Today, I finally signed the contract as Principal Investigator of the @CICS.Nova Research Chair in Tourism, Leisure and Urban Dynamics at NOVA FCSH. After nine years as a postdoctoral fellow and six years as Principal Investigator of the Scientific Employment Stimulus Programme in Portugal, this is the first time, at the age of 47, that I have signed a (supposedly) permanent contract. This is not luck (as many people tend to say): it is the result of many years of working much more than eight hours a day, including weekends and holidays, and trying by all means to secure scientific employment for the younger colleagues of my LXNights Research Group through research project proposals, etc. As this position as FCT-Tenure Principal Investigator is publicly funded, the Portuguese people deserve to know at least the essential points of my short-, medium- and long-term objectives:

1. To Keep on developing theoretical and empirical knowledge on nighttime tourism destinations, especially in relation to global change;
2. To strengthen my leadership at world level in the interdisciplinary field of ‘night studies’.
3. To continue to develop the 5 new research lines in the interdisciplinary intersection between tourism studies, leisure studies and regional & urban studies I’ve opened up over the last five years, namely:
3.1.. The spatial, social and heritage impacts derived from the touristification of nightlife (see first article in Urban Geography, 2021);
3.2. The biosecuritization of the Tourist city and its nightlife (see first article in ACME: An International Journal for Critical Geographies, 2023);
3.3. The future ‘greening’ of the nightlife industry (see first article in World Leisure Journal, 2023);
3.4. Nightlife as source of socioemotional wellbeing and common good (see first article in Annals of Leisure Research, 2023);
3.5. The design of the nocturnal 15-minute city, including nocturnal 15-min tourism destinations (see first article in Urban Geography, 2024);
4. To reinforce the attraction of research funding by designing, drafting and submitting as PI 1 research project every two years (national agencies: Portuguese Foundation for Science & Technology; international agencies: ERC AdG, Horizon, NEB, COST Action);
5. To Maintain a significant number of Q1 scientific publications per year, equally respecting Open Access Science mandates;
6. Mantain NOVA FCSH as Host Institution of my LXNIGHTS Research Group, as Co-Host Institution of the International Night Studies Network.

To all nightologists, you know you can count on me, my research centre (CICS.NOVA - Interdisciplinary Center of Social Sciences) and my faculty (NOVA FCSH) for research stays, collaborating on academic initiatives and even participating in the absolute madness of designing a research project proposal 🤩

The night will always be ours 🙂 | 17 comments on LinkedIn

Darkness Restoration is an Economic Multiplier | Annette Krop-Benesch

Darkness Restoration is an Economic Multiplier | Annette Krop-Benesch | LIGHTING-Innovation-Design | Scoop.it
We need to stop seeing darkness as backward. Natural darkness has many values. It brings beauty, contemplation, awe - and obviously financial benefits. It's not only a matter of energy saving.

Natural darkness is vital for healthy sleep, and sleep issues have a huge negative financial impact on our societies due to reduced productivity and direct health costs. But we also need darkness to protect our environment and green spaces are important for human health, especially in cities.

The interest in dark sky tourism is growing, so is the number of dark sky places worldwide. People want natural darkness, with well planned light in places and at times where they belong, not everywhere and always.

Let's stop seeing darkness as a bad thing but recognise its value. Natural darkness is precious. Let's keep that treasure.

Light and noise pollution are growing #environmental issues and recognised threats to biodiversity. Yet, they often receive far less attention than they deserve.

As part of the PLAN-B Project, we are conducting a survey to better understand public attitudes towards light and noise pollution, how they compare to other environmental challenges, and how acceptable different mitigation measures might be.

This online #survey forms part of a wider study exploring the social and psychological factors influencing these issues. It is led by our colleagues Michael Lomas PhD and Graeme Sherriff from The University of Salford, and takes approximately 15 minutes to complete.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐲𝐨𝐮?

We kindly invite you to take part. Every response matters, and your insights will help us understand how people perceive light and noise pollution and what actions might be needed to address them.

How do these forms of pollution affect you?
What changes should be made?
What would you support?

𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐮𝐬!

Take part in the survey and be in with a chance to win €50!

LEDs lack key wavelengths for human health | Martin Moore-Ede posted on the topic | LinkedIn

LEDs lack key wavelengths for human health | Martin Moore-Ede posted on the topic | LinkedIn | LIGHTING-Innovation-Design | Scoop.it
The key wavelengths for human health are missing from most LEDs. In the race to provide the cheapest brightness (maximum lumens per watt), conventional LEDs fail to provide the vital 380 nm, 430 nm & 480 nm wavelengths that stimulate the non-visual opsins (light-sensitive proteins) in the eye essential for good health.

