-▶  SEAFOOD "COULD BE COOKED BY CLIMATE CHANGE" We could reach a point where governments battle it out over dwindling pockets of seafood. It’s all linked to the oceans acidifying: “The two aspects are: one, as they warm up they no longer absorb as much oxygen so you end up with fish sizes that are smaller.

“The second thing is, the impact of the temperature increase and increased CO2 specifically causes ocean acidification, so the pH of the water changes. which then is of real risk to things like shellfish as well as to coral reefs.”

-▶  GLOBAL WARMING:  REPORT WARNS OF 'ARCTIC SQUEEZE'. An entire bio-climatic zone, the high Arctic, may disappear.

FRISCO — Rapid climate change in the Arctic is putting enormous pressure on ecosystems, threatening biodiversity and the fundamental way of life of indigenous Arctic peoples, scientists said in a major new report.

“An entire bio-climatic zone, the high Arctic, may disappear. Polar bears and the other highly adapted organisms cannot move further north, so they may go extinct. We risk losing several species forever,” said Hans Meltofte of Aarhus University, chief scientist of the report.

SAVING SEA TURTLES IN MEXICO' MAGDALENA BAY

A new short film, "Viva la tortuga" documents the struggle to save loggerhead and green sea turtles in Magdalena Bay, Mexico. Once a region for a massive sea turtle meat market, the turtles now face a new threat: BY-CATCH.

Loggerhead sea turtles are drowning in bottom-set gillnets, unable to escape from the nets once entangled. The issue has even raises threats of trade embargoes from the U.S.

Still, the news is not all gloomy: a rising group of fishermen turned conservationists are working to save these species from local extinction. http://focusingonwildlife.com/news/featured-video-saving-sea-turtles-in-mexicos-magdalena-bay/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=featured-video-saving-sea-turtles-in-mexicos-magdalena-bay

TORONTO, Oct. 15, 2012 /CNW/ - A year-long undercover investigation conducted by the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) at the Cayman Turtle Farm, a popular tourist destination and the world's last remaining facility that raises sea turtles for slaughter, has revealed disturbing animal cruelty and potential human health risks.Video footage and photographs from the farm show thousands of endangered sea turtles being kept in dirty, crowded touch tanks. Swimming in water filled with their own waste, the turtles fight for food, bite each other and even resort to cannibalism. Many suffer from disease and birth defects, such as injured fins or missing eyes....

The trend in catch rates, the authors of the assessment results maintain, indicates the need for take limits on this legal fishery. http://www.terradaily.com/reports/Declining_catch_rates_in_Caribbean_green_turtle_fishery_may_be_result_of_overfishing_999.html

pdjmoo's insight:

Man has messed so deeply and drastically with the natural planetary symbiotic needs of species that there is now not enough food for all species to go around.   Mass extinctions are occurring and man will only make it worse by trying to "manage" and determine which species dies and lives for he has little understanding of the greater biosphere's needs and how it truly operates.   Man is depending on science (which is ever evolving as new information comes in) to allow it to commercially annhilalate what is standing in it's way of "profits".  A recipe for massive eco disaster on Planet Earth.  Without Nature We Humans Do Not Exist.  Period

Its sad that so many pups died.  But also reading that they took in so many pups to feed and give them temporary homes.  But when you have to put them back in the sea would they know how to get food?  Also would there still be fish for them to eat?

WATCH: SEA THE TRUTH -- BY 2048 The Oceans Will Be Empty! (full-length, HiQ)

(NOTE for the YouTube-Team: we have uploaded this movie with the permission of the Nicolaas G. Pierson Foundation)

http://www.SeaTheTruth.nl/en/ or
http://www.GlobeTransformer.org

BACKGROUND
Sea the Truth is based on numerous scientific publications that examine the problems of seas and oceans. Below follows an overview of the themes addressed in the film and a brief explanation.

FISHING POLICY AND QUOTA
Fishing policy around the world is destructive. Recommendations from scientists on quotas are ignored by policy makers, wealthy countries plunder the fishing territories of poor countries and bottom trawlers sow destruction all over the seafloor with their dragnets. In Europe, 88% of fish stocks have been overharvested, such as the blue fin tuna which sadly is threatened with extinction.

EFFECTS OF FISHING ON MARINE ECOSYSTEMS
In addition to the effect on the fish stocks, fishing also affects all other organisms in the same habitat or ecosystem. Whether the fish being harvested are predatory or prey, the balance of the ecosystem is disrupted and this can have serious consequences. The degree of disruption strongly depends on the fishing method employed.

BYCATCH
The term bycatch has come to be used to refer to fish caught unintentionally when fishermen fish for commercial fish. These kinds of fish are not interesting to sell and as a consequence they are thrown back into the ocean either death or mutilated. The average bycatch worldwide is about 40.4% of the total amount of fish being caught. This means that 3 kilos of consumed fish brings about 2 kilos of bycatch. In total, 37 billion kilos of fish per year is wasted bycatch.

