Five months after going public in one of the most controversial IPOs in U.S. history, social networking titan Facebook finally delivered some good news on Tuesday, reporting earnings results that impressed Wall Street.
Marty Note This article is mostly about stock performance, but hidden in there is the real good news. Facebook is getting its mobile grove on. I love this quote:
"Mobile revenue is rapidly becoming the holy grail of consumer Internet companies. That’s because the industry is undergoing a profound and massive structural shift thanks to the explosive growth of sophisticated smartphones like Apple's iPhone and Google’s Android devices. Simply put, users are increasingly accessing the Internet on mobile devices, and there is a general consensus in the industry that the locus of computing is shifting away from the desktop and toward smartphones and tablets."
Me thinks you have a gift for understatement there TIME (lol). This quote doesn't go near far enough and speaks to the greatest mobile myth. There is an erroneous belief that mobile is a B2C thing, a thing that only impacts "consumer Internet companies". Yeah, not so much.
Mobile impacts everything. Mobile changes everything. It is unfortunate that mobile is also associated with phones because there is another more important mobile. Mobile changes content delivery, content organization, content structure. Mobile changes everything for Facebook and everyone else.
Glad to hear Facebook has its groove back, now actually doing something cool and great would be good.
Content curation is one of the driving factors for generating leads in content marketing. More and more brands are choosing to pursue content marketing for that very reason. A recent study by BtoB Magazine concludes that 28% of content marketers focus on content marketing simply to boost lead generation. This is conceivable as content marketing drives three times the sales of digital advertising (Nielson). Leads generated from marketing spend passes leads in paid search after nineteen months (Heidi Cohen) Furthermore, “content marketing leads generated per $1,000 of marketing spend is three times greater after three years (or thirty-six months),” writes Cohen. If that isn’t convincing enough, both Kapost and Eloqua found that content marketing’s cost per lead drops 80% after the first five months....
Marty Note Content Marketing, unlike every other marketing I can think of, can get better with age because more people find your content, link to your content and keep its value increasing even as the costs of creating it stat static. Content maintenance costs are minimal, so as content ages its margin can really open up.

Peg Fitzpatrick plugs into some great resources for Google+ with Five Fantastic Ways to Get Google+tastic.
Marty Note Google Plus still gets no respect despite scaling faster than Facebook and having an impressively creative approach to the social network. Hangouts are powerful and bound to become common once we understand them better. Oh, BTW it is GOOGLE.

Social Media Marketing Podcast 010: In this episode John Jantsch shares insights into how growing a community can help your business. John explains how building a loyal community can make or break your business. People are drawn to you over time if you provide good, valuable and authentic information. Listen to the show to hear the example John shares of a woman who created a community before starting a business. What is community? John shares how we have always had community. The concept of community is based on how people gather around shared interests or location to give and take mutually. This has not always applied to business. A lot of the communities in place today have grown through social media. These tools not only allow communities to connect face to face, but also to connect much faster on deeper levels. Social media allows people to gather regardless of geography into a community of shared ideas.

Marty Note From the life is serendipity department. I am writing about CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) today when a note comes across my prep school's Facebook page about Catapult, a new crowdfunding platform for girls and women created by Rob Kilgore (Choate '76).
The platform is WELL DONE and overdue. Give Rob feedback and let's make sure this much needed new venture succeeds.
How social context is playing a role in SEO and how marketers can adjust their strategies to match the changing character of search.
"More and more, search engines have begun to incorporate social context into their search results. And it's high time we dive into what role social context is playing in SEO, and how marketers can adjust their strategies to match the changing character of search. So without further ado, let's get into the nitty gritty of what's being called "social search" and learn how it affects marketers.
"Social search" is an evolving term for the way in which search engines factor a user's social network -- also referred to as social graph -- into how results are displayed after a search query. In social search, content that has a social connection to you in some way is prioritized. A social connection could mean someone you are linked to via Facebook, Twitter, or any other major social network. Alternately, some forms of social search prioritize content that has been shared by social media influencers, even if those experts aren't directly tied to you".

Two months ago, Facebook shut down The Cool Hunter's Facebook Page. Founder Bill Tikos this week posted about what happened (a submission for which hit the Hacker News frontpage), and ...
Marty Note If you build a business on OPP (Other People's Platforms) without some backup moving traffic to owned media you are nuts and subject to the kind of pain described here. This should be a cautionary tale for any company to beware the FB. FB cares about FB NOT YOU.

