Complexity theories and Systems Thinking: parallels and differences

This post is for facilitators, consultants, academics, and everyone who is working with complexity theories or have just begun exploring and reading about this field.

Andrew Gerkens's insight:

This post is a useful resource for considering how we explore and seek to understand human systems. The post explores the similarities and differences between systems thinking and complexity theory.

I liked this quote referred to in the article:

“In a complex world, a vision is not a photograph of a future destination, and a strategy isn’t the map that charts the course. A complex vision is a compass that points towards a future direction, and a complex strategy is a set of safety guardrails inside which people can innovate and learn.”

Why Informal networks are set to revolutionize HR and People Analytics

To date, very little work has been done on harnessing the power of informal networks and teams in the world of both global HR and global HR systems. The fluidity and informality of teamwork has always meant that capturing ever changing team membership and dynamics has been virtually impossible at any scale.

Andrew Gerkens's insight:

How network analysis can help HR make better decisions. This related article is also really valuable, as it explores the difference between human and social capital -

How HR gets invited to the table

Become A Credible Activist
Andrew Gerkens's insight:

The importance of credibility and activism to HR effectiveness. Influence and relationships build trust, but ultimately professional effectiveness starts and ends with results.

HR professionals who want to add value to the business need to be involved in business discussions. To get invited to those discussions, HR professionals must first exhibit credible activist competency traits. They need to be credible and they need to have an opinion and be willing to voice that opinion. Credible Activists build credibility over time by delivering results, improving personal and professional performance, developing relationships of trust internally and externally, and utilizing the trust to influence others.

Start Today Smarter: Continuous and Collaborative Learning
Andrew Gerkens's insight:

How do you stay on top of your game when there is too much information and where the half life of knowledge continues to decrease? Content curation is a key skill set for us as individuals, but also for L&D in supporting organisational capability. Curation is all about helping people learn, unlearn and relearn at the speed of business. L&D can defocus on course/content creation and harness their efforts around equipping and supporting people to create, share and access knowledge on a continuous basis.

10 of the Best MOOC Providers

10 of the Best MOOC Providers | HR, L&D Capability and Role | Scoop.it
The growing number of connected devices and increasing demand for low cost, high quality education give MOOCs a bright future.
Andrew Gerkens's insight:

A simple summary and overview of top MOOC providers. I'm not a huge MOOC user myself, but I've enjoyed the MOOCs I have undertaken. Note - I said undertaken, not completed! The value I have found in MOOCs has been the access to a library of curated content I can use/save/explore etc. based on my needs. This is a huge saving of time and effort. The other benefit of the MOOC has been to connect with others who are interested in similar topics. Neither of these benefits relates to completion of the MOOC.

In being able to respond to the specific needs of individuals and teams and needing to be careful about when we invest in developing content, I can see the benefit of MOOCs as part of a broader solution we might help workers to scope out.

How HR can make continuous feedback a practical reality

How HR can make continuous feedback a practical reality | HR, L&D Capability and Role | Scoop.it
Organisations can expect continuous feedback to become the new performance management standard, and there are a number of steps HR can take in the process
Andrew Gerkens's insight:

I'm most interested in moving away from traditional performance appraisal (seen as administrative process for HR and linked to salary review), to a culture of real-time or continuous performance feedback, which I think can really drive performance and development, be seen as being 'for' the business and individual.

I'm interested in how technology can simplify and enable this approach and have been following Small Improvements (as an example).

Mirjam Neelen Let’s start with a quote: “Successful training is not a one-time event but an iterative process that considers the elements leading up to training as well as important factors after training” (Salas, Tannenbaum, Kraiger, & Smith-Jentsch, 2012, p 78). This quote is from their meta-analysis of the science of training and development in…

Is Managing Learning Enough...Or Is Broader ACCESS the End-Game?

Actually it’s NOT an either or question, but…I must add to the title right up front to provide a hint of where I’m going…ACCESS is not exclusive to learning.

Andrew Gerkens's insight:

We used to think that 'knowledge was power' (when knowledge lived in people's heads). We then moved our thinking to one of 'access to knowledge is power' (when the internet opened up access for all). Now we have so much or too much information - the key is searching, filtering and sense making - 'access to the right knowledge at the right time is power'.

How to Support Self-Directed Learning in a Learning Organization

How to Support Self-Directed Learning in a Learning Organization | HR, L&D Capability and Role | Scoop.it
L&D professionals still have a critical role to play in supporting employees who are applying self-directed learning strategies.
Andrew Gerkens's insight:

A useful reference for considering how to enable a culture of self directed learning. In practice, I see many of these elements spread across a range of processes and practices, so it is good to have a central framework and guidance to review, especially given more and more organisations are mapping and improving the employee experience.

Andrew Gerkens's insight:

A useful overview of the changing landscape and implications for L&D. I like this quote from Charles, 'The idea that helping people develop skills alone will lead to high performance is a fallacy. L&D needs to look and work beyond ‘skills’ if it is to have an impact'. The value of having a performance and outcomes focus, which will help us do the right work (solve the right problems), have real impact and which I truly believe is far more exciting and rewarding!
