(FAO) "This publication sheds light on the unique opportunities and challenges in transforming agrifood systems in the Mediterranean, a goal that is central to achieving sustainable development across the region and worldwide."
The SOFA Report by FAO has just been released. The value of agrifood systems is not in doubt. They provide nourishment, sustain economies and shape cultural identities. However, one must also consider the environmental, social and health hidden costs associated with these systems.
The global food price index of the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) made headlines when it reached its all-time record in March. And rightly so, as it suggested an increasingly difficult situation for food security globally, particularly for lower-income consumers who already struggle to afford healthy food and for humanitarian programs challenged to feed a growing number of people facing crisis-level hunger.
The third independent Food Systems Summit Dialogue for the Mediterranean Region (SFS MED dialogue) organised by the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), the One Planet Network’s Sustainable Food Systems Programme (OPN-SFSP) and the Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA) Foundation, took place on 9 December 2021. It was the third one after the independent Dialogues held in April and June 2021.
On top of a decade of exacerbated disaster loss, exceptional global heat, retreating ice and rising sea levels, humanity and our food security face a range of new and unprecedented hazards, such as megafires, extreme weather events, desert locust swarms of magnitudes previously unseen, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Agriculture underpins the livelihoods of over 2.5 billion people – most of them in low-income developing countries – and remains a key driver of development.
An increase in food prices following the coronavirus pandemic has intensified concerns related to global food security. For emerging markets, this has further underlined the importance of regional cooperation and innovative solutions to help overcome the challenges.
Sustainable Food Systems in the Mediterranean: Accelerating progress on the 2030 Agenda in the COVID19 Context.
A side-event of the 3rd Global Conference of the One Planet Network (10YFP) Sustainable Food Systems Programme (25 Nov- 3 Dec 2020), designed as an interactive web-dialogue to discuss the need for a collaborative effort to accelerate a food systems transformation in the Mediterranean region, in the COVID-19 context.
This year, the report includes a special focus on transforming food systems for affordable healthy diets. It analyses the cost and affordability of healthy diets around the world, by region and in different development contexts. New analysis is presented on the “hidden” health and climate-change costs associated with our current food consumption patterns, as well as the cost savings if we shift towards healthy diets that include sustainability considerations. The report also offers policy recommendations to transform current food systems and make them able to deliver affordable healthy diets for all – crucial to all efforts to achieve Zero Hunger – SDG2.
Health-related costs account for a significant part of the hidden costs of the EU agri-food system, an official of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) explained to Euractiv presenting the results of the UN agency's latest report on the matter.

Our overarching goal for this event is to highlight the crucial role of food and agriculture in addressing the climate crisis, both domestically and internationally.
Loss in food production increases prices; that, in turn, influences people’s food intake and fuels conflicts. The year is coming to an end. With the rise of the new Omicron variant, the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic is nowhere near closure. The other existential crisis — climate change — has continued too with record-shattering milestones. In early December, another rude shock was delivered, which impacts us all — FAO reiterated climate change’s role in jacking up food prices. The rise impacts the world’s poor even more because the pandemic has already pushed millions into the poverty trap and every third person in the world is not able to have adequate food. The average food prices (after adjusting for inflation) in the 11 months of 2021 are the highest in 46 years, said FAO.
The UN Secretary-General has called for a Food Systems Summit to unleash the power of food and deliver progress on all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). During preparatory summit dialogues, diverse stakeholders are invited to identify ways and actions to make food systems more sustainable. The CIHEAM; the FAO; the UfMs; the UN One Planet Network Sustainable Food Systems Programme and the PRIMA Foundation, are co-organising two Food Systems Summit Dialogues ( 27 April and 3 June 2021) aiming at advancing a common understanding of the complex environment of Sustainable Food Systems in the Mediterranean region (SFS MED).
This Food Systems Summit Dialogue will be the first of two, aiming at advancing a common understanding of the complex environment of Sustainable Food Systems (SFS) in the Mediterranean region. This will foster an inclusive discussion on future pathways for sustainable food systems in the Mediterranean, and commitments towards supporting their transformation, ultimately advancing progress on the 2030 Agenda in the region.
