Egypt is targeting self-sufficiency in wheat production by 75 percent by the end of 2017, Agriculture Minister Adel al-Beltagy said Saturday. The minister, in press statements, said the accomplishment of this target relies on the implementation of a set of sound practices that can lead to increased production and reduce losses. He said th

Algeria's wheat import needs may hit a record high, at a time of poor quality supplies from its default origin, France, raising questions over where the country will source its needs. The North African country will import 7.5m tonnes of wheat in 2014-15, cementing its place as the world's second ranked buyer of the grain after Egypt, the US Department of Agriculture ureau in Algiers said. The figure is 1.5m tonnes above the USDA's official forecast for Algeria's purchases, and ahead too of the record set in 2013-14, reflecting a drought-hit harvest, which the bureau pegged at a six-year low of 1.8m tonnes. The decrease in production is mainly due to the drought-affected provinces in eastern Algeria," the main production region which suffered a rain shortfall for a second successive growing season.

As the news seems to be improving in the Black Sea Region Monday, most of last week's wheat prices seem to drift downward into new contract lows, on Friday headline of another Ukraine/Russia scuffle. It’s a story that just doesn’t go away, the geo-political strife in a major grain producing and exporting region. While the conflict has little to do with grain production, it is certainly affecting the world grain markets. At least enough to spook the bears, particularly when the grain markets have

Egypt's Gasc bought its first French wheat at tender in nearly eight months, as offers from Russia, which has started strongly on its 2014-15 export campaign, rose out of competitiveness. Gasc, the grain authority for the world's top wheat importing country, bought 60,000 tonnes of French wheat, its first purchase since January from the European Union's top producer, whose export prospects this season have been clouded by rain damage to the quality of its harvest. The purchase reflected a drop in the offer price to $240.40 a tonne, enough easily to undercut rival offers of Romanian and Russian supplies even allowing for the extra shipping cost to Egypt from France rather than from the Black Sea. Indeed, the cheapest Russian offer was at $251.95 a tonne, from Noble, excluding freight. All five cargos of French wheat offered were priced below $249 a tonne. The last wheat Gasc bought from France, in January, was priced at $278 a tonne.

Egyptian Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab said on Saturday the government planned to buy local wheat from farmers "at a fair price no lower than last year," in comments broadcast by state television. The government purchased wheat for 420 Egyptian pounds ($58.74) per ardeb (150 kg) in the most recent harvest season which ended in June. Egypt pays domestic farmers more than $100 per tonne above the world market price for their wheat to encourage sales to the state.

According to the EC’s agricultural trade report for 2013, growth in EU exports of agricultural products slowed down to 5.8% in 2013, compared to 12% in 2012 and 17% in 2011. Nevertheless, with €120 billion in exports, the EU28 remained the world’s leading agro-food product exporter.Despite the strength of the euro and modest overall growth in world trade, EU exports were “stimulated by demand for particular commodities in developing countries”. In general, final products for direct consumptio...
