America’s Supply Chain Resilience: Why President Biden’s Executive Order Falls Short

America’s Supply Chain Resilience: Why President Biden’s Executive Order Falls Short | EcoVadis in the Press - Articles and bylines | Scoop.it

The COVID-19 crisis has demonstrated the importance of building sustainable and resilient global supply chains, and world leaders are taking action. In the United States, for example, President Biden has signed an executive order to create more resilient and secure supply chains, starting with a 100-day review. This will assess vulnerabilities and ensure greater domestic production, built-in redundancies, adequate stockpiles, safe and secure digital networks, and a world-class American manufacturing base and workforce.

Podcast | Have Supply Chains Forgotten About Sustainability?

Podcast | Have Supply Chains Forgotten About Sustainability?  | EcoVadis in the Press - Articles and bylines | Scoop.it

One might expect companies hit by the recession to hunker down and focus exclusively on survival. Which would mean, temporarily at least, a retreat from efforts to create truly sustainable and socially aware supply chains. That was at least partly the case in the recession of 2007-2008, but it isn’t necessarily so this time around. So says Pierre-François Thaler, chief executive officer and co-founder of Ecovadis, a sustainability rating platform. He says companies remain dedicated to addressing issues of global climate, biodiversity and rising inequality. But are recent reductions in carbon emissions the result of those efforts, or can they be chalked up to a plunge in economic activity caused by the coronavirus pandemic? And are ambitious goals for cutting emissions in the years ahead really achievable? Hosted by Bob Bowman, Editor-in-Chief of SupplyChainBrain.

Sustainability at Bayer: Getting from the pledge to action

Sustainability at Bayer: Getting from the pledge to action | EcoVadis in the Press - Articles and bylines | Scoop.it
“When it comes to our immediate supply chain of 60,000+ suppliers,” says Thomas, “we have a typical segmentation process that looks at risk profiles, business impact and the nature of the relationship. We use those to promote transparency and drive engagement. We agree and communicate that if a supplier wants to become or remain strategic, and be treated preferentially — and lets use the analogy of gathering air miles for that — they have to show leadership and sustainable practices, which for us means a minimum evaluation of 45 by EcoVadis. Without this, a supplier loses its air miles and becomes transactional, with less access to opportunities. It means for both parties that sustainability is being taken very seriously.

2021 Procurement and Supply Chain Predictions from the market — EcoVadis and Ivalua

2021 Procurement and Supply Chain Predictions from the market — EcoVadis and Ivalua | EcoVadis in the Press - Articles and bylines | Scoop.it
Redefined resiliency will shift sustainability approaches from just-in-time to just-in-case
Throughout the coming year, we’ll see many interesting shifts in the supply chain — from blockchain losing its luster, to a heightened focus on human rights and workforce diversity at the brand and supplier level. One of the most critical changes we’ll see is that organizations will prioritize Scope 3 (value chain) emissions reductions to drive lasting climate action and avoid future costs more than ever. This is a result of the increase of corporate and social initiatives, new regulations, and more companies realizing that making a tangible impact requires reduced emissions across the value chain.

We’ll also begin to see how redefined resiliency following COVID-19 will shift sustainability approaches from just-in-time to just-in-case. In 2021, more organizations will discover that supplier diversification and near-shoring don’t address the core of the issue. Real resilience requires organizations to revamp their sustainability management programs with a focus on supplier relationships, continuous improvement and long-term performance. Next year will be an exciting year of growth and innovation as we continue to move toward a more responsible supply chain, and we’re looking forward to helping companies get on board.

Will this be the decade of supply chain sustainability?

Will this be the decade of supply chain sustainability? | EcoVadis in the Press - Articles and bylines | Scoop.it
One of the most significant shifts we’ve seen since the start of this century is the rising importance of sustainability for businesses—particularly around environmental, social, and ethical performance. Increasing awareness of the catastrophic effects of climate change and the destruction of natural resources as well as a growing concern for human rights violations, inhumane working conditions, corruption, and more are driving companies to incorporate sustainability into their values and their mission statements.

Business and Governments and Civil Society and a Healthy Planet

Business and Governments and Civil Society and a Healthy Planet | EcoVadis in the Press - Articles and bylines | Scoop.it
Sylvain Guyoton (SG) – Even if the diagnosis is clear and daunting, we need to stress that we may actually have reached a positive inflexion point. In August 2019, 180 of the top US CEOs who are members of the Business Roundtable declared that shareholders interest cannot be the sole purpose of a corporation. They agreed that investing in people, protecting the environment, and being fair with suppliers necessitates commitment. Furthermore, the Financial Times recently asked the question, “Does capitalism need saving from itself?” And the Dean of INSEAD, Ilian Mihov, stated that “it’s time to rethink capitalism” otherwise we will be facing enormous challenges. According to John Elkington’s new book, Green Swans, a profound market shift may be emerging. Even though we are still very much at the stage where principles are proclaimed and there are lots of unknowns, in a few years we may look back at today and say that this was the year something started to move in the right direction.

Suppliers and Supply Chains

Suppliers and Supply Chains | EcoVadis in the Press - Articles and bylines | Scoop.it
Most construction companies have multiple suppliers for equipment, material, and consumables both on the job and in the office. The supply chains that feed material to those suppliers are usually not thought of by the consumer. If the supplier has what you need, you don’t particularly care where it came from or how it got there. But the COVID-19 pandemic has laid bare the fragile nature of many supply chains and what can happen to them in the future.

According to EcoVadis, a provider of business sustainability ratings, 80% of suppliers lack supply chain due diligence measures, 57% aren’t monitoring working conditions, and 44% lack health and safety preparedness. The report includes insights from global supply chain ratings with analysis on the sustainability scores of more than 40,000 companies assessed from 2015 through 2019.

