Opinion: Sadly, Malthus was right. Now what? | SoRo class | Scoop.it
We seem bound to learn the hard way that there really is a limit to how many people the Earth can support.
Ivan Ius's curator insight, February 26, 2016 8:23 AM

Well stated!

From Seth Dixon - His insight:

The ideas of Thomas Malthus have always loomed large; the scope includes some of the biggest issues facing humanity's continued existence on this planet.  His controversial ideas have been debated for centuries and the way we frame the debate is oftentimes in terms that are derived from Malthusian ideas (for example the terms overpopulation, carrying capacity, and sustainability).  This op-ed written by the President of the Canada's Population institute provides a way to get student to assess the strengths of an argument and to identify the bias/perspective of the author.

Questions to Ponder: What did Malthus get right?  What did he get wrong?

It is a phenomenal view and to experience it first hand rather than through pictures would be awesome.  However, for safety of both the person and the artifact this is illegal.  Should this mans actions be applauded for bravery or penalized for breaking the law?

Even in the Middle Ages, People Didn’t Think the Earth Was Flat

Even in the Middle Ages, People Didn’t Think the Earth Was Flat | SoRo class | Scoop.it

Ironically, the flat-earth myth has historically been used to demonize religion and to lionize scientists.

Via Joy Kinley
Joy Kinley's curator insight, January 29, 2016 11:22 AM

Sailors and mathematicians knew for years that the Earth was round - the flat Earth thought was just a way for people to make the past sound inferior and the Columbus to sound even more innovative and important.

Flint, Michigan has made the news with the problems that they have had with lead in the water.  Almost any older building or furniture was at one time painted with lead paint and as that flakes off it can cause developmental problems.

President's Day

President's Day | SoRo class | Scoop.it

"The study of geography is about more than just memorizing places on a map. It's about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exists across continents. And in the end, it's about using all that knowledge to help bridge divides and bring people together."

-President Barack Obama

Pierre Mongin 's curator insight, February 28, 2016 2:25 AM

L'Étude de la géographie sert à comprendre la complexité du monde et s'appuie sur les cartes y inclus mentales pour voir la globalité .

Niall Conway's curator insight, March 16, 2016 1:41 PM

Thanks to the NCGE for reminding me of this great quote.  In 2012 President Obama participated in National Geographic Bee to to "celebrate the important role that geography plays in all our lives."  If you want the video of President Obama saying this quote, click here.

Normally we think of ancient civilizations beginning along great river valleys this one occurs at a high altitude.  This is a civilization that is not mentioned in most world history textbooks and the religion or belief system is different than what we normally associate with the region.

There's No Such Thing as a ’Language’

There's No Such Thing as a ’Language’ | SoRo class | Scoop.it

The realities of speech are much more complicated than the words used to describe it.

Via Joy Kinley
Joy Kinley's curator insight, January 29, 2016 10:53 AM

I hadn't considered what was the difference between a dialect and a language.  I knew that some languages were easy for people to speak and understand but hadn't thought that they were probably just different dialects.

There are no clear cut rules on what makes a language - does it need to be written, have a country of origin, etc.  Do we need to understand these difference or just accept that some languages are merely dialect and some dialects are actually different languages?

Pope Francis, Russian Orthodox patriarch to meet in Cuba

Pope Francis, Russian Orthodox patriarch to meet in Cuba | SoRo class | Scoop.it

"After a split of more than 1,000 years, the persecution of Christian by extremists in the Middle East and Africa have brought the two churches closer."

Pope Francis and the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church will meet in Cuba next week in a first-ever encounter between the heads of the Catholic and Russian Orthodox churches since the Great Schism of 1054.

Tags: religion, Christianity.

Megan Mattei GIS's curator insight, February 7, 2016 11:41 AM

This meeting is very monumental for the Christian faith and all its sectors because the two heads of each faith have not met in 962 years. Hopefully this meeting will only bring positive outcomes especially for the Christians being persecuted in the Middle East. It will be interesting to see if the two leaders continue to meet and make actions towards peace in the Middle East together. If the people of both faiths truly believe and carry out what their faith teaches, there will not be any problems with this meeting or continued action among the Christian faiths.
