What are some of the best reasons for looking at your supply chain through a sustainability lens? (hint: They may not be what you think)
Ask business leaders why their organizations are pursuing sustainability and you are likely to hear the same reasons over and over. It’s good for the environment. It’s good for our corporate image. It’s the responsible thing to do. These are important reasons, to be sure. But are they among the best reasons?

Sean suggests "the supply chain disconnect from CSR will not last long" and that with a "renewed focus on CSR, supplier performance and risk management" organizations are preparing themselves to reorient their supplier management processes, putting data-driven approaches first. I agree with Sean that "the only way to achieve a strong supplier information management program is to directly align existing suppliers with the company's corporate goals" which can then be incorporated into specific monitoring programs and tools and measured through a set of KPIs.

As we approach the mid-point in 2011, the tea leaves of the economic recovery have ‘sustainability’ in supply chain planning and management firming up as a key “rebuilding” block in company activities. Two recent studies from two different continents bear that notion out.

Today, Levi Strauss & Co. (LS&Co.) announced new Terms of Engagement for its global supply chain that the company says will go beyond mere “do no harm” compliance to actually improve the lives of workers in factories around the world. Under the new approach, LS&Co. will require contract factories to support programs for their workers that align with UN Millennium Development goals.

One of the most striking things I first came across when looking through this research was how sustainable procurement has moved up the agenda of purchasing executives over the past few years. In 2003, 40% of respondents to a survey of procurement directors stated that sustainable procurement was an important/critical priority while in 2009 this had risen to an astonishing 90%.

Energy-related carbon-dioxide (CO2) emissions in 2010 were the highest in history, according to the latest estimates by the International Energy Agency (IEA).
After a dip in 2009 caused by the global financial crisis, emissions are estimated to have climbed to a record 30.6 Gigatonnes (Gt), a 5% jump from the previous record year in 2008, when levels reached 29.3 Gt.
In addition, the IEA has estimated that 80% of projected emissions from the power sector in 2020 are already locked in, as they will come from power plants that are currently in place or under construction today.

Emerging research demonstrates that local, independently owned businesses generate more than three times the return to our local economy than do national chain stores. In fact, several studies have shown that when you buy from an independent, locally owned business, rather than nationally owned businesses, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and farms -- continuing to strengthen the economic base of the community. As mentioned in our eco friendly consulting, consider:
