This is a media curation page for the PIRatE Lab's AARR Program. We are developing practical, low cost programs to monitor resources in our coastal zone (the land near the ocean and the ocean near the land) with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs aka "drones") overhead and subtidal Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) . Enjoy!!
There are more than 440 species of sharks in the world. One highly unusual type is prowling off the coast of the big island of Hawaii; they are SHARCs, or Sensor Hosting Autonomous Remote Craft.
An RPC or UAV Controller Certificate (UAV CC) allows you - a Remote Pilot - to fly a Drone / UAV / RPA legally in Australia under a CASA UOC holder company
PIRatE Lab's insight:
This web site is ground zero for UAV pilot training and certification in Australia.
For the first time ever, hardware designed on the ground has been emailed to space to meet the needs of an astronaut. From a computer in California, Mike Chen of Made In Space and colleagues just 3D-printed a ratcheting socket wrench on the International Space Station.
We have 3-D printed keys, guns and shoes—now a research team at the University of Virginia has created a 3D printed UAV drone for the Department of Defense. In the works for three years, the aircraft, no bigger than a remote-controlled plane, can carry a 1.5-pound payload. If it crashes or needs a design tweak…
PIRatE Lab's insight:
We are in a new era when we can print our own drones.
CI's unmanned systems work is getting more visibility. Let's step on the gas and build the infrastructure for the best student-centered UAS/RPV program in the US!
Get an entirely new perspective on a historic site.
Jason Miller's insight:
Here's a video, partially filmed using a DJI Phantom 2 (I think) that's making the rounds. The film maker created it while on assignment for a CBS news story.
With her right hand, my 8-year-old daughter, Kalian, presses the red-hot soldering iron against the circuit board. With her left hand, she guides a thin, tin wire until it's pressing against both the circuit board and the tip of the iron.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
The notion of maker spaces and actually building things can be a powerful motivator for STEM and other subjects as kids are in their formative stages.
Building drones is but one aspect of this movement.
A narrow debate over the LAPD's proposed, limited use of a pair of unmanned aircraft — popularly known as drones — is prompting a broader community conversation about the tension between technology and privacy in a city where police have not always traversed that boundary well.
It's been a little over a week since the Philippines was rocked by Typhoon Hiyan, but the world is still coming to grips with the extent of the devastation.
For those of you who want to see how to make surface mount boards without a nice soldering iron using just paste, the electronics video blogger Martin Lorton has released anew video showing exactly how I assemble prototypes and test out the process in preparation for manufacturing.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
This video is from a IR Camera start-up we tried to support (but which had an unsuccessful Kick Starter Campaign (the HEMA Imager).
Jump to 22 minutes to see how Erik is assembling his electronics with solder paste rather than traditional soldering.
The speed that drones can be deployed makes them ideal for delivering items when time is of the essence. The Ambulance Drone and Defikopter, for example, are used for transporting defibrillators t...
Jason Miller's insight:
There are so many uses for this kind of technology that appear to be good and reasonable. Why can't the FAA let Americans explore and be creative?"
Americans are skeptical that the benefits of the heralded drone revolution will outweigh the risks to privacy and safety, although a majority approve of using small, unmanned aircraft for dangerous jobs or in remote areas, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll.
Before you can do anything with data, you have to get it into the application. Working with an Arduino is no different. Although the process is changes, if you're used to working with desktop software.

PIRatE Lab's insight:
This is what we need to desperately avoid: idiots with little or no training brining multi rotors into an indoor setting with unshielded props and specifically flying near people. Thank god the lady that got hurt wasn't hurt even more harmfully.
The gift of two unmanned aerial vehicles from Northrop Grumman will help CSU Channel Islands students and faculty and reach new heights in educational exploration.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
These two Inventus-class UAVs are about a decade old, but they will be a great help in our rolling out of our coastal monitoring efforts and training for undergrads.
