New Counter-UAS System Launched

New Counter-UAS System Launched | LAD & C-UAS | Scoop.it
MBDA has launched Sky Warden, the company’s new flagship counter-drone system. Sky Warden provides a full counter-UAS (unmanned aerial systems) kill chain from detection through to neutralisation, and is designed to operate both as an integrated component of a layered air defence architecture, or as a stand-alone system.

Modern drone threats are varied and constantly evolving, with no single sensor that can met the protection requirements. Sky Warden addresses this by using a networked eco-system of constantly evolving sensors and effectors, drawn from MBDA’s wide experience in air defence and effects management, to match the threat.

The modular and scaleable system can effectively and appropriately neutralise all classes of drone threat, from small Class 1 micro-UAVs to large tactical UAVs, as well as other traditional air threats. At its core is a command and control (C2) system that co-ordinates the eco-system of sensors, soft-kill effectors, and hard-kill effectors to defend armed forces units or sensitive sites across a large protection perimeter.

Sky Warden utilises operationally-proven building blocks within a modular open architecture that can be adapted to end-user requirements or to plug and play emerging and future novel sensing and effector technologies. MBDA C-UAS solutions have already been successfully demonstrated to customers.

Eric Béranger, CEO of MBDA, commented: “As Europe’s leading air defence provider, MBDA is uniquely able to offer customers a proven, flexible and integrated C-UAS system. One that is available today, and can evolve into the future. Sky Warden embodies MBDA’s deep knowledge of the engagement process, systems integration, of all categories of effectors and their next evolutions, and of effects management in the air defence domain.”

Cerbair Counter UAV Solutions

Cerbair Counter UAV Solutions | LAD & C-UAS | Scoop.it
Since 2015, CERBAIR (BOOTH 07-A05) has based all its detection solutions on the analysis of the radiofrequency spectrum. Called HYDRA, it is a direction finding system with sensors that scan the electromagnetic spectrum for frequencies used by the communication protocols of commercial drones.

As soon as a signal is intercepted, HYDRA characterises it through comparison with a signature database and gives operators an azimuth of origin symbolised on the interface of a Command and Control (C2) centre. The device is coupled with MEDUSA, a specially designed jammer, actionable when the threat is clearly confirmed. This radio jamming cuts the communication link between the drone and its operator, thereby forcing the machine to land.

Finally, CHIMERA is the combination of these two systems for special forces (police, gendarmerie, army). Composed with three connected hardware items:

an antenna, located in the dedicated backpack
a digital C2 tablet attached to the front of the tactical vest
an effector

CHIMERA allows a single operator on a mission to detect and neutralise nefarious drones.
Reliability of Detection

“Our customers, such as French SWAT Unit (RAID) or the soccer team l’Olympique Lyonnais, reported an increasing number of false alarms in environments saturated with electromagnetic radiations” underlines Céline Craye, PhD – Lead Developer, recalling the origin of this unique feature on the market.

“The core of our detection is based on a mapping of the frequency / time space,” explains Pierre Dufour, RF Engineer, who carried out extensive research on deep packet inspection.

Craye added, “by performing a first detection, we identify the overall characteristics of the packets sent between the drone and the remote control (packet duration, bandwidth), then we apply a first filter on the entire spectrum to precisely isolate the potential packets emitted by a given model of drone. After this crucial step, ULTRA (Ultimate Recognition Algorithm) analyses the content of the packet to detect patterns of each communication protocol. If these indicators are present in the package, we can confirm with absolute certainty the nature of the drone.”

In short, ULTRA scrutinises both the interpulse data (the relative positions between the different transmitted packets) and the intrapulse data (data relating to a packet).
Unique Feature

“While developing this unique feature, we found out that the biggest challenge was to get the clearest signal possible. For several months, we analysed multiple recordings and carried out thousands of tests, both in our lab of Montrouge, and on the field in the outskirts of Paris” concluded Craye and Dufour.

