Workers of Helwan Cement and Torah Cement protested Saturday in front of the Cabinet headquarters demanding the implementation of court orders concerning their financial demands. They also threatened to stage a sit-in and strike in the two companies if their demands are not met. Workers who have recently joined the early retirement programme in the two companies want to receive similar compensation to their colleagues who joined the programme earlier.

Britain is threatened with the destruction of our railway engineering industry as the government awards its £1.4 billion Thameslink rolling stock contract to the German transnational Siemens, rather than to Canadian transnational Bombardier, which operates the privatised remains of the once mighty British Rail Engineering in Derby. The "ripple effects" of the destruction of 1,400 Bombardier jobs will be disastrous in Derby and the Midlands, with a further 13,000 subcontractor and supply chain jobs likely to go.

On 16 June, 35 Palestinian workers at Salit Quarries in Mishor Adumim (in area C, east of Jerusalem, in the Occupied West Bank) began a strike. The workers, organized with the independent union WAC-Ma'an, are demanding an end to exploitation and humiliation, and insist on signing a first collective agreement. Salit Quarries’ main customer is Readymix Industries (Israel). The total reliance of Salit Quarry on Readymix as their biggest and by far the most important customer puts responsibility on Readymix to make sure that their clients abides by labour laws and safeguards elementary rights for the workers of Salit. We call upon Readymix to urge the Salit management to terminate this unnecessary strike by signing the collective agreement with the workers and WAC-Ma’an.

On Friday July 22nd, in the midst of a looming showdown between the Labour Movement and the PP government over the 5% wage cap, the management of National Maintenance, Training and Security Company (MTS) has made the provocative offer of 5% (2-1-2) to the recognised majority union, the Transport and Industrial Workers’ Union (TIWU). The management of the state enterprise which made a profit of more than $23 million in 2010 made it clear to the union’s negotiating team that they had no wriggle room and were acting under instructions. The contract period for which the negotiations are taking place expired in June. This means that MTS workers are on 2008 salaries.

RAIL union RMT highlighted concerns today over the Siemens Thameslink bid after revealing that it doesn't have a tried, tested and compliant set of bogies - a framework carrying wheels - for its proposed fleet. The £1.5 billion contract for the Thameslink rail project has been given to German firm Siemens, which was chosen over British manufacturer Bombardier. Without the contract, hundreds of jobs at the Bombardier Crusade plant in Derby could go.
