The local government of Newtown Borough recently reached a stalemate regarding a design dispute at a historic hotel.
The Mayor broke a tie vote to officially reject a permanent entrance canopy installed by the new owners of Donatelli’s Italian Steakhouse.
While the Historic Architecture Review Board argued the structure overshadowed the building’s heritage, some council members and residents praised the modern upgrades and improved guest comfort.
Supporters of the business emphasized the economic investment made in the property, but critics maintained that the canopy disrupted the traditional streetscape.
Consequently, the owners must now modify or remove the fixture to comply with local preservation standards.
