Ease-of-use is emerging as the critical factor for the uptake of telehealth consulting in Australia. A six-month trial implementation of telehealth at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne has been declared a success, with more than 150 patients seen and countless hours saved for families and clinicians.
We're still several decades away from developing completely immersive computer simulations, but it's not too early to dream about the ways we'll be able to use them. KF: The current and future possibilities that are already on the horizon are diverse and this presents a huge challenge for Health Education to idenify the most effective forms of simulation and immersion for ensuring high quality learnign experiences.

UChoose is an online application for authoring and delivering computer simulations of real-life scenarios, decision paths and maze-like activities for the purpose of training, education, and assessment.
While the original purpose of the system was to support the creation and delivery of Virtual Patient Scenarios based upon and driven by the Medbiquitous Virtual Patient standard this has been broadened out to any interactive case based scenario.

Revolutionize your ability to grow and develop simulation-based training programs with quality education and tools for users of all levels and backgrounds... KF: Check the blog posts and "stories" section to see some interesting examples of how this system can be implemented in a health education/training setting.
In higher education, we’ve been talking about “e-learning” for years. "The future of today’s universities probably lies between the “massification” of online education – in which thousands or millions more students can learn the basic and common courses on an online adaptive system – and small tutorial sessions, utilising the benefits of face to face teaching. From such “disruption” the best education will emerge if we manage to marry the interactive, intelligent and immersive possibilities of virtual worlds and instant digital communications tools with the talents and passion of great teachers." KF: There are special implications for a range of disciplines - health sciences, performing arts, spatial sciences, etc where the experience of different physical realities has to play an important role in learning. The use of MUVEs, augmented reality and virtual reality is yet to be realised broadly in many of these areas. There will be a necessary development of thinking around how to utilise these technologies.

Makers of virtual learning environments to address real world challenges... We have experience designing and facilitating successful training sessions, learning games and preparedness exercises for hospitals, universities, first responders in Virtual Learning Environments. Stakeholder meetings via facilitated web conferencing applications and Team Trainings for geographically dispersed participants in 3-D Virtual Environments are less costly, less risky and more engaging. They increase opportunities for collaborative learning, for diagnosing live exercise plans, and for allowing geographically dispersed stakeholders to participate in a common setting.

Play2Train™ is a 3D virtual place where geographically separated learners, subject matter experts and content builders meet as avatars to create collaboratively immersive learning experiences for the health care, emergency preparedness and educational services industry. Our mission is to lower barriers for access to 3D virtual learning environments. Please note our research, development and implementation team has moved on and founded a new company DeepSemaphore LLC (http://www.deepsemaphore.com/) which will continue our efforts in developing new Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) to address real world challenges. We encourage visitors to check out the DeepSemaphore LLC site where our new journey begins. Any information included here is only for historical reasons.

The HPSN2012 Wrap Up EXPERIENCE SIMULATION TO THE FULLEST. REAL TIME. REAL STUDENTS. LIVE ACTION. Every year, for the last 16 years, a spectacular group of people from all over the world and from every level of healthcare come together to exchange ideas on how to push the envelope of medical simulation to improve learning, competency and ultimately, save lives. At HPSN2012, we had over 1,000 medical simulation experts join us for three action-packed days of learning with speakers, training courses, hands-on sessions and fun, not to mention the Poster session, METI Cup at HPSN and The 2nd Annual METI Awards. It was by far our most ambitious, well attended and successfull HPSN to date. Thanks to all our attendees and for those who were not able to attend...we hope to see you next time at HPSN2013. KF: This page provides more links to HPSN materials but is focussed on the 2012 conference. Videos and workshop materials are available from this page.

Dave Levy (@levydr) writes: 'The more health apps have in common with other popular app trends like gamification, the easier it will be for mainstream consumers to get on board and use them more. Watching how new health apps leverage incentives is sure to be fascinating. And even though the examples [cited in the piece, namely Gympact, Stickk and RunKeeper] are all related to fitness, let’s home there are innovators out there working to crack the code that could bring game-applications to thins like physical therapy, medicine adherence and chronic condition tracking.'

The untapped potential of virtual game worlds to shed light on real world epidemics. Simulation models are of increasing importance within the field of applied epidemiology. However, very little can be done to validate such models or to tailor their use to incorporate important human behaviours. In a recent incident in the virtual world of online gaming, the accidental inclusion of a disease-like phenomenon provided an excellent example of the potential of such systems to alleviate these modelling constraints. We discuss this incident and how appropriate exploitation of these gaming systems could greatly advance the capabilities of applied simulation modelling in infectious disease research.

The UP Experience is pleased to welcome back Dr. David Eagleman, neuroscientist, best-selling author, and our beloved UP Master of Ceremonies for the fourth year in a row. Dr. Eagleman holds joint appointments in the Departments of Neuroscience and Psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine. His areas of research include time perception, vision, synesthesia, social neuroscience, and the intersection of neuroscience with the legal system. Highly regarded in his field, Dr. Eagleman travels the world to speak about his research, insights, and neuro-discoveries. He is the founder and director of Baylor College of Medicine‘s Initiative on Neuroscience and Law, and he directs the Laboratory for Perception and Action.
“Where the Leaders Discuss the Future of Serious Games” Serious Play Conference speakers include the leading thinkers, consultants, authors and analysts in the serious games industry as well as project directors already creating sims and games for education, corporate and military training, healthcare and non profits. Highlights for this year include new research on the market and growth trends for the serious games industry and presentations of the latest measurement and assessment strategiers. KF: This conference has several key speakers from the area of Healthcare. Games-based strategies can provide deeply engaging simulated contexts for learning. Well worth tracking this event.
The Information Resources Management College (iCollege) of the National Defense University established the Federal Consortium for Virtual Worlds (FCVW) in July 2007. The consortium was created to explore multi-agency and intra- agency collaboration using the robust capabilities of virtual worlds, examining best practices across multiple sectors. The objective of the consortium is to help government agencies to share resources, training, and experience; leverage outreach capabilities and practices; connect to new partners and business opportunities; and demonstrate the benefits for virtual worlds’ collaborative capabilities KF: This link provides access ot the keynotes and other presentations from this year's conference - "FCVWCON2012 Inspire the Future"- includes some Health related presentations - including, "The Future of Health Applications in Virtual Worlds: Challenges, Solutions, and Convergence"
