Kodar is the mountain range in the centre of Transbaikalia. Stretches within Irkutsk Oblast and Zabaykalsky Krai in Siberia, Russia. It’s a part of Stanovoye plateau as well as the extension of North Muiskiy Range.

Kodar mountains’ length is 200 km. The maximum hight is 3072 km (Pik BAM). Includes 30 glaciers the total area of which is 19 sq km. The biggest glacier is Azarov.

Transbaikalia’s Kodar Range was one of places used instensively by Stalin’s GULAG system. There are many remains of labour camps located in canyons. Gulag camps’s mission was to mine coal and copper.

Call it an Alpine fever dream. Or disorientation from a nearly utopian week in Italy’s vertiginous, bone-white Dolomite Mountain region, hiking through verdant valleys and along exposed ridgelines, dining on impeccable rustic fare and drinking too much red wine. Or just chalk it up to childlike enthusiasm mixed with overconfidence.

I am just back from Switzerland (midnight yesterday) after great week glacier trekking and climbing in Bernese Oberland...

This past winter I met a Pole guy, who traveled across the whole Russia many, many, many… I think, too many times. He said, “Forget about active volcanoes in Kamchatka. The best place in the peninsula is Kronotsky Nature Reserve. This is a must!”

So, why Kronotsky Nature Reserve?

“You can see a LOT of brown bears‘ walking around Kronotsky Lake or fishing in it. It is the place, where it is possible to enjoy in one spot… Kamchatka’s wildlife, geysers, mountains and volcanoes,” his argument was.

They don’t call this the ‘wild west’ for nothing. Red Earth, robust baobab trees and brownish rivers – the remote Western region of the country epitomizes Madagascar at its most exotic. With few roads connecting here to the rest of the country, this hard-to-reach region is pockmarked with hidden caves, towering cliffs, winding rivers and pockets of unexplored forests; Amongst which, the most bizarre attraction has got to be the rock pinnacle forest: Tsingy de Bemahara.

Called the invisible continent, as it is comprised of more water than land, Australia and Oceania is a huge geopolitical region of boundaries which are rather hard to define. Capturing the beauty of this water world is also an ambitious challenge. The words and pictures, although insufficient to express the true beauty of this region, may at least spur your imagination and wanderlust.
