The Marketer Is Dead, and We Have Killed Him

The Marketer Is Dead, and We Have Killed Him | Shareables | Scoop.it
The Marketer is Dead, And We Have Killed Him. I thought about going with a less provocative title, but the purpose of this blog post is to prove that two broken assumptions exist in marketing.
Ally Greer's insight:

Great read on how marketing has changed in the era of two-way conversations with brands and digital media.

Building Products for Mass Adoption

Building Products for Mass Adoption | Shareables | Scoop.it

I think [techies vs. normals] is a perfect way to think about the world when you’re designing your product / company.  Quite honestly I see way too many company pitches that are designed for Techies but I only want to invest in products designed for Normals.

Ally Greer's insight:

Though it's a little old, this is an awesome post from one of my new favorite blogs, Both Sides of the Table.

Referencing a post frm Chris Dixon on "Techies vs. Normals," entrepreneur-turned-VC Mark Suster explains how to make a product that actually appeals to "normal" people, rather than the small demographic of early-adapters who only try out new products just to say that they tried them first.

It's easy to be distracted by the sexiness of the tech industry and to focus on building products with millions of integrations and connections - but frankly, who cares? Your tech might be awesome, but if it doesn't actually solve a problem, it isn't going to catch on. People don't have time to use things that don't solve their problems.

According to this infographic, beauty begets success. Do you agree? | Shareables | Scoop.it

Before leaping into the nitty gritty of the beauty industry, it’s important to understand why being beautiful seems so important. It runs much deeper than simple frivolous vanity. It’s more than feeling pressure to live up to media standards or cultural expectations. It turns out being beautiful really does make life better. It leads to higher earning power, finding more attractive mates, and a generally happier and healthier life.

Thomas Edison, Power-Napper: The Great Inventor on Sleep & Success

Thomas Edison, Power-Napper: The Great Inventor on Sleep & Success | Shareables | Scoop.it

"Success is the product of the severest kind of mental and physical application."

Ally Greer's insight:

A super-long but awesome read on the working and sleeping habits of Thomas Edison.

The man who claims to have never needed more than four to five hours of sleep out of the 24 hours in each day is also accused of creating the invention that caused humans to lose 1-2 hours of sleep every single night (the lightbulb). Edison hated sleep so much that he is quoted to have called those who didn't use electricity / slept during the hours of natural darkness stupid.

In the most impactful words of Edison quoted in this piece:

"I have got so much to do and life is so short, I am going to hustle."

11 Titanic References Tested Against History

One hundred and one years ago yesterday, the Titanic set sail for America. Although the ship never made it across the Atlantic, it’s an event that has been talked about, studied and made into a major motion picture.

Mental Floss takes ten aspects of the movie and compares them to what actually happened during those days.

The most surprising (and moving) fact to me is that the band actually did continue playing while the ship was sinking!

Mark Zuckerberg Might Be Right About Moore’s Law Of Sharing

Mark Zuckerberg Might Be Right About Moore’s Law Of Sharing | Shareables | Scoop.it

"Indeed, "Moore’s Law of sharing" is a topic that Zuckerberg has broached before, but it’s fascinating to consider the idea within the context of the last year of technology. One field could be the influence ofwearables, the discrete devices like Fuelbands orMemotos. Through omnipresent sensor data, the information available for us to share could provide the sort of exponential growth needed to prove Zuckerberg’s prognostication correct. But with all that extra sharing would come a counterbalancing trend that would allow us to actually live our shared lives: Sharing would naturally become more passive in nature.

Such would be a fundamental shift in how we use platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. They’d evolve to be less editorialized, as decisions to share or not to share would be driven, not by our own taste, but by our customized algorithms. And a word of warning: My algorithmloves sharing photos of my cat and things I ate for dinner."

Ally Greer's insight:

A very interesting read on how the future of sharing has and will probably continue to grow exponentially (hence Facebook jumping in and taking control.)

Will there reach a point where it stops growing? Or will we eventually lead completely shared public lives?

How to Stop Jargon From Pulling the Plug Out of Your Powerful Content

How to Stop Jargon From Pulling the Plug Out of Your Powerful Content | Shareables | Scoop.it

You can't create clear, powerful content on a foundation of jargon.

Ally Greer's insight:

No matter what industry you're working in, chances are there are lots of buzzwords consistently floating around. Social media and the Tech/Startup industries in particular are infamous for complicating every blogpost, business pitch, and general conversation with nonsense jargon.

Though using these types of words can give the impression of being knowledgeable and intelligent, when it really comes down to it, the audience eventually sees right through it.

This post references some implications of overusing jargon, including appearing as though you have nothing new to say, playing it "too safe." and making things up.

Yet, the burning question remains: how do we stop ourselves?

  • Channel your inner Warren Buffet: use plain English.
  • Go cold turkey: don't use jargon anywhere at all.
  • Use real examples.
  • Focus on bottom-line thinking.

The concept for the underwear is interesting, but what I like even more is that the large condom brand, Durex, is responsible for such an innovation. Supporting safe sex as something fun instead of something to do because there are scary things out there is a way better marketing strategy IMO.
