Ben Goertzel speaks on Open Cog development, compares the vibe of AI development in Hong Kong to that of the dot com boom in the US.
OpenCog is an open-source software project aimed at directly confronting the AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) challenge, using mathematical and biological inspiration and professional software engineering techniques. The OpenCog Foundation is a non-profit organization, founded in 2011 as a formal entity to foster research, guide the development of the project, and encourage the adoption of the framework in universities and research centers around the world.
Ben Goertzel is an American author and researcher in the field of artificial intelligence. He currently leads Novamente LLC, a privately held software company that attempts to develop a form of strong AI, which he calls "Artificial General Intelligence". He is also the CEO of Biomind LLC, a company that markets a software product for the AI-supported analysis of biological microarray data; and he is an advisor to the Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence, and formerly its Director of Research.

The fast-growing market for machine-to-machine (M2M) communications presents exciting new opportunities for service providers. They are becoming increasingly aware of the value of supporting M2M traffic and applications, and want to join or move up the M2M value chain. Service providers can reap M2M rewards by entering the market early, pursuing deep involvement and building vibrant partner ecosystems that span many vertical industries. Via Ludovic LE MOAN
"Across many industries, products and practices are being transformed by communicating sensors and computing intelligence. The smart industrial gear includes jet engines, bridges and oil rigs that alert their human minders when they need repairs, before equipment failures occur. Computers track sensor data on operating performance of a jet engine, or slight structural changes in an oil rig, looking for telltale patterns that signal coming trouble.
SENSORS on fruit and vegetable cartons can track location and sniff the produce, warning in advance of spoilage, so shipments can be rerouted or rescheduled. Computers pull GPS data from railway locomotives, taking into account the weight and length of trains, the terrain and turns, to reduce unnecessary braking and curb fuel consumption by up to 10 percent." With all the recent Goruck-ness it’s time to throw out a tech post. I’ve been prepping for a NodeJS presentation recently and wanted a unique demo. I had also come across the experimental build of Opera which supports accessing the native webcam of a mobile device. So I threw these two technologies together and came up with a Javascript powered way to stream a video camera from a mobile device to a bunch of desktop (or mobile) clients. Via Nicolas Weil

To up the creativity quotient in photography, we have here the Digimo Camera Concept. It is a modular set of multiple cameras that can be placed in any position and be controlled wirelessly from a considerable distance. The thought behind the concept is to encourage originality and give flexibility to the photographer, so that he can capture natural stills from different angles at the same time. I love its simple form and outstanding controls. One of those concepts that we wish was live now! Via Tiaan Jonker
