The European Commission has confirmed that the UK Government could have given state aid support to Redcar steelworks. In response to a written question from Euro MP for the North East Jude Kirton-Darling they state there are a wide range of reasons that state aid can be given to industries. The Redcar plant stopped production in September in a move which has devastated workers and the whole community. There were calls for the UK Government to act to support the steelworks but no help was provided.

Retail giant Next has been criticised for poor treatment of its apprentices.
A Channel 4 Dispatches programme last night claimed the chain had slashed £2.5m off its wage bill by employing hundreds of low-earning apprentices, while giving them inadequate training in return.

There’s one thing above all you should know about Brexit before you decide how to vote: the contents of Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty. The full text is below. “It’s a real horror—and no one outside the negotiations really knows about it,” said one senior official to me.
Clause 4 says that after a country has decided to leave, the other EU members will decide the terms—and the country leaving cannot be in the room in those discussions. Repeat: we’d have no say at all on the terms on which we’d deal with the EU from then on, and no opportunity to reconsider.

Activists who identify as being on the “soft left” of the Labour party have launched a new group called Open Labour that will aim to represent the views of “normal” Labour members. The group is overtly setting itself up as a rival to Momentum, the grassroots activist campaign that backed Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership bid and is becoming an increasingly influential force within the Labour Party. Many people consider Momentum to be a “hard left” political organisation.
