Summit County Citizens Voice, January 30, 2015
FIVE YEARS ON: STUDY FINDS MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF OIL FROM DEEPWATER HORIZON DISASTER BURIED IN GULF OF MEXICO. Five years after BP’s failed Deepwater Horizon drill rig spewed 200 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, a significant amount of that oil remains buried in seafloor sediments. A new study by a Florida State University researcher estimates that about 6 to 10 million gallons of oil are still there, perhaps decomposing slowly, but probably affecting Gulf ecosystems. “This is going to affect the Gulf for years to come,” said researcher Jeff Chanton. “Fish will likely ingest contaminants because worms ingest the sediment, and fish eat the worms. It’s a conduit for contamination into the food web,” he said sediments http://summitcountyvoice.com/2015/01/30/study-finds-massive-amounts-of-oil-from-deepwater-horizon-disaster-buried-in-gulf-of-mexico-sediments/

SCIENTISTS DISCOVER HUGE 'BATHTUB RING' OF OIL ON SEA FLOOR FROM BP SPILL Scientists revealed more damage from the BP oil spill in the Gulf Coast. And Kara Lankford, director of Ocean Conservancy’s Gulf Restoration, slammed BP for attempting to downplay the spill's effects on the area's ecosystem. The study by David Valentine, the chief scientist on the federal damage assessment research ships, estimates that about 10 million gallons of oil coagulated on the floor of the Gulf of Mexico around the damaged Deepwater Horizons oil rig. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/10/27/gulf-oil-spill-bathtub-ring_n_6056348.html

▶  COREXIT DISPERSENT USED WITH BP DEEPWATER HORIZON OIL DISASTER: LIFE ON THIS EARTH JUST CHANGED ... THE NORTH ATLANTIC CURRENT IS GONE - The entire ‘river of warm water’ that flows from the Caribbean to the edges of Western Europe is dying due to the Corexit that the Obama Administration allowed BP to use to hide the scale of the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Disaster. The approximately two million gallons of Corexit, plus several million gallons of other dispersants, have caused the over two hundred million gallons of crude oil, that has gushed for months from the BP wellhead and nearby sites, to mostly sink to the bottom of the ocean. This has helped to effectively hide much of the oil, with the hopes that BP can seriously reduce the mandated federal fines from the oil disaster. However, there is no current way to effectively ‘clean up’ the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico, which is about half covered in crude oil. Additionally, the oil has flowed up the East Coast of America and into the North Atlantic Ocean. It is likely, based on numerous reports, that the oil is still flowing in massive amounts from multiple places on the seabed floor. This effectively means, that even if we had the technology in place to somehow clean up the free flowing thick crude oil deep in the ocean, it would likely not be enough to reverse the damage to the Thermohaline Circulation System in the Atlantic Ocean.

PROFIT POLLUTION AND DECEPTION BP AND THE OIL SPILL

                                     Published on Nov 1, 2013

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill (also referred to as the BP oil spill, the BP oil disaster, the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, and the Macondo blowout) began on 20 April 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico on the BP-operated Macondo Prospect. It claimed eleven lives and is considered the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry, an estimated 8% to 31% larger in volume than the previously largest, the Ixtoc I oil spill. Following the explosion and sinking of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, a sea-floor oil gusher flowed for 87 days, until it was capped on 15 July 2010. The total discharge has been estimated at 4.9 million barrels (210 million US gal; 780,000 m3). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zGFvzMMO9w

SCIENTIST ALARMED AT SEA TURTLE'S SUDDEN DECLINE IN GULF. Scientific research presented on the Kemp's ridley raised the possibility that the 2010 BP oil spill, the largest in U.S. history, might have contributed to the declines of sea turtle nests in 2013 and 2014, which have alarmed scientists. [...] experts outlined other factors that may be harming the turtles, such as a die-off of the creatures the turtles eat, expanding dead zones where oxygen is so scant that almost nothing can survive, pesticide runoff and other chemicals dumped in the Gulf.  http://www.chron.com/news/science-environment/article/Signs-grow-of-oil-spill-effect-on-turtles-5903833.php

                           COREXIT: EXXON VALDEZ OIL SPILL

The dispersant Corexit 9580 was considered and tried but was not used for shore clean-up due largely to concerns about toxicity. According to the booklet Shoreline Treatment Techniques published in 1993 by the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, while it effectively assisted in clean-up, "It had not been tested, scientific data on its toxicity were either thin or incomplete, and it had operational problems. In addition, public acceptance of a new, widespread chemical treatment was lacking. To landowners, fishing groups, and conservation organizations, the idea of dumping chemicals on hundreds of miles of shorelines that had just been oiled seemed much too risky - especially when there were other alternatives."

