With the advance in drone technology and the increasing availability of drones to the average person, drone detection systems like the Crow system used here are very important. I found it interesting how multiple Crow units can be combined to cover a larger area. It's interesting how it uses optics to detect objects, assess whether they're a threat, and pinpoint the location. This technology is extremely useful for large political events where drone interference is more likely.

A bit disturbing but I understand the goal of the project. Scientists and engineers are using dead birds such as mallard ducks and pigeons to transform them into drones for wildlife monitoring to mimic their flight pattern or swimming style.

From a monitoring standpoint, it would make sense to use something familiar to the birds being studied to avoid big disturbances. It made me chuckle a little that the article quotes a mechanical engineer specifically saying that "they haven't been developed for espionage"

Just as how we are learning to use our drones with an educational purpose, there are those that will always want to do things with malicious intent. There are already strict rules in place, hopefully there are faster methods to find the illegal use of drones in the near future to avoid situations similar to this.

Drones should be utilized more in disaster prevention over disaster relief. Ideally, more would be put into stopping climate change by all governments, but drones could definitely help in gathering data and identifying vulnerable areas. Preventions are better than cures, and I'm always happy to see drones used in anything other than war.

LiFePO4 chemistry offers a significantly lower risk of thermal runaway and does not require cobalt for production, but has a lower energy density than traditional Li-Ion cells and is already succeeding in home scale energy storage systems. If we start seeing regulations pushing for safety features in grid scale Li-Ion batteries that increase weight or decrease capacity LiFePO4 would seem like an even better choice than it already is.

It sounds like drone rides are going to be eventually available in Hong Kong. It is in the testing phase and no similar product is available to customers so they seem hopeful that this will make a nice tourist attraction.

Amazon says it has received approval from the FAA to fly its newer, smaller delivery drones, including beyond the visual line of sight of pilots.

Amazon Is now testing their new drone called the MK30 which is smaller and lighter than previous models, and can even fly through light rain. These drones will make delivery much easier and quicker for customers. These drones have even been granted permission to fly out of line of sight by the FAA. The testing ha begun in Phoenix, AZ.

While delivery via drone may seem like a great option with their energy efficiency and no need for an onboard operator, noise is a major issue. The small DJI drones we fly in class generate a noticeable noise, even from farther distances. I can't imagine the noise of the large delivery drones pictured in the article. It also seems like delivery drones could be easily targeted for theft.

Drones have spotted many subways surfers that have been arguably saved this year. Six have already died from subway surfing in the current year, and it can be said that many lives were saved thanks to drones interrupting their antics.

This new map sensor is very efficient for large-scale drone mapping, covering 1,140 acres in a single flight. The sensor was able to capture a 670 acre golf course in 37 minutes at 400 feet with the MAP61 sensor. The sensor also speeds up processing time by requiring fewer images to cover large areas. While this sensor is advanced and an efficient method for mapping large areas, the main issue is accessibility/affordability.

MAP61 requires fewer images to cover large areas, which means projects can be completed in a single day instead of two. This will save scientists a lot of time!

Autonomous vehicles and drones make me nervous. Granted, drone use began in the military, and thus most drones are government operated, the idea of autonomous drones powered by satellites that can be hacked for nefarious reasons doesn't sit well with me. Happy for ArkEdge Space, though. I also appreciate any/all efforts to protect GNSS.

This was surprise to me too that drones were being used for birdwatching. Also glad that they are recognizing some drones do give birds a negative response in using them and its recommended to use a slower drone that is not shaped as a predator.
