Ghana National Association of the Deaf (GNAD) wants government to encourage more people to learn sign language and employ more sign language translators in order to promote equal participation in the country's educational system.

The Association laments that currently, the use of sign language and sign language interpretation are not being encouraged by the Ministry of Education, hence making it difficult for deaf people to get admission into schools.

"The use of sign language and sign language interpreters in schools are not being encouraged by the Education Ministry in the country and if an institution wishes to admit deaf students to their programme, it is the deaf student who is to struggle to get an interpreter and pay them," it added.

Speaking at a forum on Deaf Education in Accra on Tuesday, the President of GNAD, Mr Emmanuel K. Sackey, mentioned lack of qualified sign language teachers and sign language interpretation in higher schools, among others, as some of the problems of Deaf Education in the country.

He said most of the Schools for Deaf in the country were overcrowded due to insufficient accommodation and inadequate furniture and beds.
