Mickael Ruau's insight:
Usual MySQL build prerequisites:Unix: compiler and make utility, curses dev package on LinuxWindows: Visual Studio (Express version okay)Mac OS X: Xcode toolsEverywhere: bison, unless you're building from source package where bison output is already packed. On OpenSolaris/Solaris Express you would need to install m4 in addition to bison. NOTE: On Windows install bison into path without spaces, not into default location. Reason : this bug in bison 2.4.1CMake version 2.6.3 or later installed on your system.

How to Backup Databases Using mysqldump Tool

In this tutorial, you will learn how to backup MySQL databases by using mysqldump tool provided by MySQL.
Mickael Ruau's insight:

MySQL GUI tools such as phpMyAdmin, SQLyog and etc often provide features for backup MySQL databases with ease. However if your database is big, the backup process could be very slow because the backup file need to be transferred across the network to your client PC. As the result, the backup process increases locking time therefore MySQL unavailability.

Karlsson on databases and stuff: Character sets, Collations, UTF-8 and all that

Karlsson on databases and stuff: Character sets, Collations, UTF-8 and all that | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it

Yesterday at the first Swedish MySQL User Group real meeting here in Stockholm, I presented a talk on character sets, collations and stuff like that. If you read this blog, you know that I have written about this before, but the presentation I did yesterday was a fair bit more detailed. You can view the full presentation on slideshare

Mickael Ruau's insight:

Let me take an example. You would think think that using a UNIQUE or PRIMARY KEY on a text-based column (using something like a VARCHAR or CHAR type) in a table would ensure that any two strings are unique, but that two strings values that are different may coexist in two different rows. Think again.

Karlsson on databases and stuff: Using 4-byte UTF-8 (aka 3-byte UNICODE) in MariaDB and MySQL

Karlsson on databases and stuff: Using 4-byte UTF-8 (aka 3-byte UNICODE) in MariaDB and MySQL | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it

As I wrote in a previous post, MariaDB / MySQL has some issues with the standard UTF-8 encoding there. This UTF-8 encoding limits us to 3 UTF-8 bytes or 2 UNICODE bytes if you want to look at it that way. This is slightly limiting, but for languages it is usually pretty much OK, although there are some little used languages in the 3 byte UNICODE range. But in addition to languages, you will be missing symbols, such as smileys!

Mickael Ruau's insight:

Help is on the way though, in the utf8mb4 character set that is part of both MariaDB and MySQL. This is a character set that is just like the one just called utf8, except this one accepts all the UNICODE characters with up to 3 UNICODE bytes, or 4 bytes using the UTF-8 encoding.

This means that there are more limits to how long a column might be when using utf8mb4 compared to latin1 and even when compared to utf8. Let's try it

MySQL :: MySQL 5.7 Reference Manual :: 8 Optimization

MySQL :: MySQL 5.7 Reference Manual :: 8 Optimization | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it

This chapter explains how to optimize MySQL performance and provides examples. Optimization involves configuring, tuning, and measuring performance, at several levels.

Mickael Ruau's insight:

Depending on your job role (developer, DBA, or a combination of both), you might optimize at the level of individual SQL statements, entire applications, a single database server, or multiple networked database servers. Sometimes you can be proactive and plan in advance for performance, while other times you might troubleshoot a configuration or code issue after a problem occurs. Optimizing CPU and memory usage can also improve scalability, allowing the database to handle more load without slowing down.

Creating Updateable Views

Creating Updateable Views | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it
Views are not only read-only but also updateable. in this tutorial, you will learn how to create updateable views.
Mickael Ruau's insight:

In MySQL, views are not only read-only but also updateable. However in order to create an updateable view, the SELECT statement that defines the view has to follow several following rules:

The SELECT statement must only refer to one database table. The SELECT statement must not use GROUP BY or HAVING clause. The SELECT statement must not use DISTINCT in the column list of the SELECT clause. The SELECT statement must not refer to read-only views. The SELECT statement must not contain any expression (aggregates, functions, computed columns…)

When you create updateable views, make sure that you follow the rules above.

MySQL Compare Two Tables to Find Unmatched Records

MySQL Compare Two Tables to Find Unmatched Records | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it
In this tutorial, you will learn how to compare two tables to find unmatched records in MySQL.
Mickael Ruau's insight:

In data migration, we often have to compare two tables and identify a record in one table that have no corresponding record in another table.

For example, we have a new database whose schema is different from the legacy database. Our task is to migrate all data from the legacy database to the new one and verify that the data were migrated correctly. In order to check the data, we have to compare two tables, one in the new database and one in the legacy database, and identity the unmatched records.

Karlsson on databases and stuff: How MariaDB and MySQL makes life with UTF-8 a bit too easy. And how to fix it... | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it

UNICODE is getting more and more traction and most new applications, at least web applications, support UNICODE. I have written about UNICODE and related stuff before in Character sets, Collations, UTF-8 and all that but before I go into some more specific and some issues, and fixes, let me tell you about UNICODE, UTF-8 and how MySQL interprets it. See the blogpost linked to above for more information on the subject, surprisingly even more boring, on Collations.

Mickael Ruau's insight:

So, then we know UNICODE; what is UTF-8, UTF-16 and all that? Those are ways to represent the bytes that make up UNICODE. The smartest, and most common, of these, by far, is UTF-8. To represent the highest byte-value of a UNICODE character, you would need 3 bytes for every character, but this is wasting space. Also, this would mean that all old program code that assumes that a character is 1 byte only (with 7 bits representing the good old US ASCII characters, but there are local variations of this, or interpreting up to 8 bits as latin1). Ken Thompson fixed this for us though with the UTF-8 representation.
