Teens, Technology and Friendships

Teens, Technology and Friendships | TechTalk | Scoop.it
American teens don't just make friends in the schoolyard or neighborhood — many are finding new friends online. Video games, social media and mobile phones play an integral role in how teens meet and interact.

Mel Riddile's insight:

Asking kids to power down is really asking them to disconnect from their peers. I suspect I would not have responded favorably to such a request at that age.

How Technology is Changing the Way People Learn

"We can make all sorts of assumptions about the way technology is changing learning, but what does the science actually say? According to Alfred Spector, Google’s vice president of research, it says a lot. For example, virtual tutors have helped average students reach the top 2% of their course; video games provide immersive environments that take the bordedom out of studying; and social networks are being used to increase interaction between students."

Technology...some argue for it and others against it, but was does the research say? This post explores current research. Sections include:

* Better at maths, worse at reading - In short, "edtech applications boost mathematics achievement, especially when individualized computer-assisted instruction is involved."

* More games, bigger brains - Research shows that playing video games can make an impact on the brain. One study cited stated "a robust positive association between the cortical thickness and video game duration in teens who invested the most time in games." Two areas of the brain, the prefrontal cortex (responsible for decision making and self-control) and the Frontal Eye Fields (which govern visual-motor processing) showed cortical matter increases.

* Selective knowledge, shallow creativity - This section discusses how technology may make it easier for us to recall information. Are we potentially "outsourcing our knowledge to digital tools"?

What do you think? Many schools are moving towards 1-to-1 digital devices to help students learn. Will this improve their outcomes at school? This post explores some of the issues that may help us choose the best ways to use digital tools, and when it may be better to approach learning using other methods.

Out-of-school broadband access is essential to narrowing the growing tech gap.

Out-of-school broadband access is essential to narrowing the growing tech gap. | TechTalk | Scoop.it
Democratic FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel called for a variety of strategies to support out-of-school access to high speed broadband during a speech at ISTE 2015.

Education Technology Advocates Stress Need For Broadband Access Out Of School.

Benjamin Herold writes at the Education Week (6/29, Herold) “Digital Education” blog that education advocates attending the annual conference of the International Society for Technology and Education in Philadelphia signaled that they are planning on “turning their attention to a trio of policy issues they say could threaten the spread of personalized digital learning.” The foremost of those issues is the expansion of access to broadband outside of school. One speaker at the event, Democratic Federal Communications Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel, lamented that most teachers assign homework requiring online access, “even though one third of households do not subscribe to broadband.”

Mel Riddile's insight:

As the principal of a high-poverty 1-to-1 school, 24/7 access to high speed broadband was a must for our students. Without it, the gap widens because the rich get richer, while the poor remain essentially unchanged.

MindMup

MindMup | TechTalk | Scoop.it

Another way MindMup is now allowing you to work with larger groups easier is a quick notification mechanism when someone changes a node. You'll get a small speech bubble pop up for several seconds and disappear automatically, so it's easy to keep an eye on the entire team or classroom. At the moment, this only works for node text changes, but in the future we'll add other notification types.

Up Periscope? New Rules for the Latest Social Media Tool

Up Periscope? New Rules for the Latest Social Media Tool | TechTalk | Scoop.it

"I’ve always been a fan of sharing openly.  I sometimes tell people that my life is an open book that no one wants to read.  The nature of my job and my position is one that interacts regularly with social media as both a way of learning and a means of sharing.

Recently, I’ve been captivated by the phenomena of Meerkat  and Periscope.  As I’ve seen throughout my many years in Ed Tech, whenever a new tool hits the market there are usually a slew of early adopters running out to grab it, figure out what it does, then figure out how we can use it for education.  I’m usually one of those first-adopters, but I’ve purposefully taken a more measured approach to the world of mobile live video streaming and becoming a “Digital Broadcaster”."

Principals: How to prepare your school for the Internet of Things onslaught

Principals: How to prepare your school for the Internet of Things onslaught | TechTalk | Scoop.it

The Internet of Things basically refers to any so-called “smart” object that uses an internet connection to enhance functionality. Today there are watches, forks, thermostats, and any number of other related devices that students or school campuses may be bringing to a network near you.

Planning for this next evolution of networking needs to simultaneously be defensive (ensuring that IT infrastructure is ready) and offensive (encouraging and leading groups outside of the IT department such as teachers and students to take full advantage of the promise of the IoT.)

According to Gartner [2], we’ve entered the “Wild West” era in IoT adoption. With that in mind, here is a quick checklist for preparing your school or district.

Eileen Otero's curator insight, July 29, 2015 10:11 PM

With the multitude of new devices sprouting every day it is critical to have a solid infrastructure that will support multiple devices interconnected. Crucial if you want to fully develop the STEM Program in your  school.

Jim Mallams's curator insight, August 2, 2015 11:24 AM

Getting geared up for greater use of wi-fi within schools also has the added risk of a greater quantity of "things" wishing to connect to the same system.  Forward thinking and greater understanding will need to be adopted within schools to avoid an onslaught of problems associated with a lack of capacity.
