If you are using primary sources in the classroom consider the following:
1. actively teach the document type (e.g. personal document, letter, diary, goal records...)
2. Look at the text in original form
3. students pick out one word or phrase in the original text
4. show students the transcription for easy reading
5. students identify names of people and places
6. look for words which mean something in particular
7. ask students what they think the overall document means from what they know so far
8. read the whole document with the class following the text
