A statue of French soccer player Zinedine Zidane headbutting another player in the 2010 World Cup Final is being taken down in Qatar, the site of the 2018 World Cup after media and public backlash. The Qatari Museum Authority succumed to external pressure for change and appeased the public by taking down the staue of one of the most iconic moments in the history of the World Cup. This was the right decision from a marketing standpoint, I really don't know why they put this up in the first place because it represents something the sport doesn't encourage, especially in a country where they will be hosting a World Cup.

This goes along with social responsibility of both parties involved because you want to ensure to the fans that all games being played are played at the highest level of competition. To market to a fanbase, you can't market a product that is tainted in some way ad the same goes for sports and preventing thrown games because of gambling. |
