Failure of remyelination in diseases, such as multiple sclerosis (MS), leads to permanent axonal damage and irreversible functional loss. The mechanisms controlling remyelination are currently poorly understood. Recent studies implicate the cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (Cdk5) in regulating oligodendrocyte (OL) development and myelination in CNS. In this study, we show that Cdk5 is also an important regulator of remyelination.
I found a quote about depression the other day while browsing the Internet. I would like to share it with you all. I tried to find the author, but my search was in vain. I felt that it was necessary to touch on such a delicate topic because there has been such an outburst about depression due to celebrity deaths, and also because this week marks the anniversary of my own brother’s death which has caused my problems with depression to be more prevalent. “Depression is such a cruel punishment. There are no fevers, no rashes, no blood tests to …
I had near perfect vision before the onset of Multiple Sclerosis. A dramatic dietary change is improving my eyesight and proving that the visual problems are neurological rather than optical.

The study led by Dr Anne La Flamme, an associate professor in the School of Biological Sciences and head of the MS research programme at the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research, based at Victoria, shows the potential of clozapine andrisperidone to effectively treat MS.
Peptides naturally produced by parasitic intestinal worms could help treat auto-immune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis, say researchers at Monash University.
Finding a cure for MS is a cause very dear to Shemar Moore’s heart, and for those living with MS the lack of a cure is a frustrating and scary reality.
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society (US) describes the disease as a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system (CNS), which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves.
Before anyone starts saying that they don't want HIV, the article hasn't stated that only having HIV reduces MS but rather it may be the therapy as well as they noticed HIV-infected individuals on a treatment plan benefit from the lower rate of MS. People in high-risk MSM demographics or in serodiscordant relationships take HIV antiretrovirals as a pre-exposure prophylaxis to prevent acquiring the infection. It's possible that the medication itself has the protective effects and you don't need HIV to take them!...
I remember when I was first diagnosed with MS and Rebif had recently been approved. Prior to that the disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) were known as the ABCs, short for Avonex, Betaseron, Copaxone. When Rebif joined the arsenal, the DMT nomenclature became the CRABs for Copaxone, Rebif, Avonex, Betaseron. Now with 11 drugs available, perhaps someone could come up with a clever and memorable mnemonic to accommodate the various options

A new study identifies a novel gene, Inpp4b, that controls nerve conduction velocity. Investigators report that even minor reductions in conduction velocity may aggravate disease in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and in mice bred for the MS-like condition experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE).
Numerous risk factors are believed to contribute to the development of autoimmune disorders such as multiple sclerosis, and new research is focusing on the role that bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract as well as other cell stress-related chemical signals could have in stimulating inflammation in the central nervous system and activating immunostimulatory cytokines. Two comprehensive Review articles are part of a focus on "Cytokines in Neuroinflammation and Immunity" in a special issue of Journal of Interferon & Cytokine Research (JICR)*, a peer-reviewed publication from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers. The articles are available free on the JICR website.