Social Media - Engaging your customers online requires more than just being on the same social networks they are on. You first need to determine what your goals are for social media, how ...
Marty Note I'm all for planning, but remember to plan in a certain amount of "Will respond" time in any social media camapign. Social is a conversation. I know you've heard that idea over and over, but its practical expression is to build in response time to any social plan. Don't just lecture, listen too.

How can brands collect customer information without infiringing on privacy? Simple – just ask, says Steve Richards.
Marty Note The concept of "Social CRM" or Social Customer Relationship Management is beyond important. Soon customers will EXPECT you know them beyond their buying patterns on your website. If you know Martin Smith = @ScentTrail (http://www.twitter.com/scenttrail), know my blog (http://scenttrail.blogspot.com), my Facebook posts (http://www.facebook.com/martin.marty.smith ) and my Scoops (http://www.scoop.it/u/martin-marty-smith ) your ability to create a relationship goes sky high.
There is little excuse for B2B sites to not include social personas in their CRM. I suggest another level. B2B retailers should create personas and profile their segments in several dimensions including:
* Offer Bait (what offer will appeal to X, Y and Z personas). * Language (what keywords attract what personas and why). * Extrinsic and Intrinsic motivations (read DRIVE by Pink). * Archetypes & Hero's Journey (what triggers does each persona/segment have?)
The last bullet is notable. If you understand that Bob is a thirty something, truck driving man who works with his hands in construction, is married and listens to Bruce Springsteen (via Facebook) and talks mostly about his Bronco restoration on Facebook and forums you may be can attach a hero archetype such as a Bass Masters winner or Nascar driver.
Imagine Bob visiting your Bronco parts site and his page picks up pieces of his social profile including a quote from a winning NASCAR driver saying how much he likes ABC Bronco parts. This page would look different for my boss, Atlantic BT founder Jon Jordan, who also restores Broncos. Jon's page might have a quote from Bob!
I saw a quote today that advertising, when done right, is not checkers but chess. I agree and social is even more of a chess game. I'm intrigued enough by this idea of social as chess to work it down in more detail over the weekend. Look for an article on ScentTrail Marketing soon (http://scentTrail.blogspot.com ).

Twitter rolled out on Tuesday a series of design updates aimed to add more personality to member pages. Photos have been brought to the forefront and room has been made for Facebook Timeline-like cover images.
Twitter CEO Dick Costolo first unveiled the updates during morning news program The Today Show — an unlikely stage for a tech company that is continually introducing new features and designs. Since the announcement was coupled with a short segment about Twitter’s growth and success, it was likely part of an effort to introduce the platform to a greater audience not yet using the site.
Member profile photos have been moved from the top left to a spot in the center of the page. Users can upload a long horizontal “header” image that resembles the cover photo concept currently used on Facebook and Google+. Existing profile pictures are embedded in the center of the header.

Marty Note If you didn't catch Zuckerberg's 60 Minutes interview where he stated his desire to have Facebook become Internet infrastructure watch it sometime. Facebook is making an old play. Miners didn't make the money in the Gold Rush, but the Sears and Roebucks of the times did just find thank you. Miners are content and Sears is infrastructure in this example :).
With Facebook's domination of the "create an account" with Facebook option they take one step closer to Zuckerberg's stated intent. Nice if they could sell some shovels and axes too, but can't have everything.

Marty Note Interesting article here about how agencies are reorganizing their work to incorporate social. I can relate to the partner vs. full service agency debate as I live it daily. The most important message is work has to be deconstructed and then put back together in more efficient ways, more fun ways too.

Marketers aren't posting enough on Facebook on the weekends and at night, according to a new report from Buddy Media.
If you’re looking to take a day off from posting on Facebook, choose Wednesday, but don’t rest on Sunday or you’ll miss the best opportunity of the week. That’s the advice from Buddy Media‘s “Strategies for Effective Wall Posts: A Timeline Analysis,” a report based on activity from 1,800 of the world’s biggest brand pages from April 1 to May 31.
As with previous Buddy Media reports on the subject, the analysis found that marketers are still posting too little on weekends and at night and when they do post, they’re way too verbose.

Minimalism. The term is pretty divisive. Some think it's a bunch of self-serving nonsense - a fancy label for a convoluted lifestyle design.
Marty Note The bone I pick with this article is half of the benefits are NOT true to my experience of creating more with less across hundreds of sites and some ecommerce websites that produced millions over years. Creating clean, simple designs HARDER and it takes MORE not less time to create balance, clear, clean lines and the quiet grace that is minimalist design beauty.
