They live there in harmony and in reverence of the rivers, trees, and animals that inhabit their spectacular surroundings. The rainforest is where the Achuar find their food, medicines, and raw materials to construct anything they need. It is their sacred place of worship."

Ants plant rainforests, one seed at a time

Ants plant rainforests, one seed at a time | RAINFOREST EXPLORER | Scoop.it
Deforestation is destroying forests around the world, but its effects are especially obvious in the Amazon Basin. Due to cattle ranching, soybean farming, logging, and slash-and-burn agriculture, the rainforest is disappearing at a rapid pace. But a recent study published in the Journal of Ecology offers a unique solution to replanting the deforested landscapes: ants.

How orchid bees find their personal scent, attract mates

How orchid bees find their personal scent, attract mates | RAINFOREST EXPLORER | Scoop.it
A fragrant perfume has brought many a man and many a woman together. Orchid bees, too, appear to rely on scent when it comes to choosing a partner. In the course of their lives, the males compile a species-specific bouquet that they store in the pockets on their hind legs. One day, they release it in order to attract the female, assumes a biologist who studies the flying perfume aficionados' collecting behavior.
The Morpho Institute's insight:

A Marmoset Never Forgets | Science Blogs | WIRED | RAINFOREST EXPLORER | Scoop.it
Scientists studying social learning in animals have shown how easy it can be to introduce a new behavior into a group and watch it spread from individual to individual. However, not nearly as many studies are devoted to following up on the establishment of new behaviors to see if those behavioral traditions persist. An experiment showed that wild marmosets can remember their preferences for completing a test up to two years after first learning it.