As explained in my Substack article https://lnkd.in/eTq4e42C our eyes were
designed to see light at:
~380 nm (Opsin 5: eye develop, myopia prevent & glucose regulation)
~430 nm (Opsin 3: eye development & glucose regulation)
~480 nm (Opsin 4: Melanopsin - circadian rhythm synchronization)

and our bodies were designed to absorb infrared light at:
~825 nm (direct stimulation of mitochondrial energy production)

Modern LEDs may do a good job of stimulating the Visual Opsins 1 (Color vision) & 2 (Rhodopsin night vision).

But they totally fail at providing light at the critical wavelengths essential for health.

It is time that LED manufacturers realize that light is not just about vision, it is also essential for health.

At first, it looks like a random pattern of lights: the United States glowing proudly from coast to coast.

But look closer.

There’s a line.

A straight, invisible divide cutting the country in two.

To the east: dense cities, farms, humidity, and growth.
To the west: dry lands, sparse lights, and silence.

That line isn’t political or cultural: it’s natural.

The 100th meridian, where the humid east meets the arid west.
Where agriculture once stopped, and survival changed shape.

Light pollution here becomes a climate map drawn by human hands: proof that even our chaos follows the rules of nature.

This is part of my Tuesday mini-series, exploring how our artificial light reveals the deepest patterns of life, wealth, and geography on Earth.

Light pollution is destructive. Yet, paradoxically, it tells the story of who we are. And while it offers us this anthropological lens, we must still fight it , for our health, our ecosystems, and our future.

💡 I’m available for lectures, webinars or talks on light, the human body, Human Centric Lighting, sustainability and yes, even light pollution.
If you’d like to explore these topics outside the usual clichés, feel free to contact me.

A powerful new New York Times feature explores the growing movement to protect the extraordinary night skies over Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

The article highlights the grassroots Right to Night campaign, which aims to overturn a Michigan law prohibiting the establishment of dark sky preserves on state land in the U.P., and the broader question of how communities can balance economic growth with the protection of ecosystems that depend on darkness.

DarkSky’s CEO and Executive Director, Ruskin Hartley, shares in the piece that natural darkness is as essential as clean air and water — and with responsible design and installation, dark sky conservation and quality lighting can coexist.

Widespread influence of artificial light at night on ecosystem metabolism | Nature Climate Change

Widespread influence of artificial light at night on ecosystem metabolism | Nature Climate Change | LIGHTING-Innovation-Design | Scoop.it
Artificial light pollution is increasing worldwide with pervasive effects on ecosystem structure and function, yet its influence on ecosystem metabolism remains largely unknown. Here we combine artificial light at night (ALAN) intensity metrics with eddy covariance observations across 86 sites in North America and Europe to show that ALAN indirectly decreases annual net ecosystem exchange by enhancing ecosystem respiration (Re). At half-hourly and daily scales, we detect consistent nonlinear interactions between ALAN and night duration, with Re increasing under higher ALAN and partially decoupling from gross primary production. At the annual scale, gross primary production shows no direct ALAN response and is instead influenced by the growing season length and urban proximity, whereas Re responds more strongly and consistently across timescales. Our findings show that ALAN disrupts the fundamental energetic constraints on ecosystem metabolism, warranting the inclusion of light pollution in global change and carbon–climate feedback assessments. The authors combine light intensity data with eddy covariance observations from 86 sites to show that artificial light at night increases ecosystem respiration and alters carbon exchange, with impacts shaped by diel cycles and seasonal dynamics.

Tired of an increasingly boring academy? Well, there is always hope (for the time...). If you want to participate in two initiatives that will shape the future of studies on nocturnal cities and nighttime tourism, I invite you to send your proposals to:

1) Call For Abstracts Proposals: "The Palgrave Handbook on Nocturnal Cities", edited by Dr. Manuel García Ruiz (ISCTE–IUL) & Dr. Jordi Nofre (NOVA FCSH)
https://lnkd.in/dMX6DyWz
This forthcoming volume (expected publication mid-2027) explores the multiple dimensions of nocturnal urban life—its atmospheres, economies, inequalities, and transformations. Extended deadline: 15 November 2025.

2) Call For Papers: Special Issue of Tourism Geographies (Q1) "After Dark – Exploring Nighttime Tourism in Tourism Geographies (Special Issue)". Guest Editors: Dr. Manuel García Ruiz (ISCTE–IUL) & Dr. Jordi Nofre (NOVA FCSH)
https://lnkd.in/dAkvyu3n
Tourism studies have long focused on daylight experiences — yet the night is increasingly becoming a vital space of touristic, cultural, and affective practices. From light festivals and open-air concerts to gastronomic trails, pilgrimages, queer nightlife, and stargazing, this special issue foregrounds the night as a crucial analytical lens for understanding contemporary tourism geographies. We invite contributions exploring: Cultural, creative, and event-based tourism after dark; Nocturnal atmospheres, rhythms, and affective practices; Governance, sustainability, and aesthetic economies of the night; Comparative and interdisciplinary approaches to nighttime tourism. Deadline: 15 November 2025