According to a report by David Kirby for TakePart, the main component of the Corexit formulation used during cleanup, 2-butoxyethanol, was identified as "one of the agents that caused liver, kidney, lung, nervous system, and blood disorders among cleanup crews in Alaska following the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill.

Samantha Groen's curator insight, February 4, 2015 11:43 AM

BP was banned from preforming any work in the US in 2012 and now the suspension has been lifted. They are back in the oil game. They had to pay a $4.5 billion fine, admit to lying about the damages, plead guilty, and now they are back in business. Their incident caused the death of 11 workers and the destruction of the Gulf of Mexico. Their attempts to make it better were pathetic. It is interesting how people can put a dollar value to the damage and death of people and a huge mass of water and fish population.

This was a huge example of poor corporate social responsibility and the damages are still taking its toll. Reading about the research on how the fish and sea creatures are still being affected 5 years later. The response that the BP representatives are giving in respect to the research on how the fish's hearts are being affected just shows that they are still not practicing good corporate social responsibility and it is sad to see how little a company will take care for their mistakes and the world they live in.

Oceanographers and ecologists recently discovered that about 70 percent of marine debris actually sinks to the bottom of the ocean, so what we do know about the amount of waste in the ocean is likely just the very tip of the iceberg.

Makenzie Geiger's curator insight, December 3, 2015 10:04 AM

The Pacific Garbage Patch, which is a 100,000 ton of floating debris,is outrageous! I think that we need to protect our environment especially our oceans because when all else fails that is a big water source for lots of people across the globe.

Cohen Adkins's curator insight, December 3, 2015 10:13 AM

In my opinion their should be more people enforcing the laws placed on littering not only the ocean but on land aswell. The earth should be kept as clean as possible to prevent people from getting sick and their would be a better production of food. The ocean contains many fish that are dieing from the trash that are in our oceans and if we just kept the ocean cleaner their would be a bigger production of food.  C.A

Jellyfish are taking over the seas, and it might be too late to stop them | OUR OCEANS NEED US | Scoop.it

October 15, 2013

-▶  THE HUMAN IMPACT OF MAJOR JELLYFISH BLOOM

Sweden’s Oskarshamn nuclear power plant, which supplies 10% of the country’s energy, had to shut down one of its three reactors after a jellyfish invasion clogged the piping of its cooling system. The invader, a creature called a moon jellyfish, is 95% water and has no brain. Not what you might call menacing if you only had to deal with one or two. ...

Research of 45 major marine ecosystems shows that 62% saw an uptick in blooms (pdf) since 1950. In those areas, surging jellyfish numbers have caused power plant outages, destroyed fisheries and cluttered the beaches of holiday destinations.

The proliferation of jellyfish appears to be related to humans’ impact on the oceans. The toll we take on the seas may augur a new world order of jellyfish disasters, which, in turn, could devastate the global economy. .. http://qz.com/133251/jellyfish-are-taking-over-the-seas-and-it-might-be-too-late-to-stop-them/

A billion-dollar business puts species and people at risk | OUR OCEANS NEED US | Scoop.it

April 28, 2012 IUCN, International Union for Conervation of Nature

At least 12% of groupers – globally-important food fish species that live on coral and rocky reefs – face extinction, putting the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of people around the world at risk, finds a report published today by the International Union for Conservation of Nature Species Survival Commission’s (IUCN SSC) Grouper and Wrasse Specialist Group.

