Apple To Announce Tools, Platform To ‘Digitally Destroy’ Textbook Publishing

Apple To Announce Tools, Platform To ‘Digitally Destroy’ Textbook Publishing | SynBioFromLeukipposInstitute | Scoop.it

Apples new App for publishing means:
This will education and learning mix up totally. We have to see this in line with open courses from e.g. MIT and Stanford. - This will change the way we learn. Free textbooks with enriched content and social interactions. You read and learn on your iPad, smart phone or air book - every where. You can use social networks to discuss and understand the content. You can even add content post publication. You can review the content together with your friends and modify and correct the textbook. With the "garage band" app for textbook writing and publishing it will be extremely easy to self publish! The scientific textbook will become dynamic. The same what will happen to the scientific paper. - All together a major game change in the publishing industry. The publishing houses will die! Self publishing will be the standard. The web page or the blog page of the author will be the center. This means the end of the scientific journal. The end of Nature, Cell; Science at least in their traditional form. A major game change from Apple like they did for the music industry! It will be amazing to watch the presentation on Thursday. I am really looking forward to it. The new age of learning and publishing starts on Thursday!

Molecularist

Molecularist | SynBioFromLeukipposInstitute | Scoop.it

The quest for the $500 home molecular biology laboratory >> Medical Laboratory Observer December 2011
“Molecular diagnostics and molecular biology in general are becoming more pervasive every day in a range of applications but are still seen by many as being an arcane science. Many undergraduate science curricula cover only the basics of theoretical components without exposure to laboratory practice, due to perceived cost and complexity of laboratory facilities needed. With this in mind, I recently set out on a quest to see whether a non-specialist, $500 complete molecular biology laboratory was possible.”

Meet George Church, founder of the Personal Genome Project. GENOME....

A great project, if all sequence data get in the hands of the patient. No doctor, government, employer, insurance company should have any right to get insight. The patient should decide, who should get what. Moreover, even the analysis should be put in the patients hands.

How Could Twitter Influence Science (And Why Scientists Are on Board) - Forbes

How Could Twitter Influence Science (And Why Scientists Are on Board) - Forbes | SynBioFromLeukipposInstitute | Scoop.it

"After some discussion here on Forbes about the validity of “influence” in social media, news that Twitter has a significant impact on scientific citations is something of a surprise. But could it be?.....The bottom line is simple: articles that many people tweeted about were 11 times more likely to be highly cited than those who few people tweeted about. Its implications are even more interesting. It generally takes months and years for papers to be cited by other scientific publications. Thus, on the day an article comes out, it would seem to be difficult to tell whether it will have a real impact on a given field. However, because the majority of tweets about journal articles occur within the first two days of publication, we now have an early signal about which research is likely to be significant. "
