From a Social and Solidarity Economy to a Sharing Economy

From a Social and Solidarity Economy to a Sharing Economy | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
The New Alternative Economic Systems (Part One)

The Emergence Of The Sharing Economy

Over the past few years, consumers have naturally developed, in the face of successive recessions, more rational purchasing reflexes. They have become more concerned about the relevance of their purchases and the social benefits they may have. More aware of the inequalities and the consequences of the enormous waste caused by the overconsumption of society, connected consumers are increasingly opting for platforms for the exchange of goods and services between individuals, without seeking to make profits and without intermediaries. And, if they choose commercial offer platforms, it is often in a context of collaborative economics and sharing. A new economic system is taking shape. It relies more on the pooling of goods, places or tools. And it is more geared towards use than acquisition. It is the sharing economy.

Already by 1994 – 1995, the giants of eCommerce (Amazon) and Ebay appeared, and the first collaborative platform were born. At the turn of the new millennium, platforms for the exchange of knowledge (Wikipedia), and sales of goods / services between individuals (Kijiji) were born. It is at the turn of the millennium, with the emergence of social media, that the first practices of couchsurfing and co-rent (Airbnb), and pooling of urban transport (Uber, Lyft) took root. Then, video and audio streaming subscription sites (Netflix, Soundcloud), and music (Spotify).

Understanding Web Accessibility & Why It Is Important | #ModernEDU

Understanding Web Accessibility & Why It Is Important | #ModernEDU | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

Web accessibility is the need of the hour. I realized something a few weeks back when I went to a nearby ATM for cash withdrawal. I noticed that the machine had specific buttons embossed with dots written in Braille that could be read by a visually challenged person. This feature has been made compulsory by the central bank so that all the visually impaired people can use the facility of ATM without any hassle. It is one example how our new world has finally accepted that people with disabilities should be able to do everything that those without disabilities can. And this is what web accessibility is all about.

Defining Web Accessibility

To put it simply, web accessibility is the designing of the Website so that people – particularly people with disabilities – can use it comfortably. To elaborate further, Web accessibility defines that people with disabilities can perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with the Web, and that they can contribute to the Web. It also benefits others, including older people with changing abilities due to aging.

Web Accessibility challenges all disabilities, impairments and barriers that affect the access and contribution to the web. This includes all visual, auditory, physical, speech, cognitive, and all other neurological disabilities that make it difficult or impossible to use any website.

Ideally, you’ll be able to find, in general terms:

Inspiration: to stimulate your creativity and help you come up with more original ideas.

Focus: to keep you as productive as possible and minimize time waste.

Comfort: to reduce your stress levels (and risk of injury).

Efficiency - Wikipedia

A common but confusing way of distinguishing between efficiency and effectiveness is the saying "Efficiency is doing things right, while effectiveness is doing the right things." This saying indirectly emphasizes that the selection of objectives of a production process is just as important as the quality of that process.

Efficiency is very often confused with effectiveness. In general, efficiency is a measurable concept, quantitatively determined by the ratio of useful output to total input. Effectiveness is the simpler concept of being able to achieve a desired result, which can be expressed quantitatively but doesn't usually require more complicated mathematics than addition.

Efficiency can often be expressed as a percentage of the result that could ideally be expected, for example if no energy were lost due to friction or other causes, in which case 100% of fuel or other input would be used to produce the desired result. This does not always apply, not even in all cases in which efficiency can be assigned a numerical value, e.g. not for specific impulse.

Digital is making students masters of their own learning universe

Digital is making students masters of their own learning universe | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

New ways of learning, owing much to digital technology and scientific research, are empowering students and business trainees.

The challenge we face is that learning is often not built to fit the learners,” says Dr Itiel Dror, a cognitive neuroscientist from University College London. “There is a mismatch between the learning and the learners. Learning must be ‘brain friendly’, so it’s engaging, motivating and effective.

The sector is being forced to step up its game. Since education operates in a world where millennials now check their phones more than 100 times a day, e-learning solutions must compete aggressively with the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Candy Crush, which are just a distracting tap away.

“The use of technology, by itself, does not enhance learning, it depends on how it’s utilised. That is a great challenge and we are far from using technology to its full potential,” says Dr Dror, a world expert on learning.

The problem lies with most educational systems, globally. Since Victorian times, they’ve been creating mostly dependent learners. Beyond the classroom, students are like fish out of water, gasping for air. They’re reliant on the oxygen of teachers, discipline and schooling to acquire new skills.

This isn’t necessarily creating self-starters thirsty for knowledge and masters of their own learning.

Self-directed strategies are increasingly needed because a dependent-learner strategy cannot keep pace with the latest business developments, says Vincent Belliveau, executive vice president of Cornerstone OnDemand.

The true democratisation of education is now in full swing. “If we want to reach a level of greater learning empowerment, we must provide learners with the authority to be able to curate their own content and the resources to facilitate this. It’s only then that we will truly find learning empowerment,” Mr Belliveau concludes. The tools are all in place. It’s only a matter of time.