Perspectives on a Monumental Week for Global Sustainability Efforts

Perspectives on a Monumental Week for Global Sustainability Efforts | EcoVadis in the Press - Articles and bylines | Scoop.it

At the EcoVadis Sustain 2021 Conference held in March, senior supply chain executives and various speakers spoke of the opportunity of “building back better” in the new normal of business.  Speakers talked about rethinking of existing supply network strategies that place equal weighting on lowest cost along with that of carbon reduction. In a recent interview this Editor had with Pierre-Francios Thaler, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of EcoVadis after this conference, he reinforced that the tipping-point of more climate action was already occurring over the past 12-18 months. His prediction was that supply chain executive leaders will indeed have to take on a higher leadership profile role regarding CSR objectives and working plans. Thaler also mentioned the more active attention that equity investment firms currently have on the sustainably ratings of individual companies and industries.

“It sits across several departments on the client side, including treasury, procurement and accounting, and they all need to share the same objectives, which is not always the case at the start of discussions. And then the suppliers have to be onboarded,” he says.

“When you add a sustainability dimension, you are further complicating the picture. You have to define sustainability objectives for the suppliers that are meaningful, that you can explain and that will align with the objectives of the buyer over the medium to long term.”

New Year, New Administration – What’s Next for our Nation’s Supply Chains

New Year, New Administration – What’s Next for our Nation’s Supply Chains | EcoVadis in the Press - Articles and bylines | Scoop.it
“Our return to the Paris agreements will mean faster adoption of ESG standards and metrics for supply chains in order to comply with emerging regulations that require total disclosure and reporting,” says Vashistha. “Investments will be made in order to monitor sustainability risks of third parties – such as labor violations, employee discrimination or carbon emission non-compliance – to detect threats before they lead to major disruption. An additional driving factor will be reputation. Companies will want to be recognized as good stewards of the environment and engage and inform their customer base.”

When it comes to the supply chain overall, Biden's presidency is expected to lead to the return of a stronger "Visible Hand," according to Sylvain Guyoton, senior V-P of research at EcoVadis.

As we head into a new year in the wake of massive disruptions, here are three major trends projected to ensure continuity and resiliency throughout 2021 and beyond.

Navigating Supply Chain Complexities With Sustainability

Navigating Supply Chain Complexities With Sustainability | EcoVadis in the Press - Articles and bylines | Scoop.it
This year has proven complex for organizations and their supply chains as they adapt to an ever-changing landscape filled with new risks and volatilities.

Forward-thinking leaders are turning to sustainability as the solution for building long-term resiliency and ROI. The recently released EcoVadis Business Sustainability Risk & Performance Index shows there is additional work to be done in the journey toward more sustainable business.

Shining the Spotlight on Sustainable Procurement
The index provides the most comprehensive view on the sustainability performance of supply chains around the world. It analyzes data from 65,000 assessments of more than 40,000 companies across nine industry sectors, five geographic regions and four assessment themes: environment, labor and human rights, ethics and sustainable procurement (which goes beyond a company’s own performance to measure how well they are addressing key sustainability issues within their supply chain).

Over the last five years, all theme scores have increased by at least 9%, except for sustainable procurement. In fact, sustainable procurement falls at the opposite end of the spectrum, increasing only 1% since 2015 and decreasing slightly since last year’s report.

Volvo on Survey: "EV adoption depends on fiscality, infrastructure and perception"

Looking at the selection criteria for OEMs, pricing is still in the top spot, before topics like safety and sustainability. Do you think the pandemic will strengthen the focus on pricing or will it give criteria around safety and sustainability more importance?

"There was an understandable movement by some companies to further reduce their costs to help weather the COVID-19 cashflow storm. However, most organisations continue to balance TCO along with their wider corporate objectives. For example, we find our high score in the Ecovadis independent CSR evaluation is given an increasingly high weighting by companies, along with the wider “fit for purpose” attributes behind our cars, together with the Volvo Cars brand promise supporting their own environmental and employee duty of care targets."

In the Pandemic, Factories’ Commitment to Human Rights Is Slipping | SupplyChainBrain

In the Pandemic, Factories’ Commitment to Human Rights Is Slipping | SupplyChainBrain | EcoVadis in the Press - Articles and bylines | Scoop.it
The global scope of the pandemic, unforeseen by sustainability advocates less than a year ago, suggests that they need to tweak their model to get a true picture of compliance in times of crisis. EcoVadis has yet to alter its criteria for health and safety, “but we are thinking of adding new actions,” says vice president of research Sylvain Guyoton. That could mean a location-by-location assessment of risk with respect to requirements that have become all too familiar in recent months, such as frequent health checkups of workers and the availability of personal protective equipment (PPE). Even those obvious measures have been ignored by many of the companies highlighted in the latest EcoVadis survey.

An unexpected risk of COVID-19: Canceled supplier audits

An unexpected risk of COVID-19: Canceled supplier audits | EcoVadis in the Press - Articles and bylines | Scoop.it
This is a contributed op-ed written by Sylvain Guyoton, senior vice president of research at EcoVadis, a supply chain sustainability solutions firm. Opinions are the author's own.

As society continues to adjust to the strange new world brought on by COVID-19, we need to react in a way that prioritizes the health and well-being of people and society while ensuring business continuity. Maximizing supplier visibility and health while trying to mitigate disruptions is key for success. This highlights a new challenge as ongoing travel restrictions and quarantines are requiring many companies to cancel on-site supplier audits, inhibiting progress and increasing risk exposure.
