Manta Rays: How illegal Trade Eats Its Own Lunch - Ocean Poaching | OUR OCEANS NEED US | Scoop.it

March 5, 2013 Damian Carrington: The Guardian Environment

The gills of this magnificent glider of the oceans are valuable, but the rays are worth far more alive than dead.

If you think that protecting wildlife, especially the big, sexy creatures, is a worthy thing to do but has little to with the lives of people, consider the case of the manta ray. A trade in their gills worth just $5-10m a year is devastating their populations which, in the places where it is developed, supports a tourist trade worth well over $100m a year... http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/damian-carrington-blog/2013/mar/05/manta-rays-cites-illegal-wildlife-trade

Clownfish helps its anemone host to breathe | OUR OCEANS NEED US | Scoop.it

April 24, 2013 Mongabay

The sight of a clownfish wriggling through the stinging tentacles of its anemone is a familiar and seemingly well-understood one to most people—the stinging anemone provides a protective home for the clownfish who is immune to such stings, and in turn the clownfish chases away any polyp-eating sunfish eyeing the anemone's tentacles for a meal. But recent research has shown that all that clownfish wriggling significantly helps to oxygenate the anemone at night, when oxygen levels in the water are low. ... http://news.mongabay.com/2013/0424-oneill-clownfish-anemone.html

The End of The Line - The Future Of Fish

The End of The Line - The Future Of Fish | OUR OCEANS NEED US | Scoop.it

July 07, 2012 TIME Magazine

Fish are the last wild food, but our oceans are being picked clean. Can farming fish take the place of catching them?

"Fish are the last wild food," says Paul Greenberg, author of Four Fish, one of the best books on the state of seafood. "And we're just realizing it."

But we may be coming to that realization too late, because it turns out that even the fathomless depths of the oceans have limits. The U.N. reports that 32% of global fish stocks are overexploited or depleted and as much as 90% of large species like tuna and marlin have been fished out in the past half-century. Once-plentiful species like Atlantic cod have been fished to near oblivion, and delicacies like bluefin tuna are on an arc toward extinction. A recent report by the International Programme on the State of the Ocean found that the world's marine species faced threats "unprecedented in human history" — and overfishing is part of the problem.  ▶   KRILL SUPER TRAWLERS PUSHING PENGUINS TOWARD EXTINCTION... Penguins are threatened with extinction by climate change and giant fishing trawlers from Europe and Asia stalking the oceans around Antarctica. Penguins are a protected species, but the factory-sized trawlers are vacuuming up the tiny shrimp-like krill that are their main food source. The Southern Ocean is also becoming increasingly acidic from emissions of fossil fuels and will have a significant impact on krill populations. And yet efforts to create two marine protected areas in the Southern Ocean have been blocked by China, Russia and Norway.... http://www.ipsnews.net/2013/04/krill-super-trawlers-pushing-penguins-toward-extinction/

The fish near the bottom of the aquatic food chain are often overlooked, but they are vital to healthy oceans and estuaries. Collectively known as forage fish, these species—including sardines, anchovies, herrings, and shrimp-like crustaceans called krill—feed on plankton and become food themselves for larger fish, seabirds, and marine mammals.

Dutch want their mussels free from micro-plastic litter, call on EU to act | OUR OCEANS NEED US | Scoop.it

EurActive, June 18, 2013

-▶ DUTCH WANT MUSCLES FREE FROM MICROPLASTIC. Toxic substances contained in micro-plastic waste can enter the food chain through ingestion by marine fauna like sea cucumbers, plankton and mussel..Micro-plastics, the Netherlands argues, find their way into marine ecosystems, resulting in a concentration of micro-plastics in water that are “sometimes higher than that of plankton”. These substances usually originate from industry, household products and cosmetics such as scrubs or toothpaste.

Endangered species cannot recover and survive without efforts on both sides of the border to ensure they are protected from acoustic harm.

Whales face numerous threats, many from garbage and toxins dumped into the oceans. Human-caused noise pollution also harms whales, leading to death, stranding, temporary and permanent hearing loss and hemorrhaging around the brain, ears and other tissues from decompression sickness when whales are startled by sound and surface too quickly.... http://www.davidsuzuki.org/blogs/science-matters/2013/02/sonar-and-whales-are-a-deadly-mix/

Pacific leatherback turtle, known for its arduous 6,000-mile ocean trek, faces extinction in 20 years | OUR OCEANS NEED US | Scoop.it

Feb 28, 2013:

The Pacific leatherback braves a transpacific journey that is one of the longest migrations in nature. Experts say its continued existence is imperiled by threats like climate change, plastic pollution, fishing methods, predation and human hunting The leatherback - the world's largest turtle - can grow to six feet long and weigh as much as 2,000 pounds (900 kg).

 be extinct in 20 years."

A study published this week in the Ecological Society of America's scientific journal Ecosphere estimates that only about 500 leatherbacks now nest at their last large nesting site in the Pacific, down from thousands previously. The study tracked the turtle's ongoing population decline since the 1980s.

The giant Pacific leatherback turtle, known for its arduous 6,000-mile ocean trek from the U.S. West Coast to breeding grounds in Indonesia, could go extinct within 20 years as its population continues to plummet, scientists say...

Sea turtles have been around about 100 million years and survived the extinction of the dinosaurs but are struggling to survive the impact of humans," said reproductive biologist Thane Wibbels of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), a member of a research team studying the fate of these reptiles. "If the decline continues, leatherback turtles will become extinct in the Pacific Ocean within 20 years," Wibbels said.http://planetark.org/wen/68042

As fish populations deplete, jellyfish populations are growing throughout much of the world. The fact that human beings and jellyfish tangle with one another more frequently than in the past is unpleasant for both sides.... http://www.spiegel.de/fotostrecke/photo-gallery-the-jellification-of-the-seas-fotostrecke-98970.html

In the final analysis we cannot drink oil or eat money.  It is folly to expect infinite growth and profits from a finite source. Without Nature we humans do not exist. To the degree Nature is sick and out of balance so are we for we depend upon the natural world every moment of every day for our survival. We source everything from Nature.  Everything we consume and create has it's origins in Nature, down to the ingredients (resources) for products, food, shelter, and all of our consumer items.   And then, in our crazy busy, treadmill lives, there is the ascetic beauty and wonder we have forgotten to appreciate of an miraculous biosphere NOT created by man.  Time to pause and reflect?
