Rapt in Translation; Zombie ZoologyIn the novella "Translator Translated," one of three in Anita Desai's collection "The Artist of Disappearance" (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 156 pages, $23), a reclusive professor named Perma Joshi experiences a rare joyful feeling of communion as she translates a novel from the Indian language Oriya into English. "I was only the conduit, the medium between that language and this," she says, "but I was the one doing the selecting, the discriminating, and I was the only one who could; the writer herself could not." Perma, who adores the novelist, concludes with satisfaction that the act of translation brought the two women together "as if we were sisters."

While the widespread global use of the internet has done some ridiculously amazing things for the understanding of languages, it has also led to some serious issues. That's why we were intrigued when we stumbled upon this article on an EU policy/debate site entitled "The Internet: A lifeboat for endangered languages?". While they could use some help capitalizing their article titles, the EU is an organization that knows a thing or two (or 23) about multilingualism, so their thoughts on the issue are definitely to be taken seriously.
