Just as today’s prevalent smoking bans can lead to a lot of cigarette butts on the doorsteps of public places, so the increasingly smoke-free world can make it difficult for smokers to find a place to enjoy their habit. Enter Croatian cigarette brand Ronhill, which has begun to use QR codes on its packaging to help consumers find a nearby place to smoke.

If you drive past a scrap yard in Charlotte’s NoDa neighborhood you won’t see it, no matter how hard you look. There, up on the roof of Southern Resources, are the makings of the world’s largest QR code. On Monday, painters were busy laying down a pattern of black and white squares. The finished product will cover most of the 10,000 square feet of space. It’ll be so big each of the pixels will be at least one square meter.

Most people already know what QR codes are: a new type of "barcode" that can be used for a variety of purposes - tracking, ticketing, labeling of products, and many more. They can also be used for storing URLs, allowing users to scan them with their smartphones and be immediately directed to the URL in question on their device's browser - an ability that researcher Augusto Peryra recently claimed will be soon misused by cyber criminals to direct users to malware.

Using QR Codes as Contact Details [Exceprt:] Many presenters leave their contact details in their last slide as a means of continuing the conversation with the audience. But barrier for the audience is that it’s troublesome to type/write down the details from looking at the slide. Too many details, numbers and complex website addresses to note within a short time where the slide is flashed. I’d recently started using QR codes into my slides for clients.
