Drones relay RFID signals for inventory control

Drones relay RFID signals for inventory control | Remotely Piloted Systems | Scoop.it
MIT researchers have developed a system that enables small, safe, aerial drones to read RFID tags from tens of meters away while identifying the tags’ locations. The system could be used in large warehouses to prevent inventory mismatches and locate individual items.

Recycled glass could help fend off coastal erosion

Recycled glass could help fend off coastal erosion | Remotely Piloted Systems | Scoop.it
Sand made from recycled glass can be mixed with sediment to make a medium for plants to grow in. That can help with coastal restoration projects.
William H's comment, September 17, 2:49 PM
I am always excited whenever people introduce new ways to tackle contemporary environmental issues that have evidence to back it up as a solution. I know that glass is not usually recycled nationally and so having a use for them like replenishing coasts would be a revolutionary outcome! Cool find Dustin!

Mia Arzola Hinderliter's comment, October 11, 2:41 AM
This seems like a really cool project because it would help with safety on unpaved roads. However, it sounds like it would be so extremely expensive plus it would probably add more tracking to individual cars so I don't know how applicable it will be.

Governor Newsom Signs Bill to Increase Affordable Housing in Coastal California

Governor Newsom Signs Bill to Increase Affordable Housing in Coastal California | Remotely Piloted Systems | Scoop.it
Governor Gavin Newsom has signed Senate Bill 484, creating a 10-year pilot program to streamline the coastal development permitting process for 100% affordable infill housing in coastal cities, in an effort to address California's severe housing shortage while maintaining environmental protections.
Esteban Roman's insight:
Not too sure how this would work. Affordable housing near the coast would only draw more foot traffic creating more pollution and trash near beaches. It is good to give everyone a fair chance however, sea level rise and coastal erosion is very real.

What does an acid trip typically feel like? Each person’s experience with acid will be different. Indeed, each trip may be different. One might be very light, but others can take a frightening and overwhelming turn. Symptoms may begin to show 20 to 90 minutesTrusted Source after taking a dose. The main episode can last several hours. Acid is a long-acting drug. It stays in the body 6 to 15 hoursTrusted Source. Most acid trips won’t last more than 9 hours. The trip During this period of “tripping” or active effects, you may begin to experience sensationalized perceptions of what’s happening around you. This can include “seeing” color or “tasting” sounds. Stationary items, like furniture, may begin to “move” or swell or shrink before your eyes. Coming down Coming down from the trip will feel like you’re gradually returning to Earth. Signs may begin to lessen in intensity. You may feel tired after getting through the hours-long trip and want to sleep. Afterglow An “afterglow” is possible for several hours after the end of the trip, too. This may feel like everything is “lighter” or “brighter” than before the trip. You may also have moments of flashbacks for several hours, even days, after the acid trip is over. Microdosing A microdose is a small dose of a psychedelic drug like LSD, often one-tenth of a normal dose. It’s sometimes used to help treat symptoms of anxiety and depression, but it’s not meant to completely encompass your day. However, little is known about the long-term effects of this practice. This article goes over how nature can help us achieve our goal set forth by the paris climate agreement, which is to limit global temperature rise to less than 2 degrees celcius. If we are smart and careful we can use nature as our ally to help fight climate change. However if we are not so smart nature could hinder our fight with rising global temperatures and contribute ultimately to natures desctruction.

Yosemite Drone Laws Exposed: Strict Bans, Hefty Fines, and Where You Can Still Fly Legally - Tech Space 2.0
William H's insight:
I found this to be an interesting article because it lists out the details behind National Parks drone rules and WHY they are put in place. In ESRM 341, Galipeau mentions the importance of leaving the parks "unimpaired." The disturbance to the guests and wildlife that drones can cause completely violate that.
Barbara Kim's comment, October 7, 2:49 PM
I thought the article did a great job showing how seriously drone laws are enforced in places like Yosemite. It reminded me of when I did a ride-along with the National Park Service at the Santa Monica Mountains — we were also monitoring for drones, and the ranger I was with would literally jump out of the car and run down to talk to anyone flying one. It really shows how important protecting wildlife and visitors’ experiences is, and why those strict rules are in place.
Esteban Roman's comment, October 8, 10:36 PM
I agree with what you mentioned about leaving the parks unimpaired and he also mentioned that in his guest lecture last with in Coastal. It is interesting to see why they are so strict.