FISH SUFFERING
People once thought that fish could not feel anything when they are caught. This idea was probably motivated because fish are cold blooded; this is in contrast with humans who are warm blooded. However, the ability to feel pain does not have anything to do with body temperature. From research studying the behavior of fish, as well as the study of anatomy and physiology, it turns out that fish have feelings and are in fact able to feel pain. This means that the current methods to catch and kill fish are in truth a torture for fish, moreover captured fish die of suffocation: a process that can take up to several minutes or hours.

THE PLASTIC SOUP
Between Hawaii and San Francisco floats an enormous amount of rubbish -- a plastic soup with a surface area of 8.6 million square kilometres. To compare: This is 33 times greater than the surface area of the Netherlands (41,528 km2). This plastic soup was 'discovered' by Charles Moore when he sailed through this area with his boat and found himself surrounded day in day out by plastic waste. He later returned with scientific equipment to determine the soup's total size. The plastic soup is a huge threat to a number of marine animals and mammals.

TOXINS IN FISH
We're told we should eat fish twice a week as it is packed with nutrition. These healthy nutrients are however easily obtained from other food sources, whereas fish may also contain large amounts of toxins. Mercury and dioxins 'enjoy' the status of most researched toxins in fish.

Sublandia's curator insight, July 9, 2013 12:44 AM

All this make me terrified. However I do not want to hide my head in the sand. Let's take it like a stimulus to protect our sea, avoding plastic soups, doing something when fishing and food sources are involved.

Deadly BiCatch: Destructive Corporate Fishing Gear Kills 400K+ Seabirds, millions of other species - per year | OUR OCEANS NEED US | Scoop.it

June 17, 2013 Oceana

▶  "WALLS OF DEATH" Gillnets have often been described in this haunting way due to their devastating ability to catch all kinds of fish, as well as sea turtles, seals, dolphins, and even whales. Marine Marine creatures of all sizes and species are indiscriminately snared and drowned in these death traps...

Other academic studies have estimated that a minimum of 160,000 additional birds are killed each year by another insidious fishing gear – longlines. Longlines, which dangle thousands of deadly hooks on fishing lines up to 50 miles long, are widely used in commercial fishing. Approximately 1.4 billion baited hooks are set in longline fisheries every year. Longlines and gillnets are quickly making seabirds a prime victim of bycatch -- the unintended catch of non-target marine life during commercial fishing activities that often results in huge amounts of fish and marine wildlife  being thrown back into the water, dead or dying.

▶  JUST $200 PER FISHING VESSEL COULD SAVE THOUSANDS OF ALBATROSSES FROM INDUSTRIAL FISHING GEAR. The commercial fisheries aren’t going to stop their business for the seabirds.  it’s all too easy for a seabird to get caught up in the fishing gear that trails behind a fishing boat, and when they do, it’s usually fatal. In 2004-2005, an estimated 15,500 birds were killed that way off of South Africa. Pelagic albatrosses and petrels are particularly hard-hit,  http://conservationmagazine.org/2014/05/just-200-per-fishing-vessel-could-save-thousands-of-albatrosses/

SAVING SEA TURTLES IN MEXICO' MAGDALENA BAY

A new short film, "Viva la tortuga" documents the struggle to save loggerhead and green sea turtles in Magdalena Bay, Mexico. Once a region for a massive sea turtle meat market, the turtles now face a new threat: BY-CATCH.

Loggerhead sea turtles are drowning in bottom-set gillnets, unable to escape from the nets once entangled. The issue has even raises threats of trade embargoes from the U.S.

Still, the news is not all gloomy: a rising group of fishermen turned conservationists are working to save these species from local extinction. http://focusingonwildlife.com/news/featured-video-saving-sea-turtles-in-mexicos-magdalena-bay/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=featured-video-saving-sea-turtles-in-mexicos-magdalena-bay

China has a taste for turtle; turtle soup, turtle eggs, turtle bone ground up for use in Chinese medicine to promote longevity – for people, not for the turtles.

But as Chinese waters are increasingly depleted of sea turtles, Chinese poachers are going further afield to find them. That includes hunting in waters that both China and the Philippines claim, like the waters around the Philippine island of Palawan. http://www.pri.org/stories/2012-02-08/sea-turtle-poaching-and-high-demand-china

The trend in catch rates, the authors of the assessment results maintain, indicates the need for take limits on this legal fishery. http://www.terradaily.com/reports/Declining_catch_rates_in_Caribbean_green_turtle_fishery_may_be_result_of_overfishing_999.html

                                  STOP SEA TURTLE FARMING

Pacific leatherback turtle, known for its arduous 6,000-mile ocean trek, faces extinction in 20 years | OUR OCEANS NEED US | Scoop.it

Feb 28, 2013:

The Pacific leatherback braves a transpacific journey that is one of the longest migrations in nature. Experts say its continued existence is imperiled by threats like climate change, plastic pollution, fishing methods, predation and human hunting The leatherback - the world's largest turtle - can grow to six feet long and weigh as much as 2,000 pounds (900 kg).

 be extinct in 20 years."

