In the 63 YouGov polls since David Cameron became PM there has been one clear pattern. He's bombed. He has gone from highs of +47% in approval ratings to today's record low of -16% as PM. That's a net turnaround of 63%. Since June of 2010, more than 10 million voters have ceased to approve of the PM. And a whopping 16 million extra now disapprove of him. That's a net change in the opinions of 26million voters.

Britain's profiteering energy firms were in the spotlight again today for plotting fresh price rises and conning customers into switching to more expensive contracts. German-owned firms Eon and Npower are reportedly poised to foist bigger bills on their 15 million customers just days after Scottish and Southern said they would raise gas prices by 18 per cent and electricity by 11 per cent on September 14.

A small but growing number of commentators have analysed the way Tory policies make the average person worse off. New data released on police numbers and crime also show the way Tory cuts are making you less safe. Even the Tories admit that the recession, which their cuts policies are deepening, will raise the threat of crime. In particular crime is increased by the cuts in welfare benefits – which is what the Tories are concentrating on.

The collapse of a legal battle to win compensation for birth defects allegedly caused by anti-epileptic drugs has prompted the launch of a new trust to secure financial aid for parents. Hundreds of children whose mothers took the anti-convulsant Epilim during pregnancy have been afflicted by problems such as spina bifida, hip, face and bone deformities, limb malformation and spinal problems alongside a risk of cardiovascular damage. Their families had sought legal aid to challenge manufacturer Sanofi Aventis in a bid to secure compensation. But due to legal loopholes and cash-strapped legal aid funding their case fell through earlier this year. Now the families have launched the Fetal Anti-Convulsant Trust (Fact), which will work towards securing financial help for all parents whose children have been affected by anti-epilepsy medications.

The government wants everyone else to take responsibility to learn English and integrate. The Equality Impact Assessment published this week on the changes to English for Speakers of Other Languages funding sends this message again. Individual learners, colleges and the voluntary sector are top of the list in being asked to find the extra resources. The government recognises that its changes to ESOL will have a negative impact but passes the buck. Well the buck needs to take a U turn, argues James Lee.

25/07/2011) UNISON’s campaign against the government’s pensions’ proposals got surprise backing this weekend from Health Secretary Andrew Lansley, after a letter he wrote to the Treasury was leaked to a national newspaper. In the letter, Andrew Lansley warns that the proposals are ‘inappropriate’ and ‘unrealistic’, and would hit women particularly hard. He reiterated one of the union’s big concerns, that putting contributions up would force people to leave the schemes and rely on benefits when they retire – storing up a massive bill for the taxpayer.
