Mexico failed to deliver millions of gallons of water to South Texas farmers, in defiance of a 1944 treaty. Now, members of Texas’ congressional delegation are calling on the Trump administration to make Mexico’s failure a part of upcoming trade negotiations — including new sanctions if necessary.
The treatment plant will be less likely to overflow and contaminate, won’t use oil in its operations, will use less electricity and will use ultraviolet lights rather than chemicals for the second stage of disinfection.
Corpus Christi city leaders provided updates on multiple water infrastructure projects during a press conference today, outlining plans to significantly expand the city's water supply capacity over the coming years.
The Lower Colorado River Authority’s Arbuckle Reservoir just came online, marking the first large water storage project completed by the authority since the 1950s.
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality voted today to approve a wastewater discharge permit for Municipal Operations LLC, advancing plans for the Guajolote Ranch development in northwest Bexar County. The permit allows the release of up to 1 million gallons of treated wastewater per day into Helotes Creek, a tributary that feeds directly into the Edwards Aquifer — the primary drinking water source for more than 2.5 million people across Central Texas.
Maria-Elena Giner faced a room full of farmers, irrigation managers and residents in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas on April 2. The local agricultural community was reeling. Reservoirs on the Rio Grande were near record lows and the state had already warned that water cutbacks would be necessary. The last sugar mill in the region closed in February, citing the lack of water.
McAllen city leaders recently approved a nearly 40% increase to its water rates in order to pay for nearly $200 million in loans that will fund the construction of a desalination plant and several groundwater wells.
Cyberattacks on local government entities are increasingly common, costly and difficult to detect and repel. Jurisdictions that fail to adequately protect themselves from cybersecurity risks can face disruptions of critical services, exposure of sensitive data, increased insurance costs and potentially lower bond ratings. It’s a problem that deserves more attention from the public and public officials.
The Mayor Pro Tem of Bastrop, John Kirkland, is opposed to Austin Water's Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) project, which would pump treated surface water into the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer beneath Bastrop County, due to potential risks of depleting local wells and contaminating the aquifer.
Liberty Hill launched the Pure Water LHTX program late last year, an initiative that involves sending treated wastewater to an advanced water purification facility where it’s converted into drinking water.
The city of Laredo issued an emergency advisory Friday after oil was discovered in part of the city's wastewater system, officials said. Laredo Mayor Dr. Victor Trevino signed the proclamation Oct. 17, citing city and state environmental authority to act once the leak was found.

The 14th Court of Appeals has granted the San Jacinto River Authority immunity from several Hurricane Harvey lawsuits. An East Texas groundwater conservation district is negotiating a legal path that would pause a plan to pump billions of gallons of water out of the region. The Neches & Trinity Valleys Groundwater Conservation District is allowing its lawyers to settle a lawsuit with a poultry farm that sued the district, which gave preliminary approval to a Dallas-area company to install 40 high-capacity water wells above the Carrizo Wilcox Aquifer.
San Marcos is suing a regional water authority over an attempted water supply project, alleging it paid millions of dollars and is wrongfully being billed despite not receiving any water. The Hays County city of about 70,000 people has seen increasing demand for water as its population has swelled. In 2021, San Marcos officials signed a contract with Canyon Regional Water Authority to provide treated water to the city.
If approved, Proposition 4 would generate $20 billion dedicated to state water projects over the next twenty years and up to $1B of sales tax revenue going into the Texas Water Fund every year starting in 2027.

When Elida Castillo drives around Corpus Christi, she doesn’t see a city about to run out of water. Instead, Castillo, who leads an environmental advocacy group called Chispa Texas, sees car washes opening; houses being built in new subdivisions; new refinery smokestacks sprouting along Corpus Christi Bay. But the city is running out of water. If nothing changes by late next year the city will begin curtailing usage by 25%, leaving both residents and the region’s massive petrochemical industry to figure how to make do with a lot less.
