"Cost pressures raise concerns for agriculture. The coming weeks are expected to be challenging for Italian farms, with several cost indicators once again moving in the same direction. The risk is a further squeeze on agricultural margins, driven by rising energy, diesel and fertiliser costs, compounded by possible upward pressure on feed costs."

Egyptian wheat import has dropped sharply in August and is expected to decrease further in September, as rising wheat prices outpaced flour values, undermining margins for mills producing flour for re-export. Ukrainian 11.5% wheat in coaster parties is now offered at around 300-305 USD/MT CIF Egypt, roughly 40-45 USD/MT above month-ago levels.

Türkiye’s wheat flour exports fell to 1.19 million tonnes and $438.2 million in the first seven months of 2026. A 187,500-tonne contraction in shipments to Iraq weighed heavily on the overall result, while growth in Syria, Ghana, Somalia, Cuba and Eritrea partly offset the loss.

Russia’s attempt to divert grain exports north as its traditional Azov–Black Sea routes struggle is facing a new constraint. Estonia has warned that it will not allow its ports to become an alternative gateway for Russian grain, while Latvia is moving towards steep tariffs and tighter controls. The emerging Baltic resistance threatens to narrow Moscow’s logistics options just as export forecasts are being cut sharply.

As attacks on commercial vessels and port infrastructure spread across the Black Sea, grain companies are being forced to reconsider how contracts allocate war risk, delay, demurrage, insurance gaps and the cost of failed execution. Legal, shipping and insurance specialists warn that standard wording alone may no longer provide adequate protection in a conflict where conditions can change between vessel nomination and loading.

The USDA has cut its 2026/27 wheat export forecasts for Russia by 3 million tonnes to 43 million tonnes and for Ukraine by 1 million tonnes to 12.5 million tonnes as war-related disruption slows Black Sea shipments. Despite these cuts, improved crop prospects lifted global wheat supplies to 1.103 billion tonnes and ending stocks to 276.3 million tonnes, while projected world trade was reduced to 211.8 million tonnes.

Ukraine has enough storage to absorb a temporary export slowdown, but the greater danger lies beyond the current harvest. With around 98% of the country’s wheat grown as a winter crop, prolonged port disruption, rising logistics costs and weakening farmgate margins could deprive farmers of the liquidity needed for autumn planting, turning today’s transport crisis into a supply problem for 2027.

Persistent heat and drought are expected to cut EU wheat and coarse grain production to 264.8 million tonnes in 2026/27, 8% below last season. Maize is bearing the brunt of the losses, with output forecast to fall to its lowest level since 2007/08, increasing the bloc’s dependence on imports.
