Remotely Piloted Systems
This is a media curation page for the PIRatE Lab's AARR Program.  We are developing practical, low cost programs to monitor resources in our coastal zone (the land near the ocean and the ocean near the land) with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs aka "drones") overhead and subtidal Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) .  Enjoy!!

Tiny Drones Do Distributed Mapping

Tiny Drones Do Distributed Mapping | Remotely Piloted Systems | Scoop.it
Sending teams of tiny drones to explore areas and structures is a staple in sci-fi and research, but the weight and size of sensors and the required processing power have long been a limiting factor
Austin Dent's insight:
I'm not convinced on the practicality side of this, but it does seem like these would be fun to build and fly!
Charla Robertson's comment, October 17, 2024 7:41 AM
Seems like it would be a fun robotics project or fun science camp activity!
Emily Gomez's comment, October 17, 2024 1:05 PM
Those are so cute and tiny! Because they are so small, they aren't able to have high quality sensors and cameras attatched, but I'm sure they'd make a great Christmas present!

Cargo drone service Japan: Drone

Cargo drone service Japan: Drone | Remotely Piloted Systems | Scoop.it
JDrone launches cargo drone service in Japan, using Yamaha FAZER R G2 and DJI Flycart 30 for rural and disaster-relief operations.
Max Morales's insight:
This I found to be an interesting thing they are trying to use more in Japan for delivery purposes from rural areas to natural disasters.
Liano Becerra's comment, October 15, 2024 10:15 PM
It is amazing that they use drones to help with recovery efforts, especially when Japan receives many earthquakes and the infrastructure is too damaged to move around.
Austin Dent's comment, October 16, 2024 8:55 PM
This is exactly the direction I want to see cargo drones heading. Bringing delivery drones to market has been a slow process, but disaster recovery has the potential to push through a lot of the bureaucracy and profitability questions that may have slowed development of this type of drone. It will be very interesting to see if the rescue angle has the potential to open up some of the regulations about payload delivery and line of sight flight in the US.
Carolyn Chaput's comment, October 18, 2024 12:21 AM
This is a great application of drones for helping people. I remember reading that relief efforts in rural Japan are really challenging, particularly in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami in 2011.

Sophia Hoolihan's comment, October 16, 2024 12:12 PM
It's smart to use drones for inspecting electric utilities. It allows the inspection to be quicker and less disruptive to residents, and cheaper for the company as more electrical units can be inspected each period.
Eduardo sandoval's comment, October 18, 2024 3:32 AM
Its a smart and effective choice to bring in drones for wildlife prevention inspections. The drones being utilized to go through hard to reach places will save us lots of time when inspecting.

Drones Collecting DNA from Treetops in New Approach Toward Conservation Efforts

To have a healthy ecosystem, we need biodiversity, as it supports all life on Earth, including humans. Without a variety of microorganisms, plants, and animals, we simply can't have a balanced environment. Biodiversity provides ecosystem services such as clean air, freshwater, and flood management, which are crucial to human well-being. It also supports food security, […]

Charla Robertson's insight:
I greatly appreciate any application of drones outside of war. This is an excellent example of how drones can be used to study different animals and their habitats. It's not clear if they also used underwater drones to study the stingrays, but it's really cool that they were able to obtain so many different angles and picks of them in their feeding pits.

Natalie Jones's comment, October 8, 2024 9:07 PM
This is pretty neat! I wonder how much drones contribute to pollution whether its noise or microplastics. Biodegradable is a smart idea for drones...I wonder how well it runs without a normal lithium battery and for how long.
Max Morales's comment, October 8, 2024 11:09 PM
That is really interesting and I never really thought about how drones might create waste so this is a really good idea for an alternative. Hopefully this idea of a biodegradable drone keeps getting worked on so that new technology advances can come from it.

Pentagon confirms ‘incursions’ of unauthorized drones over Air Force base
Keiran Gisonno's insight:
It becomes more and more frequent that we see cases of drones being used improperly, especially with ease of purchase nowadays. For military installations, this is an incredibly pressing issue; aside from it being difficult to actually track down those responsible for flying, their intents when illegally flying over a military base can be unknown; there's no way at the moment to tell if that person has come to be hostile, a spy for another nation, or just to take pictures, all of which are problematic.

UC Davis’ new fire research utilizes drones and ground sensors for early wildfire detection, enhancing firefighter safety and promoting sustainability.
Liano Becerra's insight:
UC Davis professors are working on installing sensors and sensors to detect wildfires before the idea of when there is smoke, there is a fire. Using chemical sensing can help firefighters get to the sense quicker to control a fire before it gets out of control. An example they used to compare the use of chemical sensors is when someone is burning wood in a fireplace you can smell it before visually seeing the fire.

Schiedea waiahuluensis (Caryophyllaceae), an enigmatic new species from Kaua'i, Hawaiian Islands and the first species discovered by a drone collection system

Schiedea waiahuluensis (Caryophyllaceae), an enigmatic new species from Kaua'i, Hawaiian Islands and the first species discovered by a drone collection system | Remotely Piloted Systems | Scoop.it
During a survey by the National Tropical Botanical Garden drone team, an enigmatic Schiedea was observed in December 2021on steep, rocky cliff faces of the Waiahulu Valley in the Waimea Canyon of Kaua'i. Subsequently, another survey was conducted in March 2022 and, by use of a remotely controlled cutting device suspended below the drone, the first herbarium specimen was collected, as well as a seed collection of an undescribed cliff-dwelling species of Schiedea. Detailed study of the collections and plants grown at the University of California, Irvine greenhouse showed that it had enlarged, somewhat whitish sepals similar to those of cliff-dwelling S. attenuata (the sole species in sect. Leucocalyx), yet differed significantly from all other species in the genus. It also shares with S. attenuata a woody habit, hermaphroditic flowers, coloured nectar and styles 5 to 7 or 8. We describe it here as S. waiahuluensis given the only known localities are on the cliffs of this valley and place it in an enlarged sect. Leucocalyx. With the discovery of this new species, there are 36 species in this Hawaiian endemic genus.
Austin Dent's insight:
Both types of drones used in the discovery and collection are models that we have here at CI!
Esveidy Rodriguez's comment, October 11, 2024 8:18 PM
This new species highlights how drones can access dangerous environments to collect specimens and seeds that was probably inaccessible. This is a good example of the many possibilities drones gives us.
Heather Farlow's comment, October 12, 2024 12:42 AM
It is amazing to see how drone technology is evolving and we are now at the point that we can remotely collect new plant samples via drone. I was also thinking that the use of drones in this situation was far less environmentally invasive than other methods that have been used for collection. No foot traffic was created around the new species due to the remotely piloted drone collection, which could be helpful in very vulnerable and sensitive environmental areas.

Using autonomous drones to acquire localized weather data is a very interesting concept. Local air quality information is especially useful in areas where outdoor physical activity/recreation occurs, like parks and hiking trails, and the air quality data displayed in most weather applications does not account for the spatial heterogeneity of most areas.