Symbolised by a green pulse on the detection software, ULTRA is available on HYDRA 100/200 and the future HYDRA 300 (fixed or mobile).

ULTRA is already included in the latest release of the CHIMERA software. Unlike its competitors seeking ever more detection range, CERBAIR innovates by investing in more reliable detection, eliminating as much as possible false alarms which can generate costly and unnecessary actions for the user.

MBDA présente Sky Warden, un système anti-drones modulaire

MBDA présente Sky Warden, un système anti-drones modulaire | LAD & C-UAS | Scoop.it

L' US Air Force évalue un laser anti-drones mobile

L' US Air Force évalue un laser anti-drones mobile | LAD & C-UAS | Scoop.it

L’US Army attend ses DE-MSHORAD

Counter-Drone Technology Supports Remote ID

Counter-Drone Technology Supports Remote ID | LAD & C-UAS | Scoop.it
D-Fend Solutions has confirmed that its EnforceAir counter-small unmanned aerial systems (C-sUAS) technology supports the legislation rule recently passed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that requires remote identification for large categories of drones in the U.S. The technology is Remote ID-ready in the U.S., Europe and Asia.

EnforceAir offers a variety of identification capabilities including unique ID per serial number, accurate location information for the drone and ground station, and additional identification parameters. The system will provide customers with updated identification information following the adoption of the law by various drone manufacturers. System operators can see the remote IDs of detected drones via EnforceAir’s intuitive graphical user interface, offering law enforcement agencies and other organizations greater visibility and data.

Zohar Halachmi, Chairman and CEO of D-Fend Solutions, commented: “The entire drone ecosystem should benefit from the FAA’s rule, including drone manufacturers, who have a vested interest in ensuring that their products are not used for illegal purposes; law-abiding drone operators, who will be able to fly their drones over certain crowds and at night; and law enforcement personnel, who will obtain important information from leading counter-drone technologies about drones and operators involved in dangerous or hostile incidents.”

“D-Fend is honored that our technology has been tested, selected and trusted by top tier U.S. government agencies and we will continue to work with them to reduce the drone threat, while ensuring our continued system evolution includes the functionality required by new rulings.”

Michael Huerta, former Head of the FAA and current D-Fend Solutions’ Advisory Board Member, stated: “This new rule by my former colleagues at the FAA is an important step in better regulating drones in the United States. I strongly believe in D-Fend’s mission to support today’s drone-powered society by making it safer and more secure, which this rule and D-Fend’s technology will help facilitate.”

Russia Presents Integrated C-UAS System at IDEX 2021

Russia Presents Integrated C-UAS System at IDEX 2021 | LAD & C-UAS | Scoop.it
On February 22, 2021, at the IDEX 2021 International Defense Exhibition in Abu Dhabi, Rosoboronexport (part of Rostec State Corporation) held a public presentation “New Approaches to Building an Integrated Counter UAV System” at its stand in Hall 12.

The events of 2019 and 2020, when administrative and industrial facilities of a number of Middle Eastern countries were attacked, revealed new threats and security challenges. The lack of efforts made to provide air defense in the face of the growing use of unmanned aerial vehicles in fighting and a high level of terrorist threat has become obvious.

The great availability of drones and the possibility of acquiring them by various terrorist groups, as well as the experience of recent local wars and military conflicts, poses new challenges to the countries of the region and forces them to revise the existing air defense system, designed to protect against classical attack weapons.

As part of the presentation, Rosoboronexport will present its new package solution – a system capable of effectively countering attacks by unmanned aerial vehicles, combining electronic warfare and air defense systems of various classes.

UAV jamming systems are most effective against light- and partly medium-class drones. These assets are capable of countering a massive air raid by unmanned aerial vehicles by suppressing their command/telemetry and navigation channels.