The Critical 21st Century Skills Every Learner Needs and Why | #ModernEDUcation #ModernLEARNing | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
Preparing a child for the world that doesn’t yet exist is not an easy task for any teacher. Step back and look at that picture from a broad perspective. What are the critical 21st-century skills every learner needs to survive and succeed in our world? What abilities and traits will serve them in a time that’s changing and developing so rapidly?

They want to be challenged and inspired in their learning. They want to collaborate and work with their peers. They want to incorporate the technology they love into their classroom experiences as much as they can. In short, they have just as high a set of expectations of their educators as their educators have of them.

How Are Educators Responding?

The Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority, (ACARA), have identified the following as the General Capabilities they see as essential for learners:

Critical and creative thinking

Personal and social capability

Ethical understanding

Intercultural understanding

Information and communication technology capability

Literacy

Teaching Electronics to Kids: Mechanically Programmed (no Circuit Board) Obstacle Avoiding Robot | #MakerED

Teaching Electronics to Kids: Mechanically Programmed (no Circuit Board) Obstacle Avoiding Robot | #MakerED | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

Welcome to the exciting world of teaching STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) to your own kids or for charitable work. Kids are naturally curious about how things work, and with a new trend in hardware companies creating open source hardware products, it's a great time to teach kids about electronics. But modern technology can seem too complex to even begin to understand. So where do you start?

About the Robot: This robot will run on tile, wood, laminate, low cut carpet, or other smooth surfaces. As it is designed, it will not work on extremely rough surfaces such as concrete, shag or tall carpet, grass, and such. The rough cost of this robot should be less than $10. On average, about $5~7 dollars if you look. You can find the majority of these parts on Amazon, salvage from Goodwill, garage sales, or other places..

How to use blogging as a powerful promotional tool for small businesses | #Blogs #Marketing

How to use blogging as a powerful promotional tool for small businesses | #Blogs #Marketing | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

Blogging is a trendy activity in today’s marketplace. Most businesses, companies, and influencers are developing and growing their professional blogs with one purpose: business growth. A blog will often improve the expansion of brands in the marketplace. The more popular a blog becomes the better awareness will the business receive.

Perceive your own business like a powerful mechanism that can satisfy a specific target audience. However, before your products or services get to satisfy anyone’s needs or solve anyone’s problems, you –the brain of the company – has to supply a consistent flow of interested customers.

How do you do that? Well, you can run a blog and deliver massive amounts of traffic to your business offer. Thousands of people will hear about your brand’s name, and that’s only because they’ve been tempted to arrive to and consume one of your blog posts. In fact, here’s a list of benefits that blogging shall bring to your business performance:

More traffic towards your business website through SEO channels.
Blog posts’ call-to-actions (CTAs) generate new leads and potential sales.

Improves your authority in the field because of the quality content you share.

A great feedback machine (ask visitors at the end of posts to share insights).

Your business can become viral because one blog post becomes viral.

Movers shakers & policy makers - Carol Dweck, author, professor of psychology | #GrowthMindset #ModernEDU

Movers shakers & policy makers - Carol Dweck, author, professor of psychology | #GrowthMindset #ModernEDU | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
What would you say are a few of the biggest myths about growth mindset?

OK, myth No.1 is the myth that it’s all about effort, and that you instil it by praising effort. Effort is one factor that leads to learning. So the ultimate value is growth, progress, learning. And effort is one thing that leads there but there are many other things – strategies, using resources, getting advice, guidance and mentorship, and when people leave that out and just praise effort, it’s not transmitting a growth mindset. Adults have nagged children for centuries to try harder. That’s not a growth mindset, it’s an adult nagging a child to try harder!

Also, we find that when teachers think it’s just about effort and praising effort they may praise effort that isn’t even there, or that’s not effective. So if a child tries hard at something and you say ‘great job, you tried hard’, but they didn’t make progress, they didn’t advance, you’re actually conveying a fixed mindset because you’re saying ‘great effort, I didn’t really expect you to do that, and I don’t expect you to do that, so I’m trying to make you feel good about not doing it’. So we need people to understand that it’s appreciating a variety of process variables that lead to learning.

The second myth is that you can teach students a lesson on growth mindset and put a poster up in the front of the room, and that’s that, that they will have a growth mindset from then on. And we know if the teacher doesn’t then embody a growth mindset, if teachers don’t embody growth mindsets in their teaching practices, in the way that they give feedback when the child is stuck, and the way they present a new unit, in the way that they give opportunities for revision and growth of understanding – if they don’t embody that growth mindset, they are not teaching it. And in fact, if their behaviour contradicts the poster at the front of the room, then maybe they’re doing a disservice.

Great reminders of several aspects what I call appreciative leadership.  "Effort is one factor that leads to learning. So the ultimate value is growth, progress, learning.
