At our “Meet the Teacher” night back in August, several students raced into the library to tell me about project ideas that they dreamed up over the summer. As soon as I heard their enthusiasm, I knew that one of my library goals, “To empower student voice”, was going to be an important one for this school year. One student shared about his idea to design his own Skylanders and 3D print them. Another wanted to create a set of model trains on the 3D printer. Another wanted to explore the MaKey MaKey. and program things. I told them all that we would figure out how to make this happen this year, but I needed some time to get the library going.
Conceived as a model for the library of the future, The Edge, launched by State Library of Queensland (SLQ) in 2010, is at the forefront of re-imagining libraries for the 21st century. With a mandate to empower Queenslanders to explore creativity across art, science, technology, and enterprise, The Edge is a visionary space for ‘creating creatives’; a melting pot of ideas and innovation, capacity-building, experimentation and innovation.
In December 2013, Vitrine technologie-éducation (VTÉ) convinced Cégep Bois-de-Boulogne to explore Fab Labs’ pedagogical potential in postsecondary education. Done deal! EchoFab, the first Fab Lab in Québec, is ready to be the trendsetter for an entire new way of looking at technology. Attracted by this idea, Champlain College St-Lambert management has recently decided to work with VTÉ on this exciting project.

Asks: "We’re in a period where almost anyone has the tools to make almost anything – but are we making the right things? Or too many of the wrong ones?"
Great post from Audrey Watters, who argues that "thanks to the move online and to digital, we'll now be able to do something "different" in our face-to-face learning environments ... we can make a case for physical learning spaces -- for better, beautiful learning spaces."
"the makerspace takes a more public-facing, more community-oriented form than we've seen with individual DIY hobbyists or small hobby groups ... [it] brings them out into the open, into the public to share and to learn together. ... much of what we see in the Maker Movement is the joy of learning -- lifelong learning -- in informal rather than formal environments."
From the About page: "MakerBridge is an online community for everyone interested in makerspaces and maker culture, including those working in makerspaces within libraries, community centers, and schools. This community is intended to build a bridge that brings people together so they can collaborate and learn from each other’s experiences. This network can be a valuable resource for anyone trying to plan or run a makerspace in a library, a school, or any other dedicated makerspace location--or even individuals who just enjoy tinkering and creating."
Innovative librarians are creating makerspaces and STEAM programs for children and youth. The Connected Learning Alliance (CLA) will develop an open online course and professional network for all librarians to learn from these innovators, build their own programs, and make STEAM opportunities available to underserved youth.
The CLA will partner with the Los Angeles Public Library’s science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) experts, the LA Makerspace. We will model our course on Connected Courses, a successful professional development network for innovative faculty. Through webinars, twitter chats, and syndicated blogs, Connected Courses for Librarians will provide professional development for librarians in STEAM areas.
Very exciting to see the development of an open online course and professional network for librarians leading the charge on makerspaces and STEAM programs.

This sounds fun! The experimental theme of the popup makerspace was, “Whose Hand Am I Holding Anyway?” It involved casting hands in plaster and then creating silicon proxies of the hands which were embedded with sensors. An Arduino sketch was written to not only log when the sensors were triggered but also display messages via a serial readout. "Conference participants could shake hands with these rather defamiliarizing proxies, an often amusing encounter that was immediately confirmed on a screen in the space. The handshake data was then logged so that we’d know, by the conference’s conclusion, how many people the proxies had “met.”
Just like his beloved grandfather, Avi Reichental is a maker of things. The difference is, now he can use 3D printers to make almost anything, out of almost any material. Reichental tours us through the possibilities of 3D printing, for everything from printed candy to highly custom sneakers.
Makerspaces are a big trend in libraries right now. That's a good thing because they do offer new ways of supporting critical 21st century skills (e.g. critical thinking, problem solving, digital l...
From Stacks to Hacks: Makerspaces and LibraryBox : The makerspace movement is gaining momentum in the library world. In his recent report on “Libraries and the informational future: some notes,” Lorcan Dempsey of OCLC noted how “space is being reconfigured around broader education and research needs, and less around the management of print collection. In effect, space is ... METRO Articles and White Papers for METRO New York, NY US
The author notes how makerspaces reorient the library towards "greater user engagement, collaborative creative activity, and participatory learning". the library becomes a "locus of community involvement, innovative forms of service and instruction, and as laboratories of ideas and invention".
Bryan Bishop: "Virtual reality company Oculus has been building momentum since it launched the Kickstarter campaign for its Oculus Rift headset two years ago. At its developer conference Saturday, it launched its latest prototype — while filmmakers made a convincing argument that VR is the dawn of a completely new form of visual storytelling."
Recent prototype headsets offer great promise for narrative experience but can they also support the social side of entertainment? Most entertainment--from gaming to films--is a shared experience physically as well as across social media.
The concept of libraries as makerspaces first hit my radar last November when I read about the Fayetteville Free Library's FabLab. As I began hearing more buzz about libraries and makerspaces the ...
The MakerLab team at uVic have developed DIY kits around historically relevant technologies, including wearables, wire recorders, and videogames. "The kits afford a form of tacit engagement that encourages audiences to reassemble historical technologies using current materials in order to better understand the material relationships between culture and media".
We’ve known Ian Charnas as part of a team that built the wonderfully whimsical Waterfall Swing, which you may have seen at Maker Faire, on “The Today Show”, or on the roof of a museum in Linz, Austria.
But Ian’s day job is welcoming about 3,000 visitors a month to through the doors of think[box] at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. At MakerCon today, he shared some of the strategies he uses as the manager of this makerspace that is free and open to members of the community: not just the faculty, students, and staff of Case Western, but everyone who needs to make in greater Cleveland. Wow!