The study points to overfishing and the booming international luxury seafood trade as major threats to the survival of some grouper species, and to the livelihoods of those who depend on them for food and income. Its authors call for urgent conservation and management efforts to prevent further declines of these species... http://www.iucn.org/?uNewsID=12869

                      THE VANISHING UNDERWATER JUNGLES

Giant jungles of kelp were once so thick on Australia's East Coast, they were included on shipping maps. But scientists say the kelp's demise is linked to climate change - and the prognosis is poor for marine habitats..... http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-04-26/the-vanishing-underwater-jungles/4654722

NOAA Fisheries,
-▶ HELP FROM KELP: SEAWEED KELP FORESTS TO HELP WITH OCEAN ACIDIFICATION. Many seaweeds, including kelp, thrive in acidifying ocean waters. They take up CO2 and nutrients from their environment, improving water quality as they grow by drawing down levels of the dissolved acid along with nitrogen and  phosphorus. Seaweeds also give off oxygen, which can help with dead zones.  The combination may result in seaweed farms acting as protective “halos” that mitigate acidification and pollution locally while creating habitat for marine species. When the seaweed is harvested it takes the excess carbon and nitrogen with it, effectively removing them from the ocean http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/aquaculture/homepage_stories/paul_allen_grant.html

Is Genetically Engineered Salmon Safe and Ethical? Corporations Creating and Patenting Life? | OUR OCEANS NEED US | Scoop.it

January 22, 2013 Global Possibilities

IS GENETICALLY ENGINEERED SALMON SAFE?

There are massively disturbing ethical, environmental, and health concerns that make the introduction of Frankenfish highly controversial...

Frankenfish could be on your dinner plate by the end of the year.

On December 21, at the very end of the last business day before Christmas week, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) quietly released its environmental assessment that found “no significant impact” from the controversial AquaBounty AquaAdvantage transgenic salmon.,,

What is the rationale behind genetically engineered salmon? Why have scientists spliced genes from an eel-like creature called the ocean pout into the genome of the Atlantic salmon? These genes crank out growth hormone year-round, resulting in a fish that grows faster, cutting the time to reach market weight almost in half. This could mean cost savings for fish farmers, leading to higher profits for the salmon farming industry and (they promise) lower prices for consumers.

But there are massively disturbing ethical, environmental, and health concerns that make the introduction of Frankenfish highly controversial... http://www.globalpossibilities.org/is-genetically-engineered-salmon-safe/

25 March 2013 - SF Gate

Argentina's coast guard cutter Thompson fired warning shots at two Chinese trawlers, blocking their escape into international waters....

Ten tons of squid were found in the holds of the Lu Rong Yu 6177 and 6178 after they were hauled into port on Christmas Day.

But this was just the first such capture in two years, a minor disturbance to the hundreds of unlicensed, unregulated fishing vessels that exploit the South Atlantic, pulling out an estimated 300,000 tons of ilex squid a year. pdjmoo's curator insight, April 25, 2013 2:08 AM

AquaBounty Technologies the patent-seeking company for genetically engineered salmon has tried to cover all the bases for possible objections.  This includes raising these giant salmon in captivity on land to avoid possible ocean contamination.  What is interesting is they are proposing to do this in Panama, away from US prying eyes and where there is no oversight, regulations for how they are bred for import back into the USA.  Further, a fish this size should not be bred in captivity, enslaved in cramped quarters requiring antibiotics and pesticides for the lice that comes from such artificial breeding grounds.  Fish need to swim in the open ocean.  The answer to all this is to stop over-fishing so that our oceans can recover from the devastating losses experienced from massive ocean trawlers decimating the natural biodiversity of our oceans.

New Diseases, Toxins Harming Marine Life

New Diseases, Toxins Harming Marine Life | OUR OCEANS NEED US | Scoop.it

..

The dead sea otters arrived at Melissa Miller's Santa Cruz, California, lab with bright-yellow eyes and gums, their livers destroyed. Harmful organisms usually found on land are infiltrating coastal areas, wreaking havoc on marine mammals.... scientists are just now beginning to understand how these and other toxins in the water are spurring the resurgence of some diseases and the creation of others, largely by weakening animals' immune systems. And with more development and pollution in coastal areas, the problem appears to be accelerating.... http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2012/04/130412-diseases-health-animals-science-environment-oceans/?utm_source=NatGeocom&utm_medium=Email&utm_content=env_20130424&utm_campaign=Content

Great New Website: The Blue Carbon Initiative - IUCN

Great New Website: The Blue Carbon Initiative - IUCN | OUR OCEANS NEED US | Scoop.it

April 2, 2013 CONSERVATION INTERNATIONAL

Efforts to restore marine ecosystems that store vast amounts of carbon have received a boost with the launch of a new website that provides the latest blue carbon science and policy.