A study published this week in the Ecological Society of America's scientific journal Ecosphere estimates that only about 500 leatherbacks now nest at their last large nesting site in the Pacific, down from thousands previously. The study tracked the turtle's ongoing population decline since the 1980s.

The giant Pacific leatherback turtle, known for its arduous 6,000-mile ocean trek from the U.S. West Coast to breeding grounds in Indonesia, could go extinct within 20 years as its population continues to plummet, scientists say...

Sea turtles have been around about 100 million years and survived the extinction of the dinosaurs but are struggling to survive the impact of humans," said reproductive biologist Thane Wibbels of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), a member of a research team studying the fate of these reptiles. "If the decline continues, leatherback turtles will become extinct in the Pacific Ocean within 20 years," Wibbels said.http://planetark.org/wen/68042

▶ VAST METHANE 'PLUMES' SEEN IN ARCTIC OCEAN AS SEA ICE RETREATS. Dramatic and unprecedented plumes of methane -

A GREENHOUSE GAS 20 TIMES MORE POTENT THAN CARBON DIOXIDE  - have been seen bubbling to the surface of the Arctic Ocean by scientists undertaking an extensive survey of the region.... it’s strongly reminiscent of what is probably the worst possible climate scenario imaginable, a feedback loop so humongous and destructive that it would lead to runaway warming that makes today's runaway warming look tame by comparison. The last time this happened, it poisoned 90 percent of all life on earth with hydrogen sulfide gas, in a process described by paleontologist Peter Ward as "life killing itself off."... http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/vast-methane-plumes-seen-in-arctic-ocean-as-sea-ice-retreats-6276278.html

-▶ OCEAN BOTTOMLINER:  WHY IS FMR. NEW YORK MAYOR, MIKE BLOOMBERG INVESTING $53 MILLION IN FISH? http://grist.org/food/ocean-bottomliner-why-mike-bloomberg-is-investing-in-fish/

 -▶ THE VIBRANT OCEANS INITIATIVE

The Bloomberg Philanthropies Vibrant Oceans Initiative supports a groundbreaking approach to reform both local and industrial fishing simultaneously. Our approach integrates financial strategies to ease the transition to more sustainable fishing.

THE DEMAND FOR FISH IS RISING WHILE THE SUPPLY IS RAPIDLY DECLINING

One billion people rely on fish as their primary source of protein. As the world’s population continues to grow, so will the demand for fish – which is projected to rise by over 20% by the year 2030. Meanwhile, over-fishing, or taking more fish than can be naturally replaced, is depleting the global population of fish. The amount of fish caught worldwide peaked in the 1990s and has since declined.

Industrial ships are able to catch two times more fish than exist in the ocean. Bottom-trawling, or dragging a heavy net along the ocean floor, in some cases discards 10 lbs of marine life (dead or dying) for every 1 lb of marine life caught. Other dangerous practices include dynamite and cyanide fishing, which damage coral reefs.Limits on the number of fish that can be caught are set too high in many places or do not exist at all, diminishing fish stocks and not allowing fish to repopulate.

The good news is that marine ecosystems can rebound relatively quickly if caught in time. The factors that led to mismanagement must be addressed now in order to replenish fish populations and to help meet the dietary needs of a growing global population....

THE LOSS OF OCEAN SPECIES IS STAGGERING

-▶ Humans have gained unprecedented supremacy over the seas in a short space of time, thanks to potent technological advances such as satellite tracking devices and engines so formidable they can drag nets big enough to engulf a cathedral. Add in the impact of pollution, from the likes of fertiliser run-off or discarded plastic, and the oceans have changed more in the past 30 years than in all of human history.

In most places, the oceans have lost more than 75 per cent of their “megafauna” – large creatures such as whales, sharks, dolphins, rays and turtles. Numbers of some species – oceanic whitetip sharks; American sawfish – are down by as much as 99 per cent. For every 20 leatherback turtles in the Pacific 50 years ago, only one remains...http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/9601c144-9dcd-11e1-838c-00144feabdc0.html#axzz1vqzpHIBt

We Love You, Manatees - Dying in Record Numbers

We Love You, Manatees - Dying in Record Numbers | OUR OCEANS NEED US | Scoop.it

                                                    MANATEES

                            National Geographic, April 2013 Issue

Weighing up to 1,200 pounds or more, the West Indian manatee looks something like a chubby dolphin or small whale, though it’s related to neither. (In fact, manatees share a common ancestor with elephants.) Manatees lack the blubber layer that allows whales to tolerate cold; in water below 68°F, they begin to weaken and die. The subspecies found in the United States is the Florida manatee, which disperses into coastal areas of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico; in winter, when sea temperatures drop, they congregate inland at natural springs and other sources of warmth, including power plant discharge pipes.... http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2013/04/manatees/white-text
