Commemorating the Freedom Ride

Commemorating the Freedom Ride | Primary history- Australia as a Nation | Scoop.it
Catherine Smyth's curator insight, April 1, 2013 7:44 PM

What was the Freedom Ride? Why did it happen? What was significant about the Freedom Ride through New South Wales? Who was involved? Where did the Freedom Riders go? What was life like in 1965?

The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies website is home to a range of primary sources relating to the Freedom Ride.

Use the Shell Map of the route, newspaper clippings, diaries and photographs to answer historical questions and construct an historical narrative of the event.

Catherine Smyth's comment, April 1, 2013 8:08 PM
What was the Eureka Stockade? When did it occur? Why did it occur? Where was it? Why is it significant? What was life like at the time? Historians ask questions. In the classroom, genuine inquiries are built around questions that both students and teachers ask.

Years 3–6
Australian history, arts
Catherine Smyth's insight:

Citizen's Arch is an interactive game about the celebration of Federation in 1901. There is a lot of information about symbols, flags and images and why they symbolised what was important to Australia in 1901.

I like how the game uses a range of primary sources from the time but a greater emphasis on historical questions and historical inquiry is needed. Before using the game in the classroom, teachers should help their students generate questions that guide their inquiry. Teachers should then model how students can use sources to answer historical questions AND how they then draw conclusions from evidence.

Trove: Find and get Australian resources. Books, images, historic newspapers, maps, archives and more.

If you are using primary sources in the classroom consider the following:

1. actively teach the document type (e.g. personal document, letter, diary, goal records...)

2. Look at the text in original form

3. students pick out one word or phrase in the original text

4. show students the transcription for easy reading

5. students identify names of people and places

6. look for words which mean something in particular

7. ask students what they think the overall document means from what they know so far

8. read the whole document with the class following the text
