Timing is key in the proper wiring of the brain, Yale researchers find

Timing is key in the proper wiring of the brain, Yale researchers find | SynBioFromLeukipposInstitute | Scoop.it

"...Yale researchers tried to interfere with this spontaneous activity in neonatal mice through a technique called optogenetics – or the manipulation of brain cells genetically engineered to be activated by light. The Yale team showed that proper wiring of connections between the eye and brain depended upon exactly when this spontaneous activity occurs. When the researchers simultaneously induced retinal activity in both eyes of a neonatal mouse, they found the visual connections did not develop properly. However, when they induced activity first in one eye and then the other, neural connections were unaffected or even enhanced...."

Broader Perspective: Programmable RNA and other recent advances in synthetic biology

Broader Perspective: Programmable RNA and other recent advances in synthetic biology | SynBioFromLeukipposInstitute | Scoop.it

"There were 50-100 attendees at the Cell Press-sponsored Synthetic Biology conference at the University of California, San Francisco held on December 14, 2011. There was the usual acknowledgment of the field’s status (early-stage), potential impact (considerable), and articulation of what is needed (easy-to-use tools, reliable at-scale design and manufacturing processes, and standardized interoperable parts libraries) that has been typical at group gatherings (e.g.; SB 5.0) for the last few years. Also the point about a better marketing approach to attract scientists and public support to the field, something more enticing than the admittedly deadpan…"

"Genetic Programming

Our goal is to create a programming language for living cells that is similar to languages used to program computers and robots. This requires the development of a high-level language that allows a programmer to describe a desired function and computational methods that convert this language into a linear DNA sequence. The sequence is then built and inserted into an organism, which runs the program. Examples of programs built by the SBC include an edge detection program that gives bacteria to identify the light-dark interfaces in an image, a program that forms two-dimensional patters, and one that enables bacteria to count...."

The technical side of cell factories « Synth in Tune

The technical side of cell factories « Synth in Tune | SynBioFromLeukipposInstitute | Scoop.it

"Cell factories are envisioned as future workhorse manufacturers of pharmaceuticals, biofuels and biomaterials. Two main engines work in coordination inside cell factory’s machinery: gene regulatory networks and biochemical pathways. Both networks are amenable to an engineering approach for their modeling, design and validation. Therefore, off-the-shelf implementations of these bioengineering appliances are becoming more widespread with the advent of rational synthetic biology. Take for instance a cell factory for the synthesis of natural products or secondary metabolites..."

Proteins are first, structurally speaking « Synth in Tune

Proteins are first, structurally speaking « Synth in Tune | SynBioFromLeukipposInstitute | Scoop.it

"Structure has always been the next frontier. Computational biologists tend to talk about the twilight zone to speak about this region of the sequence space of proteins where molecular structures are still vaguely known and susceptible of further refinement. A realm of sequences where, as in Plato’s Cave, appearances are deceiving and inference by homology needs necessarily to be ruled out...."
