"There is no answer to The Struggle, but here are some things that helped me." -Ben Horowitz
Being an entrepreneur is not an easy task. There may be good times, but there are probably going to be way more bad times.
"But you knew the job was dangerous when you took it. Everybody makes mistakes. Every CEO makes thousands of mistakes. Evaluating yourself and giving yourself an “F” doesn’t help. Remember that this is what separates the women from the girls. If you want to be great, this is the challenge. If you don’t want to be great, then you never should have started a company."
A similar philosophy could be applied to many difficult situations in life.

Does putting someone's name at the beginning of an automated email really make it more personal? Or, is it just plain creepy?

It looks like the new version of Foursquare will finally include the one thing that it is missing as a location app -- a way to find things to do in the area where you are. This could possibly eliminate the need for apps like UrbanSpoon, etc - the places where we turn when we don't know where to go next. I can't wait to see what Foursquare has up its sleeve next week!

Ads used to tell you about products. Then they made you feel good about them. Now, you're the ad.
This is a very interesting read on the shift in the goals of advertising -- informing is no longer a matter, it's all about engagement.

A few of the best lines from this article: "I have always hated ties, maybe because I’ve never seen the point. They are uncomfortable and serve no useful purpose." "At one time [a tie] probably showed that the wearer was, at the very least, able to purchase and maintain a fairly expensive piece of fabric.

"Following a jam-packed beta test and a jaw-dropping $4.2 million seed round, Ark people search is open for sign ups…at least for the next three days. Ark lets you sift through profiles on Facebook, Google, Twitter, and other services to help you find out which of your high school classmates live in New York, see which friends are single, and connect with strangers who share your interests by layering up to 30 characteristic filters.""

Facebook's IPO was obviously the single most discussed topic on Twitter today. It seems as though the public sentiment displayed on Twitter matched up well with the changes in FB's stock price.

"Over the past few years I must have heard the phrase ‘everyone is a publisher nowadays’ a thousand times or more. It’s largely accurate, due to the rise of social media, but I think we are mainly ‘curators’, as opposed to ‘publishers’." These are some great tips from Chris Lake (@lakey) on how to create (and curate) an awesome Twitter or blog feed. I'm especially intrigued by this one: *Try to avoid the obvious "I don’t tend to share Mashable links because so many other people do. There’s not much point in sounding like a broken record. Instead, I try to find eye-opening posts on niche blogs. Mine the gold."

My personal favorites are "blow bubbles with straw into your drink" at the mention of the "tech bubble" and "take 100 billion drinks" at the mention of "the 100 billion dollar question."

Over the past 8 years, millions of words have been written about Facebook, but none are quite like the very first article ever written on the social media site.

"Scroll Kit provides users with what’s basically an empty canvas on which they can place anything — text, pictures, whatever — and with one click publish it to the web. The product goes beyond most WYSIWYG web editors, allowing users to control pretty much every pixel of a page and rearrange page elements at will. While the tool proves that you don’t need to know how to code to build something beautiful, the real point is to show that even if you do know how to code, that doesn’t mean you will be able to build a great website."

Facebook is probably expecting that Instagram will cannibalize some users from its new phone app and vice versa. But it no longer matters: All of the revenue stays with Facebook, and it no longer has to figure out how to convert the 40 million people who already use and like Instagram

Here's an iPhone app for those moments when you're wondering, "Okay, I've got some free time right now — what should I do?"
This is way cooler than a tweet saying "Hey followers, what should I do right now?" because, frankly, they don't care what you do.

"Google is switching from simple keyword recognition to the identification of entities, nodes and relationships. In this world, “New York” is not simply the combination of two keywords that can be recognized. It’s understood by Google as a state in the U.S. surrounded by other states, the Atlantic Ocean and with a whole bunch of other, relevant attributes."