The International Blue Carbon Initiative is a coordinated, global program focused on mitigating climate change through the conservation and restoration of coastal and marine ecosystems. Coastal ecosystems are some of the most productive on Earth. They provide us with essential ecosystem services, such as coastal protection from storms and nursery grounds for fish. We also know that they provide another integral service – sequestering and storing “blue” carbon from the atmosphere and oceans and hence are an essential piece of the solution to global climate change.... http://thebluecarboninitiative.org/

World's Only Freshwater, Finless Porpoise on brink of extinction

World's Only Freshwater, Finless Porpoise on brink of extinction | OUR OCEANS NEED US | Scoop.it

April 6, 2013 - Focusing On Wildlife

The Yangtze finless porpoise population has declined to a mere 1,000 individuals, making the endangered species even more rare than the wild giant panda, the 2012 Yangtze Freshwater Dolphin Survey Report reveals. The population in the mainstream of the Yangtze River was less than half of what a similar survey found six years ago, with food shortages and human disturbance such as increased shipping traffic major threats to their survival....

The study also found that the rare species annual rate of decline now stands at 13.7 percent, which means that the Yangtze finless porpoise could be extinct as early as the year 2025. http://focusingonwildlife.com/news/yangtze-finless-porpoise-population-nosedives-to-1000/

Tiny Grazers Play Key Role in Marine Ecosystem Health - The Symbiosis of Nature

Tiny Grazers Play Key Role in Marine Ecosystem Health - The Symbiosis of Nature | OUR OCEANS NEED US | Scoop.it

April 5, 2013 Water World

Washington DC (SPX) Apr 05, 2013 -

Tiny sea creatures no bigger than a thumbtack are being credited for playing a key role in helping provide healthy habitats for many kinds of seafood, according to a new study by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science and U.S. Geological Survey.

The little crustacean "grazers," some resembling tiny shrimp, are critical in protecting seagrasses from overgrowth by algae, helping keep these aquatic havens healthy for native and economically important species. http://www.terradaily.com/reports/Tiny_Grazers_Play_Key_Role_in_Marine_Ecosystem_Health_999.html

Overfished and under-protected: Oceans on the brink of catastrophic collapse - CNN VIDEO

Overfished and under-protected: Oceans on the brink of catastrophic collapse - CNN VIDEO | OUR OCEANS NEED US | Scoop.it

March 22, 2013 -  CNN

As the human footprint has spread, the remaining wildernesses on our planet have retreated. However, dive just a few meters below the ocean surface and you will enter a world where humans very rarely venture.,,,

Remoteness, however, has not left the oceans and their inhabitants unaffected by humans, with overfishing, climate change and pollution destabilizing marine environments across the world.

Many marine scientists consider overfishing to be the greatest of these threats. The Census of Marine Life, a decade-long international survey of ocean life completed in 2010, estimated that 90% of the big fish had disappeared from the world's oceans, victims primarily of overfishing.

SHARKS GONE FROM ICELAND MENUS http://www.bite-back.com/sharks-gone-from-iceland/

 March 7, 2013 - Environment News Service

-▶ NATIONS CONSIDER PROTECTING SHARKS AS 100 MILLION DIE EACH YEAR: BANGKOK, Thailand, March 7, 2013 (ENS) – Every year in commercial fisheries around the world some 100 million sharks die, according to scientific findings released today in the peer-reviewed journal “Marine Policy.” In Bangkok, representatives of 178 governments will decide within the next week whether or not to protect the most vulnerable shark species. Some years the number of sharks killed in fisheries is as high as 273 million, some years the number drops to 63 million – in any case it adds up to a lot of shark fin soup. Sharks grow slowly and reproduce late in life, so the rate of killing is rapidly exceeding the birth rate, and sharks of many species are being pushed into extinction. Sharks are biologically vulnerable and in high demand....  http://ens-newswire.com/2013/03/08/nations-consider-protecting-sharks-as-100-million-die-each-year/
