Wichita Falls City Council approved a more than $1.9 million purchase to replace equipment at the Cypress Water Treatment Plant. The Cypress Reverse Osmosis Plant has treated the city’s water since it came online in 2008. City Director of Public Works Russell Schreiber told council members the replacement equipment is needed to keep the facility operating properly.

Despite rainfall during late September, drought conditions across Texas expanded for the 10th week in a row, impacting more than 90% of the state’s surface area for the first time since August 2022. According to the most recent “Water Weekly” report from the Texas Water Development Board, 92% of Texas was impacted by drought conditions as of the week of Sept. 29, compared to 84% the previous week, 32% three months ago, and 24% one year ago.

While Texas' east coast has remained largely dry amid a quiet hurricane season, another round of heavy rain is about to sweep across West and Central Texas. Stretches of West and Central Texas could see "torrential rain" beginning Wednesday and continuing into Thursday morning, according to The Eyewall's Matt Lanza. A group of 29 Texas state representatives is asking the Public Utility Commission to investigate Aqua Texas as customers across the state face higher water and wastewater bills under the company’s interim rates. Keller City Council members voted unanimously on Sept. 15 to approve a $111.9 million budget for fiscal year 2027, along with a property tax rate increase described as 2 cents per $100 of valuation. The spending plan funds the largest public safety pay adjustment in a decade, new police equipment, and a five-year capital improvement program, while nudging up what the average homeowner pays each year.

Residents of Calliham will soon have a new water well and wastewater treatment system. A community meeting was held Sept. 29 to discuss the plans, explain what residents can expect during construction and give them an opportunity to ask questions about the projects. County Judge James Teal led the meeting and said drilling for the new water well is expected to begin in early October. The pad has been prepared, and approval has been received from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

The City of Portland has entered into a 40-year agreement with Gulf Coast Growth Ventures to sell reclaimed wastewater from the city's treatment plant for use in the company's industrial operations as part of efforts to aid in a water availability effort region-wide. The agreement, announced Oct. 1, aims to repurpose treated wastewater currently discharged into Nueces Bay and preserve local freshwater supplies for residential and commercial users.
