This post is really just something that has been spinning through my head for the past few months, inspired by an article I read questioning such a distinction and the nature of the two terms. As such, I am very much eager to hear others' arguments and opinions on the subject. As should be mentioned before long, I am primarily talking about rodents.

Do these functions matter, meaning can cognition and emotion ever be twisted apart; does this unraveling even matter, since they are so inter-connected and joined that maybe they are one entity; finally, maybe more importantly, are these terms neurally meaningless and just semantically-null labels we give functions because we can simply ask the questions and label the function?

-Après avoir été traducteur d'une quinzaine d'œuvres de fiction d'auteurs arabes, vous vous lancez dans l'écriture d'un roman. Qu'est-ce qui a motivé cette orientation vers l'écriture romanesque ?

Etre traducteur littéraire, c'est être déjà écrivain, dans la mesure où on manie la langue et les images de la même manière, avec en plus la contrainte d'être fidèle à ce que l'auteur a voulu exprimer. Sur cet aspect du maniement de la langue, j'étais donc en terrain familier, mais je ne pensais pas avoir suffisamment d'imagination pour écrire un roman de mon invention. Ce qui m'a finalement décidé, c'est que le rêve d'écrire (et donc de raconter cette histoire que je portais en moi) a été plus fort que la peur de manquer d'imagination.

Autour de la parution en France de l'ouvrage Le Poisson et le Bananier, une fabuleuse histoire de la traduction, l'auteur David Bellos et son traducteur Daniel Loaysa se sont exprimés sur le travail de traduction, sous la houlette de Cathy Ytak, membre de l'Association des Traducteurs Littéraires de France.

L'un est professeur à l'université de Princeton, a traduit Perec et écrit sur Jacques Tati. L'autre est hélleniste, a traduit Sophocle, mais aussi Shakespeare, ou encore Tennessee Williams. Ils ont été présentés par Flammarion. Peu importe s'ils ne se connaissaient pas. « Ce qui compte, c'est le rapport d'amitié, le fait de tout se dire, de ne rien laisser passer ».

Daniel Everett is a linguist who is best known for his studies of the language of the Pirahã people of the Amazon basin. His new book, Language: The Cultural Tool (Profile Books, £14.99), explores his theory that language isn't innate but a tool developed by humans to solve problems.

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College students in the Interpreter Training Technology program will be performing “Interpreting Life: An Artistic Interpreting Musical Finale” at the Jefferson Davis Campus Fine Arts Auditorium on March 30 at 9:30 a.m. The theme this year is "life," and the nine students in the program have each chosen a solo song to match the theme. They will perform the songs in American Sign Language (ASL).

A precis is a short summary.
It is not a paraphrase, which merely says in different andsimpler words exactly what the passage being paraphrased has to say. A paraphrase may bea long as the passage itself. A precis rarely is more than one-third the length of the originalselection and may be only one-fourth as long.
A precis gives only the "heart" of a passage.
It omits repetition and such details asexamples, illustrations, and adjectives unless they are of unusual importance.
A precis is written entirely in the words of the person writing it, not in the words of the original selection.
Avoid the temptation to lift long phrases and whole sentences fromthe original.

Les positions de l’écrivain et essayiste kenyan Ngugi Wa Thiong’o sont originales, fortes et provocantes. Elles sont connues de longue date chez les Anglophones. As of this week the Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR) at SOAS has 52 online deposits available comprising around 51,000 files. There are 12,700 data bundles in the online collection, of which 6,000 are available to any registered user and a further 5,000 require access approval from the depositors. The number of users is now 515 with one or two people registering (via this web form) each week.

A study that appears to have received virtually no attention since its appearance online last year suggests that the stress of being Catholic or a “born-again” Protestant takes a toll by causing a quicker atrophy of one part of the brain.

But it also says that those without religious affiliation are hit hard, too.
