This is a comparison between the two primary database engines (InnoDB and MyISAM) for the MySQL database management system (DBMS). A database engine (or "storage engine") is the underlying software component that a DBMS uses to create, read, update and delete (CRUD) data from a database.

Aria is a storage engine for the MariaDB and MySQL relational database management systems. Its goal is to make a crash-safe alternative to MyISAM. It is not yet transactional but plans to add proper support for database transactions at some point in the future. The long-term goal is for Aria to be the default transactional and non-transactional storage engine for MySQL. It has been in development since 2007 and was first announced by Michael "Monty" Widenius on his blog.[1] Aria is used for internal temporary tables in MariaDB, a community-developed branch of the MySQL database led by Widenius, and is also included in Percona Server. MySQL is not shipped with MariaDB.
The Maria project is hosted on Launchpad.
Aria was initially named 'Maria', as a reference to Monty's youngest child.[2] It was renamed Aria in 2010 to avoid confusion with the main database it is developed for (MariaDB).[3]

Calpont is a database management software company based in Frisco, TX. Calpont makes InfiniDB, a scalable, software-only columnar database[1] for analytic applications.[2] InfiniDB has been selected as finalist in the Best Database Solution category at the 26th and 27th SIIA Annual CODiE Awards.[3][4]
InfiniDB Enterprise is a scalable database built for Big Data analytics, business intelligence, data warehousing and other read-intensive applications.[3] InfiniDB's column-store architecture enables very quick load and query times.[5] Its massive parallel processing (MPP) technology scales linearly with any type of storage hardware,[6] growing as analytic needs and data volumes grow.
By storing and managing data based on columns rather than rows, column-oriented architecture overcomes query limitations that exist in traditional row-based RDBMS. Only the necessary columns in a query are accessed, reducing I/O activities by circumventing unneeded rows.[7] This enables it to[clarification needed] with very large data volumes (Terabytes to Petabytes), commonly referred to as Big Data.