The Repellent-Patrol EW system developed and manufactured by JSC Defense Systems provides zone coverage of the territories. The Repellant-Patrol is a long-range system capable of jamming drones at a range of up to 20 km.

The Kupol and Rubezh-Avtomatika systems developed by Avtomatika Concern, part of Rostec State Corporation, carry out continuous radio surveillance and create a protective dome over the installation. This is an impenetrable barrier capable of repelling attacks not only by single drones, but also their massive use from different directions and altitudes within a radius of at least 3 km.

The Pishchal electromagnetic gun is one of the lightest handheld jammers on the market, weighing a mere about 3.5 kg. It can jam UAV control/navigation channels at a range of 2 km.

Pishchal electro-magnetic gun

As a hard-kill component of its counter UAV system, Rosoboronexport offers short-range air defense systems, in particular, KBP’s Pantsir-S1M self-propelled anti-aircraft gun/missile (SPAAGM) system or Almaz-Antey’s Tor-type SAM system.

These systems are capable of effectively engaging a variety of air attack weapons, including UAVs. The Pantsir-S1M SPAAGM has missile and gun armament and destroys air targets at up to 30 km in range and up to 18 km in altitude. The Tor-M2E’s engagement envelope against air targets is 15 km in range and 10 km in altitude.

The ‘last-ditch’ air defense will be best provided by the Verba or Igla-S MANPADS, as well as the Gibka-S MANPADS squad combat vehicles, capable of firing Verba or Igla-S MANPADS. These MANPADS can destroy targets at a maximum range of 6 km and at a maximum altitude of 3.5 km.

The integrated use of the proposed electronic warfare and air defense assets will enable effective countermeasures against UAVs of any class provided air enemy reconnaissance and automated control systems are in place.

At IDEX 2021, all these systems will be showcased at Rosoboronexport and Almaz-Antey stands as part of a single Russian exhibit.

Traditionally, Rosoboronexport is ready to treat each foreign customer individually. During technical consultations, the company’s specialists can offer the optimal configuration of the system components for countering UAV threats depending on the customer’s needs and its vision of security threats to its infrastructure, transport, energy and military installations.

IDEX 2021: MBDA launches Sky Warden C-UAS system

IDEX 2021: MBDA launches Sky Warden C-UAS system | LAD & C-UAS | Scoop.it
The Sky Warden system manages the full C-UAS kill chain from detection to neutralisation and is designed to operate both as an integrated component in a layered air defence architecture, or in a stand-alone configuration. Sky Warden can be vehicle mounted or dismounted.

The modern C-UAS threat is varied, rapidly evolving, and poses a multiplying number of complex scenarios that require defending against. This means there is no single sensor or effector that can meet the modern or future C-UAS requirement. Instead Sky Warden utilises a networked eco-system of constantly evolving sensors and effectors, drawn from MBDA’s wide experience in air defence and effects management, to match the UAS threat.

Being modular, scaleable, and evolvable, Sky Warden is able to effectively and appropriately neutralise all classes of UAV, from small Class 1 micro-UAVs to large tactical UAVs, as well as other traditional air threats.
At its core is a command and control (C2) system that performs effects management – co-ordinating this eco-system of sensors, soft-kill effectors, and hard-kill effectors to defend armed forces units or sensitive sites across a large protection perimeter.

Sky Warden utilises operationally-proven building blocks within a modular open architecture that can be adapted to end-user requirements or to plug and play emerging and future novel sensing and effector technologies. MBDA C-UAS solutions have already been successfully demonstrated to customers.

Eric Béranger, CEO of MBDA, said: “As Europe’s leading air defence provider, MBDA is uniquely able to offer customers a proven, flexible and integrated C-UAS system. One that is available today, and can evolve into the future. Sky Warden embodies MBDA’s deep knowledge of the engagement process, systems integration, of all categories of effectors and their next evolutions, and of effects management in the air defence domain.”

| LAD & C-UAS | Scoop.it
