: How Everything Is Connected To Everything Else come true. Linked is proving correct probably because Barabasi's predictions are based on his observations about how networks form and evolve.

The "Rich Get Richer" concept isn't new. Big brands have been exploiting "rich get richer" for decades. Walmart is built on the idea of a tiny advantage from massive scale is a big advantage and lots of money with Amazon their digital counterpart.

That Scoop.it creates greater reach than our blog is a truth many marketers will need to understand and adjust to. Scoop.it's power speaks to content curation's greater reach, efficiency, and lower costs. It is easier to create community when you listen and content curation is a form of "digital listening".

The rich getting richer is the mathematical destiny of networks. Our jobs, as digital marketers, is not to figure out how to be loved by more customers than Coca Cola but find ways to incorporate our customers better, learn faster, and do what is right, true, and honest for our brands.

Enlist 5 customers today in your movement and ask them to help. When they enlist 5 friends as them to help too and before you know it you aren't the only one reading a post, sharing a Scoop or reading a book. We are smarter together than alone...always.
