EDITOR: On the subject of the new translation of the Catholic Mass, I would like to offer some background information. The Second Vatican Council called for the Mass to be said in the language of the people, the vernacular, instead of in Latin.

Listening, like other skills, can be developed through practice, or lost if not used regularly. Good listeners focus on what they are hearing. They pause to think about what they’ve heard before responding. They ask questions because they want to know the answers, not just to keep the conversation going. Do you often find yourself in the company of good listeners? Would you describe yourself as a good listener? Why or why not?

As translators bring text from one language to another, one seemingly-small matter makes a big difference: punctuation. You might think that there’s nothing to it, but as with most aspects of translation, punctuation is not as simple as you think.

During my recent webinar with eCPD webinars, I mentioned that I’ve seen tons of CVs as a project manager in my last in-house job. I was then asked by one of attendees what to do to become a project manager. Just one sentence of warning before we start: project management has very little to do with translation.
Project management seems to be the Lost Paradise for many freelance translators. Some of us really believe that project management is a step higher in our career. We keep being translators until we are experienced and mature enough to become project managers. This thinking is so wrong. I’m not saying that a translator can’t or shouldn’t become a project manager. I’m only suggesting that if you are a good translator, you won’t necessarily make a good translation project manager. And you may even hate the job!

It seems that by using GT through a CAT tool may indeed result in Google retaining the source documents, even if only in segments. But Google Translation Toolkit clearly is NOT included in the list of the prohibited resources because, as Samuel pointed out, they are offering solid confidentiality of the documents in the Additional TOS (not sure how to highlight stuff here, sorry):

Throughout this semester in Intercultural Communication, I have learned a great amount about how to really look into a certain culture no matter how different it is from the one I grew up in. We live in a world where you can communicate with anyone in the world through the Internet and that allows us to see into someone’s world without ever leaving the couch. It is important to understand how you come across to someone who grew up with a completely different lifestyle and just being aware of your actions when you are meeting someone new.....

Many teachers who have had the opportunity to read discourse analysis either at University or on a PD course such as the Cambridge DELTA, express great interest in this way of studying connected text or talk, but just as many find it hard to incorporate it into their teaching; apart from an occasional lesson focusing on cohesive devices, referents or discourse markers, I must admit I have not seen much by way of other important concepts in discourse, especially related to the study of conversation analysis, an area which should be of intense interest to anyone teaching spoken English.

In most needs driven courses nowadays, there will be some components responding to the need of learners to acquire sociolinguistic competence and the wise ESP teacher will have phrases and functional listings, plus activities to get the studetnts to do things with this language – ranking, labelling, matching, analysing, using, etc....

Its a great idea, but for it to actually be used in schools, many districts around the country will have to modify their filters to allow teachers to access at least this portion of YouTube.

A surprising piece of news was buried in an article this week. Friday, The Mercury News reported the three top executives at Google, Larry Page, Sergey Brin and Eric Schmidt, are offering to pay $33 million to finish the restoration of the historic airship hangar at Moffett Field. The giant structure, built in the 1930s and called Hangar One, sits a few miles from the Googleplex and it’s well known the Google executives have special permission from NASA to park their jets at Moffett.

The jets are not owned or operated by Google. Instead, the 3 Google leaders operate the fleet through an LLC called H211. Google has no official relation with H211. Ken Ambrose, the Director of Operations for H211, announced the funding offer at a public meeting this week. He also complained that NASA, which owns Hangar One, has taken too long to respond to the offer.
