Brain, Interrupted

Brain, Interrupted | Shareables | Scoop.it
Does distraction matter — do interruptions make us dumber?
Ally Greer's insight:

We live in a world of interruptions - especially those social media types like me. The thing that really struck me about the intro to this article was how the researchers identified the problem not only as interruptions to tasks, but the possibilities of interruptions occurring at any time. It's true - we always know in the back of our mind that our phone might beep, a tweet might come in, or an email might just pop up within the next 5 minutes.

The study conducted had two groups: one whose members were warned of an impending interruption, and one tho weren't. The ones who weren't warned about the interruption failed miserably. They were distracted by the interruption, and even more distracted by thinking about the next one.

Strangely, the participants who were warned of the interruption they were going to be faced with in the near future performed better at the task they were on, beacuse they were focusing more brain power on preparing for it and focusing on what they were on.

9 Qualities of Remarkable Entrepreneurs

9 Qualities of Remarkable Entrepreneurs | Shareables | Scoop.it

This article was written by Jeff Hayden for Inc. Magazine. I loved reading it, perhaps you can find yourself or people you know in his description of remarkable entrepreneurs.

"What separates the best from everyone else?

Remarkable entrepreneurs do more than make money. They are the few who possess qualities that don't appear on balance sheets but do make a significant impact on the lives of their employees, industries, and communities.

Here are nine qualities of remarkable entrepreneurs:

#1. They find happiness in the success of others

#2. They relentlessly seek new experiences

#3. They don't think work/life balance; they just think life

#4. They're incredibly empathetic

#5. They have something to prove - to themselves

#6. They ignore the 40-hour workweek hype

#7. They see money as a responsibility, not a reward

#8. They don't think they're remarkable

#9. They know that success is fleeting, but dignity and respect last forever

The Best Talent Is Bringing Out Talent in Others

The Best Talent Is Bringing Out Talent in Others | Shareables | Scoop.it

"A superior leader is a person who can bring ordinary people together to achieve extraordinary results."

Ally Greer's insight:

I really like this idea. One of the things I've been doing lately as a part of my "learning to learn" mentality is paying closer attention to the people around me. Asking questions, learning about different people's passions and skills, and connecting likeminded people and friends I know who can be a help to each other are actions that a lot of today's self-absorbed business people forget to do.

This isn't to say that being self-absorbed is a terribly bad thing, or that it's a quality that people form on purpose, but it seems like too many people today are so focused on getting to the top that they forget about the others around them who can help them.

Learning to Learn: A Series on Hacking Your Own Brain

Learning to Learn: A Series on Hacking Your Own Brain | Shareables | Scoop.it

How, then, can we find the proper education and training to become experts in these fields? Though there’s not one training program fit for everyone, there is one thing we can all do: learn how to learn.

Ally Greer's insight:

I recently decided that I'm going to change the way I think. Yep, that's right - I'm hacking my own brain.

I've been inspired by so many people in my life lately and want to learn more about the things that I'm interested in. These things include, but aren't limited to, community building, social media strategy, and entrepreneurship. There are so many people in my life - directly through personal relationships, or indirectly through blogposts and books - that know about what I want to know about, and I think it's time I started learning.

I'm going to be changing the way I absorb information, ask questions, keep track of what I hear, see, and observe - I'm going to learn to learn.

Whether this means learning how to learn or learning for the sake of learning I’m not sure. Maybe it’s both. What I do know is that both of those goals are extremely important today and I’m sure there will be great value to be found in the process.

The things I share on this page will probably have a lot to do with this journey, so bear with me as I make this small pivot. At the same time, though, brace yourself for some serious knowledge intake; get ready to learn about building a business, changing the way you think, forming relationships, and being the best person possible.

In my opinion, one of the biggest parts of learning - and one that I'm trying extremely hard to focus on - is talking to others. Even if a conversation starts out without a goal, I know there's more to be learned from conversing with other people than the majority of other methods of learning out there.

So, let's talk! Leave comments here, tweet me, or email me at ally@scoop.it.

Let's discuss academic backgrounds, individual passions and/or areas of expertise, personal learning methods, ideas, hopes, and dreams. Or, let's discuss nothing at all and see where we go from there.

Thanks for joining me on my journey!

Infographic: 19 Emotions For Which English Has No Words

Infographic: 19 Emotions For Which English Has No Words | Shareables | Scoop.it
Ally Greer's insight:

As someone who studied a second language for the better part of my life, I've always been fascinated by this phenomenon of words existing in one language and not existing in another.

Throughout my studies, I've had the most fun conversing with friends who spoke both English and French as well, because when I had a hard time finding the right word in English, I could just say it in French and it would be completely fine.

The fact that the English language tends to simplify everything by turning broad concepts into one or two short words actually takes away from the beauty and meaning  that a language has the potential of having.

Reading the descriptions of the emotions in this infographic, I can think of a time when I've felt each and every one, and am fascinated by the fact that I could never actually put a word to it.

Randy Bauer's curator insight, May 11, 2013 4:53 PM

Emotions- Positive or Negative- impact our daily lives, influence others and have an impact on our health and well-being. Building on our positive emotions develop a significant resource to how we engage with others, and how we may find meaning in our live's, beyond our own personal needs. In terms of positive psychology this adds to our health, happiness and life statisfaction.

It is interesting to see how other cultures, through their language and personal experiences, have developed words with meaning we, in our western culture, do not have words for. There is much to learn, and feel.
