The parents/teacher relationship used to happen once a term at parents’ evenings when every parent can have 5 minutes with each teacher to discuss a whole term’s work, while the next parents in the queue eavesdropped.

These new-fangled communications technologies we’re always talking about mean that schools can be in near-constant contact with parents to send reminders and messages and help keep their kids’ education and welfare on the straight and narrow

5 ways to create a safer digital environment at your school

5 ways to create a safer digital environment at your school | TechTalk | Scoop.it
Two authors share tips that school technology administrators can use to make their own jobs easier while supporting their institutions with solid, safe IT practices.
Mel Riddile's insight:

"School staff is working toward a common goal, but from differing viewpoints. “When it comes to technology usage and student safety, everyone working with a school comes at the issue from a different angle,” says Brown, who explains that there are administrators, teachers, students, parents, and other constituents to consider when developing good technology usage policies. And while everyone generally has the same common goal of keeping students safe, “everyone also has a different perspective on how that will work—or, what actually poses a threat.”

Virginia School System At Risk For Cyberattack.

WTOP-FM Washington (5/8, Smith) reports on its website that the Virginia school system “may not have the resources” to safeguard parent and teacher information. The Virginia Cyber Security Commission Paul Kurtz said Wednesday that while the problem is widespread, smaller districts appear to be particularly vulnerable. He adds that the issue’s importance will only grow as more technology is used in the classroom. Kurtz recommended school systems protect their information and adds that the commission looks to confront the commonwealth’s state-wide network.

Import, Filter, Visualise And Publish Any Spreadsheet Online: Silk

Via Robin Good
Robin Good's curator insight, May 8, 2015 5:03 AM

Silk is a web tool to publish online spreadsheet-based data on a specific topic.

The service, which just released a new version of its offering, allows to easily convert any existing data-set into professional-looking data displays, charts, grids, and lists that can be embedded on any site and which can be viewed in multiple ways.

The value of Silk is specifically in making it easy and immediate for anyone to elegantly display and publish data sets in one of several alternative formats which include:

  • Table
  • List
  • Grid
  • Mosaic
  • Groups
  • Bars
  • Map
  • Donut
  • Line
  • Pie
  • Scatter
  • Stacks

How it works: Import a table from Excel, Google Sheets or any .csv file, select the fields you want to import and Silk does the rest offering you tools to filter, edit and select your preferred visualization approach.

You can also create data sets and displays from scratch inside Silk, and set each Silk either as public or private.

Why it is relevant for content curators: Silk provides a unique and powerful opportunity to leverage existing data and information assets, spreadsheets and databases and to convert them into highly legible and visually impactful data displays on a very specific topic.

My evaluation: Paired with the power of Kimonolabs or Import.io to convert any website or page content into a spreadsheet, it offers great potential in creating value by providing multiple professional formats to display, present and interact with such data.
Great tool for curating data-based information assets.

Free forever for public Silks of up to 3000 pages.

Is Ed Tech Always a Good Thing?

Is Ed Tech Always a Good Thing? | TechTalk | Scoop.it

"Technology should be used to enhance learning, but we need to be careful that it doesn’t become the focal point. As much as I am a proponent for online education and all the tools that go along with it, it is hardly a substitute for live teacher-student interaction.

Still, ed tech is here to stay – as is evident by the infographic below (created by ISTE)."

Computer troubles (yet again) create havoc on testing day in FL (state test)

Computer troubles (yet again) create havoc on testing day in FL (state test) | TechTalk | Scoop.it
The state blames the vendor.

Students across Florida were supposed to spend Monday taking computer-based standardized exams — high school students, end-of-course tests; kids in Grades 5-10, the math portion of the new high-stakes Florida Standards Assessment.

Mel Riddile's insight:

In some states, it is the vendor. In others, the problem is the state computers and servers. In some instances, the district is the problem. While in other situations, the school has the problem.

States, districts, and schools with more experience with online testing have fewer issues.

Dragging educational assessment into the 21st Century has proven to be much more difficult that anticipated, unless one goes through a multi-year transition process as our school did. Then you completely understand the potential issues.

These are predictable problems that must, at some time, be addressed before we can enter the modern age.
